Can't beat that for a belly landing. Very classy.

Given the circumstances that pilot did a perfect job.

I bet the pilot did not need his seat belts for that landing. I am sure the pilot's butt cheeks were clinching hard enough.

A most excellent landing.

I hope that the belly gunner of the B-17 was aware that the pilot was gonna land without wheels
They always stayed out of the ball when over friendly territory.

By statistics it was the safest postion on the aircraft!

Except when the pilot undertook a belly landing perhaps :hmm:

They probally had a sticker on the runway , ''if you can read this then you are in the wrong position'' ;)

nonetheless the B-17 was one of the most rugged bombers and if you see photos of some returned that received a pounding in their sortie you will be amazed that it still flew in the air, yes maybe beyond repair but the aircraft brought the crew home safe.

The unfortunate thing is that some belly landings did occur with the gunner in the turret. It was retractable, but sometimes hydraulic damage would make it impossible to retract and if the gunner was wounded and the turret couldn't retract...he was stuck there. (Plus the fact that I think the turret only retracted about halfway in...and I'm not sure if it was retractable on all B-17 models.).
