Just needed to know (as I am new to the game)

How do you engage a target when you are submerged??? When I lined up as best as I thought I was facing a target and opened the tube door and tried to fire, it comes back and tells me that there is not a solution for the torpedo and it wont fire it off. What am I missing? I was told you can fire from 25meters below the surface and up..............Also, whatever advice anyone can give on engaging targets successfully in auto shoot mode would be appreciated. I will eventually graduate to manual aiming, but I have to learn this in-depth but AWESOME sim game.

Why are you trying to shoot targets without the help of your periscope? Generally, that's a very tricky way of doing things as you have to be able to manually calculate the firing solution using just your passive sonar (hydrophones). It's much easier to use your periscope to gather the required data. If you are worried about being detected or caught, being an extra 10M underwater at the time of firing probably won't be a significant help.

From the practical point of view the only way I use such techniques is only when I'm in deep fog and I cannot see more than 150-200m. Ideally if you set the running speed of the torpedo to fast and you're a bit lucky you can hit ships that up to 900-1000m away. More than that is almost impossible (to me at least  )

I have found Mittlewaechter brilliant tutorial extermely helpful in conducting submerged attacks. His method works so well I rarely need to use the periscope. He has a great little training video that shows exactly what to do.

Here's the links from a pervious but related discussing here at subsim.

Here is the link Mittlewaechter included that points to his dicussion on the Ubi boards.

Welcome aboard Kaleuns http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9708/piratebf4.gif (http://imageshack.us)

Manual targetting is a skill you will gain only after many frustrating attempts.

In the meantime I would suggest you use the advantage of the external cam to assist you.

Welcome aboard:up:

On to targeting whilst submergerd, the only way is through the use of you attack scope (or sonar, if your U-boat is equiped with it. don't worry about that yet.), and by plotting your targets course/intercept course on the map.

As mentioned before, you can find various links to how to do this by searcing the forums.

And if you don't get it first time, just keep at it and you will be rewarded with a successful kill(s).

I just watched the manual targetting of Mitttlewaechter, he hit a target from over 1500 meters away, without raising the scope!
That man is a genius

The best part is that his method can be duplicated, I have had great success using it. If anything it has provided me with a really solid target course, range and speed data needed for manual targeting. Really helpful for the low visibility situations or if you want to keep a very low profile. It really rewarding when you hit the target without ever using scope.

The only problem I have experienced is sometimes my hydrophone operator losses the contact within 1500 meters. I can't image how because when I check the phones I can hear the contact loud and clear. I don't understand how the operator cannot heard it considering he tracked the target from long to medium ranges.
