Hello,

I'm starting to play with SH IV and the manual doesn't say almost anything about the operation of the radars and sonar.

For instance, when I have no radars installed on my boat, I get some messages like, AR contact long range. Where does this contact come from if I have no radar ?

The fact that when the sub doesn't have such equipment and it still shows in the game as being switched off is kind of corny and inaccurate, the developers should pay more attention to these details that make the simulation historically accurate.

When I have both radars installed, the ranges can be selected, but what are the ranges ? How many miles ? On the A-scope radar, how do you manually rotate the antenna ? When it is rotating automatically I can see the contacts of planes on it but I don't know the bearing.

Help anyone ?

Every boat has SD radar from the beginning. That means the contacts you are seeing/hearing are aircraft so the devs are not wrong, however, there should have been a scope for it and there is not.

The scopes you have on your ship are for surface search (SJ radar). If you will look at your navigation map, you'll see the contact. You can measure the distance with the ruler. If your submerged, you can get your distance through sonar by pinging him but be careful, if there is an escort in the area you just gave away your position. You can get your range with your periscope but that all gets into targeting which there are very good tutorials here on this site that can explain it much better than myself.

Hope this is some kind of help and welcome to Subsim!
