View Full Version : give myself permission to cheat

Tagging a convoy. A small harbour defence type boat and an aux merchant as escorts. The auxilliary type are a pain. If I hit them shallow they take no damage (as I've posted before). I finally had this sucker dead to rights, stationary (listening for me) about 900yds away and me with 6 Mk18's. In the manual he has a draught of 22ft, so the fish were set for varying depths of from 10ft to 20ft and a mix of contact and magnetic. Wanted to see what worked, if anything. All 6 were good, all 6 passed under the keel. If he was riding that tender he should roll over if he tries to turn.:nope: This sucks. I have no qualms about cheating if the game is going to have unsinkable escorts. I exited and will try the convoy again. :damn:

OK, went through it again. This time managed to damage the auxilliary and sink the subchaser... only thing is just as the last torpedo hit on the last merchant, after 6 hours gameplay with no chance to stop and save because the escorts wouldn't leave me alone, it crashed to desktop. I think I need a break from this game before I throw it at the wall.

Hmmm. Got a package in the mail today, a new video card. Installed it and just HAD to run SH4 to see the improvement. OMG! OK, apart from the major eye candy boost, something else weird happened. Ran through the convoy attack again. Got into position to attack the merchants from their unprotected side (escorts behind and to port, me on their stbd side). They're 4,000yds away and they turn to pass behind me, which would be fine except now it places the track of the damnable auxilliary merchant right over me. I start to move away but he gets too close so I stop engines. As luck would have it he decides to stop and listen as well. We're both stationary about 2500yds apart. I decide to see what'll happen if I can peg him with a Mk18. If you've seen my previous comments on this beasty on another thread I and several others have hit them repeatedly and failed to leave a dent, or else have sunk them and got no renown or sunk message. Anyway, I just wanted to slow him down, which I know IS possible.
Fired a single Mk18 and waited. It hit him right at the stern. I went to external camera (still love the visuals) and checked for damage and found his screw blown off. At least he wouldn't be able to chase me now. Revert back to periscope view to see him decidedly down at the stern. WTF? He's sinking from 1 hit when they've survived 6 before? Sure enough, he goes nose up and sinks by the stern AND I get the sunk ship message. Makes no sense to me, but on the face of it it looks like the video card has made them sinkable...??
In any case, now I can sink them, I've had to revoke my cheating permissions...
