View Full Version : Infiltrating New York Harbour

So, U128 has made it all the way across the Atlantic after some month or so of sailing across at sea:) I'm slowly but surely creeping into New York, but there's quite a trip to get into the harbour, and I believe they have shore batteries operating along the coast.
My question is, if i wait until night, and then creep in slowly on the surface, can that increase my chances? or can the battereis see you as well at night as if it was broad daylight?
I know, harbour raiding in Feb 1942 is risky, but, with risk comes rewards. If I can sink a US battleship at berth in the harbour, I'll be happy :)

New York harbour has a sub net across the narrow entrance which is flanked by two surface batteries.
I recommend only trying to infiltrate at night and in bad weather. Once you're in, there are a load of sitting ducks and minimal defences.

So how did it turn out???

there wwasn't a huge amount there, not in teh way of warships anyway. rather lackluster. I sank a 14500 ton troop ship, it was really teh only ship there worth sinking.
Getting in and out wasn't a problem, but it feels alot like a wasted trip. I sank two ships on the way there. Grand total was some 22,000 tons at the end of the patrol.
I dunno, I might stick to waters closer to home, and focus on sinking the British instead. lol

I disagree.. the cover of night is essential, but if you are willing to spend an hour glued to your controls, then bad weather is more of a hinderance than a help.
Simply nose in at 1 knot to the narrows, sit at periscope depth with your periscope up, but below the water line - then move in during twilight hours to get a reasonable fix on where the netting is, mark it on your map then withdraw and wait for darkness.
When darkness falls, set your depth as 8m and silent speed and simply glide across the netting. So long as you are in the middle of the narrows, you'll get through
I've down it twice and neither time been caught. (In fact, it is a favourite tactic of mine in the early war years, to sneak into closed harbours, blow stuff up then pick off the enemy as he wades through the carnage or narrow entrances, before high-tailing it outta there) The only down side is you must watch your hydrophones for nearby shipping you may hit at such depths

Yeah, everything you described above was what I did thats why it was so easy getting in and out :)
Looks like my decision to stick to closer waters has backfired. I've been patrolling around Gibralter for a week and a half (game time) and I haven't seen or heard a single ship, plane or convoy.
The Milk Cow U461 has taken up station in the North West Atlantic. I'm heading out from the Moroccan coast towards her now to resupply my fuel, and then head on back to the US coast to see if I can actually find enemy shipping. The area directly outside Gibralter has always been a fav hunting ground of mine, but this time, i'm just not finding anything. :(
Back to the US coast it is. No harbour raids this time. Too much hassle. :know:

Ah, but you should enjoy the satisfaction of knowing for decades to come the ongoing speculation on the subject of Nazi Uboats getting close to US shores is because of your incursion. hehehe :hmm:

The whole point of the second Happy Time is that you don't need fancy harbor raids or any such tactics to get big tonnage. I'm going there shortly. I was just off the Gibraltar entrance after spending time down in Freetown. I needed a final ship to put me over 100K for the first time and had to wait DAYS for something to pass through Gibraltar. Then, in the space of two days, I had six ships and three convoys pass through it! So patience, patience, patience.
That said, it's December 1941, probably Jan-Feb '42 when I get back in the water, so I'm heading for the East Coast! Oh, and IIRC, you shouldn't really expect ANY big US warships on the East Coast during that time period.

I was thinking of starting a 2nd career and raiding New York with a Type IX. Obviously the southern entrance to the harbour is teeming with patrols and defenses.:nope:
My so my question is could I sail up to Long Island Sound into the East River and infiltrate the harbor?:arrgh!:
Thx!

In SH4 I snuck into a japanese harbor and gave the japs a suprise, their own pearl harbor on Dec.11, 1941. I sunk every ship in the harbor. HA HA HA HA:rotfl:

In real life if i was american i would have some nets prepared for close the gap in case of harbour explosions, or mines .
Too dangerous for harbour raids , in my drumbeat operations i expend my time dived waiting the incoming ships in 150-200 meters waters.

If you're after tonnage then check out the back of Halifax - Tessa found this gem a month or so ago: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=135838&highlight=tessa
