View Full Version : Musical Tour of the World Thread
Here, at Subsim, we have an extraordinary international group of people; a grand combination of minds, ideas and points of view. Let's take music, which is a language everyone can understand and tour the world.
To kick off this thread, here are a couple of songs I like:
Malaika, probably Africa's most popular song.

Interesting results; 1.- interesting to see what everyone likes
2.- the links also encourage detours and one is exposed to stuff one would have never seen or listened on one's own.

National Anthem of my own country, Sweden.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJqb6nkOMZ4
And here is the text of the two first verses, the ones we usually sing:
Du gamla, Du fria, Du fjällhöga nord
Du tysta, Du glädjerika sköna!
Jag hälsar Dig, vänaste land uppå jord,
Din sol, Din himmel, Dina ängder gröna.
Du tronar på minnen från fornstora dar,
då ärat Ditt namn flög över jorden.
Jag vet att Du är och Du blir vad du var.
Ja, jag vill leva jag vill dö i Norden.
Lost in translation maybe?

Stragely enough I was over in Beirut as EM for the Pepsi Live show when this Lady (unless I'm hopelesly mixed up) had the crew over for dinner at her exquisite apartment, it was an amazing evening and she was an utterly charming hostess making sure I was entertained throughout despite my awful arabic and fairly lamenatable french.

I'm a big, big fan of Mongolian music.
here's a sample of mongolian throat singing - there are no musical instruments involved, everything you hear is the one singer

You'll need a proper teacher according to a programme on Radio 4 you can give yourself a brain haemorage by badly done throat singing!
Fantastic sound though.

I remember playing in the Helsinki Hall of Culture with an Irish orchestra, we had a Finnish choir backing us. We played Finlandia, they sang. The audience were deathly quiet, I can still remember the chill. A beautiful song.
