Said it before, will say it again. Criminals do not obey gun control laws so there's no point in having them.

Tell that to the victims of the high-school shootings...

I think the problem with gun laws is that if every guy can have a gun they will surely be put to use more often than in countries with stricter laws. For example imagine there is a bar fight, just the ordinary "Did you just stare at my girl???” stuff with a bit of alcohol. In Germany with its strict laws the guys would now start to beat the sh*t out of each other.
But now imagine this happens in the states and one has a gun.... you can guess how this would turn out...with someone kicking the bucket.
The guy probably did not intend to kill someone when he took the gun with him and he's probably a law abiding citizen normally. But after some alcohol and the "right" circumstances things get out of control sometimes.

With stricter laws this would have ended with a broken jaw, a bleeding nose, some broken pride and a report to the police.

I think that's what the stricter laws are about. Everybody knows that someone who intends to commit a crime won't give a damn for the laws. But maybe they can prevent people from becoming killers (sometimes even just by accident).

To be honest, I don't have any idea how many people get killed with guns in the states. But hear saying tells that quite a lot of people die every year in shootings with legally owned guns.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, hear saying isn't known to be that reliable after all.;)

Does not compute.

Criminals don't obey any laws!
That does not mean there is no point in having them.

Criminals don't obey any laws, should we get rid of all of them? ;) That is quite impractical, as a weapon and as a flashlight, but it is an interesting example of engineering.

Edit: You beat me to it Letum!

YES YES YES!!!

We need to get rid of all the criminals. DING we have a winner.

Punish those who commit crimes, do not punish those who don't commit crimes.

Don't restrict person "A"'s rights because person "Q" might commit a crime.

Don't infringe on the large majority of law abiding gun owners because a very small number of criminals.
