View Full Version : Deaf Sonar Operator?

I experienced this last night: There was a heavy storm and rough seas so I was doing a dive to 100 feet, stopping and listening for any traffic on the hydrophone about every hour in my patrol area. This practice went on for about 6 hours of game time before I decided to jump in and have a listen for myself. What I found was that there was a large merchant vessel of some sort (never could get the hang of identifying prop sounds) on a 90* bearing and relatively close, the contact light turned on on the hydrophone station and the notepad lit up with the "unknown". When I pulled away from the sonar station though to start plotting an approach, I found that my sonar operated was reporting that there was no sound contact. I went back to the station just to be check, and sure enough, at 90* there was a loud and clear prop noise. So on a guess I made a guess that it really was a merchant and set that in the notepad and only then did my sonar guy start reporting the contact. As it turns out we were only about 3000y away from the ship, so we were well within the 10mi radius of the phones. Is this a common problem that I'll have to live with, or is there something specific about this incident that I'm either doing wrong, or is correctable. I would hate to have to run my patrols from the sonar station just so I don't miss anything. Also, I know rough seas can cause diminished phone sensitivity, but the contact was coming in very loud and very clear and the system was able to identify that it was at least there without any difficulty, so I really think it's got something to do with the sonar operator. Anyway, I'm running with TMO, RSRD, and PE 3_2 installed. Thanks, Greg
Man,how the Hell did a deaf man get through the Navy screening process?:rotfl:
Seriously though I cant help you there I just have the bug where my sub has SD radar equipped, but it wont work visually(Meaning the Radar Operator will still call out contacts)

LoL... It must be spinning so fast that you can't see the movement (some modern weather radars do spin pretty fast), but at least it works! How about this one, 5 out of 6 of my torps will run either super deep (40ft-50ft) or be jumping through the waves like a dolphin. The deep ones always miss, but I've had a torp hit the bridge of a freighter from jumping out of the wave just before impact. Is there any way to make them at least run a little more in line with the depth I've set for them? Also, in rough waters at the surface, my boat will actually ride up on a wave at the bow and stern so that there is a good 3-5 feet of air under the keel, I'm using PE3 with the wave caustics and listing option enabled... if i take that away, will my boat start acting like a 1000t whale like it should? Thanks, Greg

On a side note, I can't seem to use formatting in these posts anymore... can anyone help me get it back as I don't want my posts to be hard to read?.... maybe there was a recent update and I can't use firefox anymore?

Well i know that a sonar operator in game will not report an unknown contact, i didnt know you could set what it was on the notebook....
This message board looks fine in Firefox and so does your post.

This does not make sense. The radar obviously works if your crewman is calling out contacts. Since you cannot turn SD radar off, it always works. Not a bug. A feature.

-Pv- Ok, are there separate paragraphs in my posts, because they aren't coming through for me... I'm worried I might have accidentally enabled some setting that I can't figure out how to undo (I keep getting sticky keys turned on while panning the external cam and I have to reboot to turn them off..)

Edit: Deleted, testing revealed a need to clear cookies to get things back to normal
Sorry PV,it sounded right in my head, but it didn't translate to the fingers right!
:rotfl:
What I'm trying to say is that even though I have SD radar equipped, when I go to manually use it,it acts like I dont have it(Meaning I cant turn it on)
I'll search the fix but I wanted to clarify what i said so it didn't look like I can't explain stuff properly(I wouldn't be making this post if I did say it right the first time :rotfl: )

You can't manually use the SD radar and you can't turn it on or off, it's always on.
can the enemy detect sd radar?
if not, i should simply get it as soon as i can
(coming from SH3 where radar has virtually no use, only radar detectors are worth while)
