I just got a new Dell XPS System. I loaded my Silent Steel Game and everything works but the video. Sound is great, it allows me to pick my interactive pharses but no video.

The system has the newest Microsoft Vista, 500GB HD and 4G of memory. Can anyone help with this issue???

Thanks,
Keith

Ok i assume Silent steel is a old game. you will find that vista has alot of compatability issues with older software. Too be honist i havnt heard one person say anything good about vista so i recon this is your problem. Unless you computer is too good for the game?

Im not sure why you would buy such a good pc to play a game like that anyway ;)

Oh and welcome to the forums :up: :up:

Thanks for the reply.

I have had this game for about 6 years. Just got the new PC for the kids/house and for business needs.

As I said, the sound works great while the game plays, it gives me the ability to choose my next move but no video? I see an error that reads...'Vids:lv32" decompressor...Not sure what this message involves or details.

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Subsim, Keith, and nice one for having Silent Steel.

I've managed to play it on Vista no problem, using the 4 CD version (wouldnt mind having the DVD though)

Would you mind posting the exact error message? Also, could you post what's in your TSAGEWIN.ini? (found in C:/ISTEEL) Thanks :D

When I install the disc (There is a set of 4, but disk 1 in the installation disk), the error comes up with the following....

A 'Waveaudio' MCI device driver was not found installed in your system. Please get one from your sound card manufacturer or properly re-install your sound card software. (The game will work without one, you just won't get player speech)

When it loads, it loads as.... C:\ISTEEL\

When the game starts, the screen comes up black with a 5"x5" box that reads......
Video not available; cannot find 'vids:IV32'

So, what do you think??

Thanks for any help.:damn:

Hi

I don't know if you're still having problems, but the way I've always managed to get around video (codec) problems is by installing KLite (FULL)

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm

I never got Silent Steel to work for me because the disk's I bought off ebay were faked bad copies that couldn't be read.

But anytime I've wanted to watch a movie, or video, or had problems playing back sound.. the above codecs have always fixed it.

Hope this helps.

Ok

Good news. I've got it working properly under Vista! Yay me! lol

Anyhow, here's what I did.

I've got the 4CD version, and I installed it (it creates a folder and some files at C:\ISTEEL

Go into that folder and edit the TSAGEWIN.CFG file

My experience was that not only did the video not work (gave an error with vids:lv32) but also the Player Voice wasn't working.

Here's the fix...

Edit the TSAGEWIN.CFG with Notepad and set the follow (NOTE THAT G: IS THE ID OF MY CD ROM DRIVE - THIS WILL PROB BE DIFF. FOR YOU)

DM = 0
PATH = C:\ISTEEL\
CD = G:\
AVI = G:\AVI
TRACKING_SPEECH = ON
PLAY_MIDI = ON
ROLLING_SAVE = PANIC
SCALING = OFF
SUBTITLES = OFF
HASDIGI = TRUE
PLAYER_SPEECH = ON
VOLVIDEO = 1000
VIDEXT = AVI
AVITYPE = AVIVideo
FAMILY = FALSE

OK, with that done, close Notepad and save the file.

Now, that's fixed the Players Voice.

The video was even easier.

First I tried my own advice and downloaded and install KLite Codec 4.1.1 FULL and did the (LOTS OF STUFF) install.

Tried Silent Steel and it still didn't work. Video wouldn't play in Media Center, the old Window media window (from Klite) and others.

HOWEVER, the video would play in Apple Quicktime! So the next step was actually poking around on the CD1 root where a little help file mentions this...

You may, when attempting to start your session, see an error message
stating: "Video not available, cannot find 'vids:IV32' decompressor."
This message means that the Video for Windows (INDEO 3.2) video driver
was not found. To install the driver, run SETUP from the VFW11E directory
on the Tsunami product CD."

Lo and behold, in the root of CD 1 there is a folder called VFW11E, just run the setup program in there and it will install some Windows 3.1.1 codecs.

DON'T REBOOT.

Then go back to the C:\ISTEEL folder and right click the STEEL.EXE and change the compatibility settings to Windows 95, Disable Visual Themes, Disable Desktop composition, Disable display scaling on high DPI settings.

Click Apply

Click on

Double click STEEL.EXE

And it works!!!

Have fun and I hope this is useful

Wrong dude. Any game can work if you set it up right in Vista.

Vista has issue but can be work around.:yep:

Best option is here and learn how to take control over Vista and XP,

http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html

Any game can work... Its all about you and what you do to make it work.;)

Also have the latest updates and SP1 installed.

Down load Indeo Legacy codec pack www.moviecodec.com/downloads/ (http://www.moviecodec.com/downloads/)
You must have Media Player Classic Home Cinema installed or it's available free at various sites. May cause some issues with vista so be sure to create a restore point before installing the codec pack . This will work and you can play Silent Steel, Thank God, However, The codec seemed to cause a issue with my Bluetooth. Good Luck !:damn:
