Base and patrol questions?

What do I do w/ extra renown points? I can't get a new sub yet in May 1942. Do I dismiss some of the crew and get younger pups?

How long are out on patrol? I find it difficult staying under 60 days esp it takes days getting to and from base, finding ships, and sinking them. Once I'm out of fish, I return to pearl quickly.

If you want to spend some renown on crew, build up a good Damage Control team. You may not need them, but it's good to have a top notch crew ready. You could also upgrade other crew members that aren't doing so good.

New subs don't cost you renown in SH4, as far as I know. They're just randomly offered at the end of a patrol if one is available. However, if you're in May of '42, within the next couple of months you should be able to "buy" some surface search radar for your boat. Regardless, I'd stockpile the renown if you don't need it. Mk 27 torps are 500 each, and when they become available it's a good thing to have 1-2 on the boat, but that gets expensive after a while.

You are right to use your weapon load as to when to RTB. While you are home, upgrade everyone in critical positions to the highest you can afford. Get the best DC crew you can afford. I've not had much trouble doing this and keeping a margin of renoun for the expensive stuff later.
