Q. Why do the Democrats have superdelegates?
A. Democrats got burned by democracy in many previous elections, so they decided that after the long primary battle between Democratic candidates for the president, they'll just go ahead and have their elites pick the winner.
Q. So why even have the primary process and not just have the superdelegates pick the winner?
A. The Democrats know they need to keep their voters busy or they might try thinking for themselves.
Q. The Democrats claim that the superdelegates only enhances the primary process. Is this true?
A. The stated purpose of the superdelegates is to make sure that the idiots who make up the Democrat base don't nominate someone unelectable.
Q. Like Barack Obama?
A. Yep. Shiny new candidate all the dummies flock to while the elites deep down know he's going to be a disaster.
Q. Plus, the Democrats don't want the minorities to get all uppity.
A. Well that goes without saying.
Q. So who are the superdelegates?
A. They are the elites of the elites -- the intelligentsia of the Democratic Party.
Q. White people!
A. Pretty much. While white men don't actually vote for Democrats anymore, they still run the party.
Q. I don't trust white people.
A. I'm not going to argue you should.
Q. So how does one get to be a superdelegate?
A. You have to work in the higher echelons of the party, laugh at religious people, and consistently underestimate middle America.
Q. And be white.
A. I didn't say it.
Q. It's time to take the party away from those honkeys!

Q. So is the superdelegate system pretty much assured to rip the Democratic Party apart?
A. Yes. You'd almost think some Republican operative came up with idea.

A. Republicans actually also have Superdelegates, but instead call them Supreme Court Judges! Like their Democrat counterparts, they come in at the end of a selection process and decide the overall winner.
However, unlike Democrat Superdelegates, Suprime Court Judges are not elected to represent the party at a convention, nor are they limited to choosing between Republican Candidates. In 2000, the Republicans actually decided between a Democrat and a Republican, nominating the candidate with the least votes to bypass the election and become President.

Gore took it to court. The Supreme Court just put an end to the 'recount after recount' charade. ALL the votes had been counted multiple times. BTW, after all those recounts, Gore never had the numbers to put him over the top. The Supreme Court didn't choose any winner, they simply stopped a Democrat party election theft attempt, after the votes showed Bush the clear winner. It was actually alot of fun to watch.

The American system seams far more complex than that in the UK.

Actually I worked for longer in DC, often for Republicans, then I have in Westminster. So I suspect I know as much about the neuonces of the US system as most on this forum.
My first post was purely an example of hummour and political ribbing, but anyway, back on topic...
...why can't this thread turn into a debate on the electoral collage. I find it facinating that a country which prides itself on being world leaders in political freedom, theory and practice should continue to rely on an electoral system that presumes the country is still in the 18th century.
And I know the "its because its the states" argument and such. But honestly, is there a democratic justification in 2008?

Since you don't, I have to doubt your claims of working in DC at all!

Where have I denied the electoral collage exists? I thought it was Liberals (according to Republicans) who make things up about their opponents to discredit them... not the other way round?
And on your doubts... given this forum allows us to debate in relative animity... and given that everyone lies at somepoint... well its your perogative to judge what I say. I just thought I'd give a response to the deeply patronising suggestion that I can't grasp US politics. :|\\
