How do I calculate the AOB of a target in stock SH3?

1) you look at it - here's a trainer i wrote http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=134201&highlight=tutorial
2) you use the U-jagd tools mod 1.3 for stock SH3 from the link in my sig
3) you plot the target course and then you use the protractor tool to show the aob which is the angle between the target course and you along the reciprocal line of sight bearing.
4) you don't do this - instead you plot the target course, set a perpendicular intercept course for you. Set your scope straight ahead, go to the TDC station and set the AOB to show 90 port or starboard, whichever is true for the target when it passes in front of you. Turn on the TDC again, and your TDC is now programmed for action. Your AOB is correct so long as neither you nor the target change course

Thank you for the response. Could you please elaborate on Number 3?

So you have plotted the target course, you then draw a line from the target's current position to you.
Using the protractor you measure the angle between the target's course and the line to you.
This is the current AOB -
this method is the least reliable in my opinion. you should do method 4 if you don't like the methods 1 and 2.

Thank you. Why do you think it is unreliable? It seems like a pretty good method to me.

Because this kind of AOB reading, as opposed to method 4, degrades rapidly over time, especially at shortish ranges or high speeds. If you spend 1 minute drawing the necessary lines and getting the AOB, it may not be the AOB anymore.
One of the best things you can do as a subsimmer (if you don't want to use U-jagd tools or the OLC gui which provides this in-game) is to build yourself a whiz wheel that provides instant AOB-target course solutions as well as other useful stuff.

Thanks for the reply. I might try out the U-jagd mod. On another note, do you know why they put the zero on the bottom like with the tool helper and stuff?

Because it's better that way. If you start the line on the map, and drag it out, where the line crosses the tool helper shows the actual bearing of the line. this is only possible if the tool is upside down

I downloaded Ujagd. It's nice.
