Pretty old-ish news already, but just found this today. I remember reading about it's last mishap it had few years back when it was damaged and had to undergo some repairs.

Now, on 15th of April, it had it's first airshow flight after the accident back in 2005 and the friggin gears didnt came down! There goes the prop, engine most likely needs some work and definitly a new paintjob. STOP RUINING THE OLD PLANES FFS! :damn:

Might be easy to repair, but it will be costly and the owner had his doubts on whether to repair it back to fly condition back in 2005. :-?

Aye, read about the Black 6 too today. I bet everyone who has flown or flyes an BF109 will have his nerves tight on landing. You gotta make a nearly perfect landing or the undercarriage will bend and SLAM!

You lads can answer this I am sure. How come replicas are not made\used ( safe, reliable, etc ) vs. what goes on in these pics. Is it cost to build one, or is it more that folks don't want a replica, they want to see the real deal in action.

Would you like to sail in a replica of a WWII sub or the real deal? ;) Seeing a machine built over 65 years ago still up there in the skies doing barrel rolls and loops is much more enjoyable for me than knowing it isnt the real deal. And then there's the thing that you know someone flew it back then, and the plane always carried that someone home safe.

But of course, for example the 'Red 7' doesnt have it's original Daimler Benz engine anymore. And I'm sure the 'Black 6' has parts of it "rebuilt".

But yes, you have a point. A replica would be much safer, as you could have fail-safe systems built to them etc.

Thanks for the reply.

As you can see I don't get to many air shows  I would definitely would go for the authentic sub.

I did see one of these at the last show I was at , a CF-18 Hornet :D Not a classic, but still cool to see it up close and in flight.

Even the ones that flew back then arent 100% anymore.

parts that where damaged, worn out or dont work properly anymore are replaced with newer parts, rebuild thanks to the old blue-prints ofcourse but a pricey job as it mostly must be custom made.

mostly the Engines are replaced, but heck what else you expect after 65 years?
also its safer as there is less chance of engine failure in flight.
but I'm glad that they replace it with a somewhat similar engines.

but still the ones that are flying is just amazing, for me they beat the New jets anyday.

check the Tribute thread, we mostly post tributes made with footage of the warbirds that still fly today

Nice. I dont think we have any big airshows in Finland, especially any with WWII planes. Tho, IIRC, we have 2 Messerschmitt 109s in museums. :hmm:

I was about to say..too bad there is no HE111 flying about...
well at least in this footage of a B17 tour you see one HE111 taxiing

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFcszAzfIvg

and that one was the LAST flyable HE111 before the terrible crash

from wikipedia:

Approximately 14 Spanish licensed built He 111's (designated CASA 2.111 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CASA_2.111)) survive today in various conditions on display or storage. One modified Spanish 2.111D served as a transport for Spanish VIPs, including General Francisco Franco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_Franco), before being purchased in England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England) by the Commemorative Air Force (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commemorative_Air_Force) in 1977. It remained the last He 111 in flyable condition until July 10 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_10), 2003 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003), when it was destroyed in a fatal crash landing. The aircraft was attempting a landing at the Cheyenne Municipal Airport, near Cheyenne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheyenne), Wyoming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyoming), while en route from Midland, Texas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midland%2C_Texas) to an air show in Missoula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missoula), Montana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montana). Eyewitness reports indicate the aircraft lost power to one engine on final approach and ploughed through a chain link fence before colliding with a school bus washing building under construction. Killed were CAF pilot Neil R. Stamp and co-pilot Charles S. Bates.

Nice. I dont think we have any big airshows in Finland, especially any with WWII planes.

Kauhava is pretty big, we have some others at times.
WW2 planes though are rare in Finland.

Well a bit more complicated
After the Nazis captured Greece, all what was left of RHAF {Royal Hellenic Air Force(was Royal back then)}
escaped to the middle east and africa and fought along side with RAF.
The English gave a few spitfires in the early 1944 to replace the hurricanes,
after the war they returned back to Greece and fought in the civil war
From 1949 until 1954 when they were retired Greece had about 300 of them.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: OK I understand, you can't see what is in front of you when you taxi in this plane, but at least he could check if anything is standing around the plane before he got in. And I don't think, that helo just came out of nowhere.

There's two slightly bigger museums that stick out, Vantaa's museum, which pretty much only has civilian planes and then there's the "Finnish Air Force Museum" at Tikkakosi which has mainly military planes. Mig21, Saab Safir, Draken, VL Humu (Finn's own model based heavily on Brewster Buffalo), Me109G and finnish Pyörremyrsky. There's some more planes, but I think those are the one's worth mentioning. ;)
