View Full Version : Great Patrol at Gibraltor Ruined

Time's mid 1942 and there's a large increase of DD's inside the harbor at Gibraltor as one would expect. Snuck in at night and positioned myself perfectly under the little coal minning ship to aim and sink the Nelson. Three eel spread and she sunk instantly, which of course brought DD's over to look around. As they were actual DD and not the little patrol boats they used active sonar to find out that I was hiding under the coal miner ship. They circled around it endlessly dropping charges here and there but never close enough to do any damage. Reloaded all the tubes and managed to sink the two of them.

Next target was the 3 Light Cruisers on the other side of the harbor. By then 2 more DD's had been dispatched and found me but through the use of decoys was able to get one of them to exhaust their DC's and sink the other one. Finally make it to the LC area and only have 2 eels left so aimed for the 2 Southhampton's. 1 sunk really fast, second one listed about 20 degrees but wouldn't go down. After nearly 6 hours (in real time) and 50,000 tons later decided to exit the harbor. Went for the opening in the subnet next to the harbor wall and net. Watching with the external cam saw that my boat was in perfect position and from what I could see had passed the net and was in open harbor. Switched to plot my course and increase the TC to 2. At this point all goes to hell, start taking tons of damage like I hit a mine. Check my status and there's a lot of damage (though 0% damage to the hull) and repaired everything. Afterwards set for 1 knot and same thing happened. Looked at the external cam and saw this:

This point was infuraited (not so much as the bug, but all the time wasted) since I knew I'd passed well beyond the wall. My last savegame wasn't even in CG 96 so couldn't be that bug. Only thing I could do was to try and surface and hope to use the exit patrol. Manage to actually surface enough to draw tons of enemy fire and actually have my watch crew up but no option to exit patrol. Six hours and a great patrol completely wasted from some stupid bug

I always say the same... !!!

Stay away of harbors and well protected bases. and more of the hellīs gate (gibraltar)

They are a very dangerous places full of mines, nets, or in this case concrete blocks
and if the thing is not enough dangerous, there are shallow waters and destroyers with a plenty load of depth charges.

Itīs like a mouse trying to steal some food near of the sleeping cat...:88)

Try to surface and not forget to destroy the enigma machine, code books, and other valuable devices...:hmm:.

Being in the 23rd Flottille makes getting to Gibraltor tenfold easier than any other base. Sometimes will sit in the (neutral) port just south of it and wait for bad weather to strike, makes crossing the chanel easier to avoid detection and can stay surfaced longer. Getting around the net is easy, once you hit the first target's when all hell breaks loose.

After all the frustration of the last raid that would've been perfect waited a bit to calm down and go again. This time got total vindication:

The weather for the whole week of my patrol was absolutely perfect, always rainy with moderate to heavy winds. Had quite a few DD's self destruct with shallow water DC's too close to their stern. Got lucky and sacked the flat top that was transferred there and 86'd her before she left for Alexandria. Took nearly 8 hours, and lots of caffeine to finally erase the memory of that aweful trick they played on me transporting my boat into solid rock :dead:

It's "Gibraltar", dammit. Seen the misspelling twice now in three days.
