View Full Version : Finally my first carrier!

After playing this game for over 2 years I had never seen a capital ship or aircraft carrier before. Last night in U-9 on my first patrol on April '40 that all changed.

As the German navy sailed in support of the invasion of Norway, little type II/B U-9 sailed in a fierce storm off the northwestern tip of Scandinavia. As she went deep to avoid the endless tossing, she picked up some contacts heading straight for her. U-9 surfaced and ran flank speed in the cold dark to intercept. As we closed to within 4000m I found out that the HMS Implaceable, an Illustrious class carrier, was leading a task force SW. Waiting and watching until the right moment I unleashed 3 eels at her. It only took two to send the big boat to the bottom very quickly in the storm.

My only regret is that it was too dark to really get a good shot off the sinking (OLCE2 mod really makes the night realistic! ). Oh well it was nice to finally bag a big ship. :arrgh!:

Congrats herr Kaleun!
I am envious of your success!

Thanks very much. After no luck ever seeing a big ship in my several previous careers I decided to head up to Norway for the invasion to see what I could find.

As true to SH3's great medal awarding system, I was denied even a simple uboat badge upon my return to port. My watch officer got the IC 1st Class though :o

Yes, that sucks. You would expect a tiny bit of appreciation from BdU...makes you wonder what we toil and labor for... :nope:

I've only once seen a capital ship in any of my careers. It was a large battleship (forgot which one) but I wasn't in a good position and never managed to get within firing range of it. And of course I couldn't catch up with it.

Ah well, better luck next time. I have been warned in my current career that a task force is nearby. Better try and get into position!

Congratz, Herr Gord. Now, BDU expects great deed from you. :yep:

Nice job there herr Gord, that's one amazing claim which nobody can take away from you, no matter how lowly BdU thinks of it!
After all, how many people can say they sunk an aircraft-carrier in their career? You have your fellow kaleuns respect for that.

thanks all. it was very suprising how fast she went down with just two hits. i imagine the storm had something to do with that.

Yes sir, heavy weather really decreases the sinking time, especially with an impact-hit.

U-9 was just lost on its third patrol. It struck a mine of the coast of Britain. All hands lost.

Good one Gord!:yep: I remember my first, since capital ships are a little rare, when mine came into sight there was an all out effort to make sure my settings were correct, running silent & just sticking my scope up above the water line every now and then to get a bearing, then Los & very promptly set the depth to 100, down scope, set evasive course, & wait!!;)

I finally know how you all feel! I just got the Rodney off Narvik in U-52 on my third patrol!

I put four into her side as the task force went over me. That stopped her dead at 2230 hours local. For the next 7 and a half hours I was bombarded with DCs from the estimated 12 DDs escort. I finally managed to shake them loose long enough to get about a 4,500metre distance to the Nelson, then I was left alone. Presumably the escorts thought I was running having been rather badly battered and suffering flooding on several occasions.

After that, it was a simple case of point and shoot as the Nelson was listing badly, stern heavy and dead in the water.

Nelson finally slipped below the waves at 0617 hours.

Between that and four VW class destroyers - this has been a rather profitable experience!

You couldn't have aj, I command U-52, and if like me, I would guess that your middle aged, Hee Hee!!

Well, you must have been my exec.. Oblt.z.S Jurgen Wolff was transferred to a training flotilla and promoted upon return from his 5th patrol, leaving U-52 in your utterly capable hands ;)

Stupid me forgot to turn off the realistic career length in SH3 commander :damn:

If by middle-aged, you mean thirty with a less-than-washboard-stomach, then yes...I'm middle aged

Well done Kaleun....sadly your career didn't last that long, but at least you savoured the experience http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9708/piratebf4.gif (http://imageshack.us)

Oh, and BTW.....don't take any notice of these old farts

Congratualations, really a huge task for such small U-Boat...

i pretty much learned to just stay away from the east coast now. I think they increased the mines there in 2.1. Hehe.

I guess I am lucky.

I stumble onto a carrier, Illustrious, on my first career. Actually, she stumbled onto my type VIIB. I was in the middle of the Atlantic minding my own business when suddenly a entire tash force head straight at me. A battleship of higher tonnage is present as well. (Barham, but I am not sure) But the carrier offers a much better firing angle. Four shot, two hit and she listed and sunk by her port side. Unfortunately, my realism setting doesn't include external camera. (I really would like that video in my collection, anyone know how?). Anyway, it took me a whole day to shake those angry destroyers.

At the time I didn't realize how lucky I am. I never saw a fleet career again in my later careers. Did got a Bogue in a different career though.

I'm a bit of a noob, really, but I've never even seen or sunk an enemy warship bigger than a DD in a GWX campaign. Ever.

As a realism freak, I refuse to use psychic knowledge and be somewhere for an event I wouldn't have known of.

But that's why I've just D/Led an installed the messages mod.....my time will come

My biggest ship was an auxillary cruiser, which, IMO, looks really lame (the boat that is). I have sunk two Fiji's though, and I did get a parting long-distance, bad angle shot at a Battleship once. No joy though. My biggest disappointment was sneaking into Scapa Flow and not getting a BB, but at least I got the cruiser and auxillary cruiser. I just got the 2nd Fiji in the middle of a convoy. I had to accelerate to 7 kts and dodge a depth charging from a corvette to do it. Then my first two shots weren't reset from an attack on a tanker! Fortunately, my next two smacked home and down she went. Big warships being sunk = good times!
