Just for the pure hell of it i fired up SH3 / GWX2.1 and played around with the convoy attack training mission.

I had torpedoed 3 of the merchants, and the destroyer responded by attacking me with depth charges.

after evading him, i noticed that the ASW craft and the destroyer were shooting at one another and scoring hits on one another.

I wondered for a moment why this behavior was taking place? 2 british escorts shooting at one another?

it dawned on me that perhaps, because the conoy is neutral at the time of the attack, the destrtoyer - by retaliating with a depth charge attack - had become an enemy of his own nation because now he attacked a neutral unit and subsequently drew the wrath of the ASW trawler.

just curious... is that the explanation

This is a known issue that goes back to stok SH3 - if one of the attacking ships got between you and the other attacking ship, some of the rounds from the far ship will have hit it. As soon as one ship hit the other, they automatically become enemies and start fighting to the death.

Less honest Kaleuns have been known to surface next to a destroyer in a 'last ditch' attempt to get attacking ships to sink one another and give the Kaleun a chance to get away. With stock there was around a 50% chance of success. With GWX it's nearer to 0%!

this concept im familiar with... but the destroyer and the ASW trawler were no where near a position which would have resulted in crossfiring one another.

one was in front of the convoy on a 030 bearing, the other behind the convoy. on about a 310 bearing.

it was strange, just curious what the purpose of this action was... why not just make the ships in the training mission enemy instead of neutral.

not a big deal, i dont really care, just funny

I did that once in SHII, surfaced next to a grounded battleship and dove while the battlebuckets went for each other. Got credit for 2 BBs.

in stock SH3, after i used up all my torpedoes, I'd surface near a crippled merchant and wait for the DD to come, then keep the merchant between the DD and me, watch the rounds hit and sink the merchant. I didnt get the credit for it though

Wreford-Brown explanation is correct in the context of ships drawing friendly fire, but you've also answered your own query at the bottom of your initial post GR.....in the context of violating a nations neutrality in game thus becoming an enemy of (in this case all neutrals) for 24 hours.

Stooooopid coded bug
