View Full Version : Huckabee jokes about Obama ducking a gunman

This has got to be the most stupid, distasteful, irresponsible comment I have ever read. Is this moron oblivious of America's history of assasinations. Here you have the first serious black presidential contender and you come out with a remark like that. Yes, Mr Moron, float out the idea to all the gun packing crazies out there. What is equally sad is the enjoining laughter from the audience. If Bush, McCain and other Republican leaders do not come out and strongly repudiate him for this ill conceived attempt at humor, then one can only sadly reflect on how far down the road the Republican Party has travelled in trashing its own standards of sanity and pride.

I'm inclined to give Mr Huckabee the benefit of the doubt here, he comes across as someone who can't stop joking.
However, this comment was so mind-numbingly stupid that anyone would have kept their mouth shut.
Moron, maybe. But I don;t see too much malice behind it. I don't expect the Obama campaign to make hay over it.

I agree that Huckabee did not intend this to be offensive. He just does not seem to be that type of guy.
Given that, however, I feel that this type of joking is in very bad taste.
I think that a sincere apology from Huckabee is in order and then the matter should be closed.
It was a poor joke. Nothing more, nothing less

Did any of you even bother to read the whole article.
I think not. Post whores are my new name for posting half truths and halfassed posts.

A real intelligent post Firewall. Just what is it you are trying to say? That Huckabee didn't say what he said?! Then what has he apologized for?

Oh great - Obama turns out to be another whacko:
...Obama supports extending the assault weapons ban, limits on gun sales, and a national law against carrying concealed weapons, with exceptions for retired police and military personnel....

After the campus shootings that have shocked and saddened not only the US, but the rest of the world, to in any way argue that the gun laws in the US do not need to be reviewed is, in my opinion, a reckless position for any candidate to take who wants to hold public office. One of the tasks entrusted to the highest office in the land is to protect its citizenry from harm, both within and without.

Try and find one story of a CCP holder that did harm to another. Short answer is, you can't. What you will find stories about how CCP holders helped stop numerous crimes. Starting to see the picture? What if I told you that the numbers of crimes stopped by pistol holders (non law enforcement) in the US was in the millions?

CCP I must concede with you Subsim is a bad idea. It has no basis in fact. Here in SA we have far more stringent laws regarding gun ownership, but CCP is not one of them. All I'm saying, is that the laws regarding gun ownership in the US need to be relooked at. To be able to buy a gun through the post is, well, crazy. Is it not?

How that works is that an FFL (Federal Firearms License Dealer) needs to be in the middle of that, and the FFL will do a background check on the purchaser. If this were not the case, than yeah, I'd have to agree with you. Two ways that a criminal could get around this however is buying at a gun show from a private party, or buying from a private party directly.
However, I doubt any criminal deals with trying to buy a gun directly. I'm sure some are too stupid and would try anyway, but still... Most of them deal with smuggled guns, or stolen guns. Either way, any tougher law means that only law abiding civilians would be punished, and for what?
I dunno. I give up. :-?

PS. I can tell you for what - so that some mommy somewhere 'feels good' without realizing that things just got a whole lot unsafer for her.

Subman1, the last campus shooting, did that guy not buy his guns through the post? I don't know, I'm just asking. You say the FFl will do a check. How stringent is that check? Here in SA, if you even know what a shrinks couch feels like - no gun for you jose!

Here in SA, if you even know what a shrinks couch feels like - no gun for you jose!I think that was a mess up since someone failed to do an appropriate check. That guy had already been declared a mental case, but that data never turned up when he went to buy his guns. I forgot the exact details.
SA sounds similar to the US in that regard. If a shrink says you're a nut case, then no guns for you. That was a big protest lately and a new law has been passed since it used to be you lost your rights to guns forever. Now there is a recourse that one could go through to prove they are better to get the right restored.

I did not like "Huck" earlier in the political season, & this incident does nothing to improve my opinion of him. It's unfortunate we need to state the obvious truth that there is nothing funny about political assassination, regardless of whether or not you agree with someone's policies.
Not sure how we can jump from this incident to generalizing about the Republican party as a whole - after all, if you're concerned about tasteless jokes I suppose we can find instances where pundits on BOTH the left & right have stepped over the line. Wouldn't you agree?

There are 1000s of gun laws on the books in this country. The fact of the matter is criminals do not pay attention to gun laws. So all of you who suggest a re-look at gun laws need to STFU. They do not work, especially in a country that is as heavily armed as this one.

You are right on the money. And to add to that, it seems like they don't enforce the ones now, they just make new ones so they can feel good.

Yes, you are 100% right, fault can be found on both sides of the aisle. If truth be told, what motivated my comment re the Republican party was not only my anger at Huckabee's crass attemp at humor but also Bush's comments in the Knesset on 'appeasement'.

Now he's dragging his big-mouthed self around on the TV news circuit, trying to apologize. Tough. There was some talk about him being the VP nominee for McCain - a long shot just got a little longer, if you ask me.
