Hi @ll,

I am pretty new to SHIII (still playing the plain vanilla 1.4b). So far, I am torturing myself with the naval academy. Got to the convoy attack exercise. On my latest run something really weird happened. Closed in on the convoy, got the C2 Cargo, a Merchant and the Tanker and then went down to safety. Survived a lengthy hide&seek with the escorts, and then tried to disengage in silent mode. From the hydrophone records there was a warship near sailing in tight circles...but i got neither pinged nor depthcharged. Good news actually, but I found it strange, so I went to the free view to have a peek at the surface. The destroyer surely was there, sailing in tight circles with its aft superstructure on fire. I found it strange, but stranger things were to follow.

Even when i cancelled silent running and went to ahead flank the destroyer was still there doing the merry-go-round. Not a single ASDIC ping or depthcharge dropped. I was running at some 70 meters deep and making a lot of noise, still no reaction from above. I opted for disengaging to safety.

Now, any explanation what has happened to that poor destroyer? It couldn't be me, I never fired a single eel on him and up until shortly before that moment he was doing the utmost to find and bomb my sub into oblivion (nearly got me at 120 meters deep). Game bug? Some random event? Misfired depthcharge?

Afaik it's a bug. The destroyer and the trawler start shooting at each other for no reason till only one's left.

Friendly fire confirmed. Run the mission once again..now getting even cockier and promptly got paid back with a series of charges coming way tooo close to like it. Then at once it ceased altough I got pinged every now and then. Surfaced and withessed the destroyer sitting immobilized and with its bridge and stern on fire getting pounded by the trawler. Sent him a coup de grace from the stern tube and proceeded with dismantling the convoy. The trawler never bothered me altough circling alarmingly close.

Now it will be interesting to know what causes that bug.

Very old story, from the game's release three years ago. They made it so if you sink a neutral or friendly ship, the neutral or even your own side becomes your enemy for 24 hours.

Unfortunately it works so that if a surface ship accidentally hits one of his own, HE becomes their enemy and they do their best to kill each other. Unfixable so far. Consider it a very advanced form of road (convoy?) rage.:dead:
