View Full Version : Cover up those naked Egyptian mummies
Fury as museum bosses cover up naked Egyptian mummies to protect 'sensitivities' of visitors
They have been on display for more than 120 years and have bewitched and enchanted those that have seen them.
But now Egyptian mummies dating from 700BC have been ordered to cover up - because they are not wearing clothes.

Cover up your shame, people are fainting. :88)
Well, I can see the point to an extent.
I might be pissed off if my naked body was in a museum being gorped at by tourists.
The respect and dignity of the dead should be observed, but I think that the
Manchester museum treats them with enough reverence without having to cover their
gentiles up. I think the public can be trusted not to giggle or make disrespectful
comments at nude corpses....right?

But what if Political Correctness brings about World War 3?
Anyway, I don't think they should cover it up (Atleast not completely), after all, it's an important piece of history

Hey, I'd be proud if that's what people looking at my private parts called them 3000 years later :rotfl:

Do we have to cover also Michelangelo's chef d'oeuvres ?
Or cover up the "gentiles" of the characters appearing in the sixtine chappel ?
Where does it end ? Do we have to cover every ancient greek statue ?
I mean as time goes by people are just losing touch with reality, maybe because they see too much reality tv :rotfl: but its just a sad state of affairs.

I think it is more about protecting the mummy's dignity.
Respecting the dead etc.
Not that i agree with it. (see post above).

Com'on we are talking about an historical artifact.
Its what 2000 years old ? What dignity are you talking about, I just don't understand.
If we had wanted to respect the dead, europeans should never have scavenged and brough back trophees (mummies, etc...) from their ex colonies.
Com'on we are talking about an historical artifact.
Well, yes, but we are also taking about the remains of a person.
The last crew of U-69 are now historical artifacts, but if they where found in a
mummified conditions they would either be left in their sub or given a burial.
It is unlikely that they would be stripped of the clothes they died in and be put in a
museum nude like the mummies have been.
The mummies are treated differently because they are of greater historical interest,
but that does not mean there is no balance to be struck.
that said, I still think they maintain their dignity in nude display.

It's two things..........
Political Correctness
Possible legal actionIt's just shows how plain silly this country has become.
Just to play devil's advocate:
Would you be concerned if your dead body or the dead body of one of your close
relatives (say for example your mother) was put on public public display in the nude
because it was consider historicaly intresting SUBMAN?

Don't really see that a 3 thousand year old mummy could be erotic to anyone, maybe interesting scientifically but come on, no ones going to get a chubby looking at that

I really don't think it is about that.

I don't think I'd really give a damn since I've been dead over 3,000 years and dead is dead... I really wouldn't care. Gawk away. It's kind of strange that you'd even look at a mummy's private quarters.

We had an interesting case here in SA over Sara Baartman. She was from the Hottentot tribe and was paraded around Europe 200 years ago because of her large buttocks and labia. When she died the French bottled and preserved these parts of her anatomy and put them on public display in one of their museums.
Given that, I think the mummy got off lightly.
"The remains of an African woman who was paraded around Europe as a freak and scientific curiosity have been handed back to the South African Government in a symbolic gesture of reconciliation by France. The skeleton and bottled organs of Saarti Baartman - who was known as the "Hottentot Venus" for her pronounced buttocks and genitals - were handed over to the South African ambassador in a ceremony in Paris on Friday, ending a long battle for her return."

Sorry, mate, these are people. No repect for the dead? You would probably not feel that way if it was your family member. Then again, I do not know how twisted your mind might be.

No...you do not agree with me.
Read my replies more carefully. ;)
I do not want them covered up. I think there is a very fine balance to be made and
arguments for covering them should not just be dismissed. Any corpse should be
treated with respect, but I think we can achieve that respect with out covering them up.
The ideal situation for me would be some kind of briefing to emphasise the need to respect
the corpse like medical students get before a human dissection.
I don't know what the museam has in place already.
It is a sad fact that the remains of these people have been treated as a freak show in the past.

I'm agreeing with you that these are people. Covering up at least the pelvic area are my own thoughts. This was my thought to achieve the level of repect without covering completely. :know: Covering them up entirely defeats the purpose of study of mumification.

Not to mention the purpose of a museum display, I mean, you might as well put a block of aluminum there and say that it's a mummy...
I think I agree with covering them up partially...

You can liken it to a open casket viewing or closed casket viewing. Treat this like a open casket viewing without the tux or dress, but at least get a cover over the pelvis area for those that might be offended.

Here is the thing guys, just like TV, radio, internet. If you think you will be offended, change the channel, change the radio station, do not visit the website. If a the mummy is offending, go look a the gemstone exhibit. Simple as that.

I'm not conviced that anyone has been offended by the mummy in that way.
I think thats just the DM's spin on it.
I suspect it is only the lack of respect offending some people, not the shriveled nob.

I'm not convinced either. I'm venturing a guess just the sight of the mummy was enough to create the passing out. Lets face it, the shriveled member probably looks more like beef jerkie than anything. :rotfl:

If David was a preserved corpse put there against his will your analogy might have some relevance.

Letum are you South African? "Biltong"!!! That is sacred here. We build shrines in its honour - you are not a regte South African if you do not chew on biltong and suck on a laced naartjie while watching the Springboks donner the Lions, the French, the Wallabies, or whoever tries to pick up the ball and run with it:D

That was a joke lighten up Francis, I am no more twisted than the others making jokes here. Frankly I never saw the attraction in putting mummies on display in the first place, I understand studying for scientific reasons but whatever.
