I have little question about the downloadable version of SHIII available at Direct2Drive: The page for the game states that 'laptops are not supported'.
Does this mean it won't run my (fairly advanced) Dell Inspiron? Or is no tech support available?
Will it run? Is all I want to know.

It all depends on the amount of RAM, graphics card dedicated or not, and the CPU.
List the specs of your laptop.
I primarily play SHIII on my laptop, aside from some CTD bugs I've never had problems with getting it running. As aforementioned, key is to make sure the hardware onboard can handle it. Best if it has its own graphics card and at least 2 gb of ram to run smoothly. Aside from the game requirements themselves there's no built in limitations that prevent you from playing it on a capable laptop.

I don't remember the specs off the top of my head, but my harddrive is fairly large, and the graphics card runs games like Rome Total War, Medieval TW, Fleet Command, Shogun Total War and Destroyer Command fairly well, but I do turn down the options on the graphics just to be on the safe side. I do have some memory issues with RTW, but nothing serious. I can't run the more advanced games like Medieval2TW, Silent Hunter 4 and any of the graphics heavy FPS', but I didn't have built for gaming ;) so this isn't surprising.

Here's a comparison that might be useful. My computer is fairly outdated so it may be close to your laptop.
Call of Duty 2: Runs fine on my machine. I don't have the highest settings, but enough for it to look good. I get some slowdown when there is extreme action.
Far Cry: No problems with fairly high settings.
Battlestations: Midway: Had no problems at all at high settings.
SHIII (stock): No gameplay problems in normal conditions. Some lag in ports.
SHIII (GWX2.0 mod): No gameplay problems in normal conditons. Bad lag in ports unless I use the Lite Harbor Traffic mod. Some lag during aircraft strafing attacks.
Conclusion: If your laptop would have problems with any of the first three games then SHIII might be a bit of a stretch.
So I take it your Inspiron actually runs. Mine would randomly, and instantly, power off. Of course this behaviour started after the warranty expired.:x

I got my laptop '06, and as a general rule it plays games older than itself fairly easy.
I don't know, I'm leaning towards not getting SHIII......

I would advise you to get the game. I play it on my laptop without any problems, except slow frame rate in harbor (but with the harbor mod, I enjoy looking at the ships) and with large explosions, especially with oil fires. i keep the graphics turned up and enjoy the pictures.
I have a three year old laptop with AMD400o+ chip and 250 of shared RAM on my video card, but I have 2Gb of RAM.
Play the game; you won't regret it.
