View Full Version : annoying radio messages
Playing with GWX, every time I load the game a couple of old radio messages get repeated. For example, on a recent Spring 1941 patrol, every time I would reload I kept getting messages about Axis victories in the dester at Sollum and Fort Capuzo. Additionally, daily radio messages roll in at like 18:36, 19;06 or 19:36 that often have trivial information about bombings or X number of English planes shot down, etc. Now that Barbarossa has started the number of messages is getting annoying.
I appreciate the immersive aspect of the radio messages and know on the long U-Boat voyages news from home was welcome and even incorporated into ship's newspapers, but. . .
1. If I ignore the radio messages is there any renown loss?
2. Is there any way to avoid old messages being repeated when one reloads?
3. Is there any way to have the radio messages not automatically adjust the time compression back to x1?
4. Is there any way to just shut the radio messages off completely, and if so would I miss anything really useful like a convoy report?
Thanks for the input.

No. The messages are for immersion only. Ocassionally you'll get a message that pertains directly to the game, but not responding doesn't affect your renown (except for the ships you don't sink, of course).
2. Is there any way to avoid old messages being repeated when one reloads?
I'm not sure about reloading, but the messages are set to play once or to repeat until a certain time, depending on their programming.
3. Is there any way to have the radio messages not automatically adjust the time compression back to x1?
Use SH3 Commander. Time compression control is one of its many cool functions. If not, you can change settings in Data/Cfg/Main.
4. Is there any way to just shut the radio messages off completely, and if so would I miss anything really useful like a convoy report?
Data/Campaigns/messages_en (or whichever language you're using). I'm not sure if just removing it would have an adverse affect. It would probably be better to replace it with the one from the stock game. Convoy reports come from a separate game trigger, I think, so you wouldn't lose anything.
Data/Campaigns/messages_en (or whichever language you're using)
Yeah, that's what I do. I don't delete them all, rather I go through and delete the ones that are meaningless.
Ones about countries declaring war or surrendering, and ones about scripted GWX events I leave.
I only do a few months at a time depending where I am in the campaign. But I've considered redoing the whole thing to get rid of all the meaningless messages.
But then someone came out with a mod that had more messages to scripted GWX events and I wanted to add that into it.
Then I got lazy and didn't do anything. :(

3.well im sure that when you recieve a direct message to you ( not a contact report) the game reverts to real time no matter what...unless you change real time to something higher...but this would only cause problems i assume.
4. as said above going to data/campaign/mess en. and deleting a large portion would help.....i have danurves mod installed for extra messages cos i like that kinda stuff.......also you could always remove your radioman from his station on long t/c hauls!!!!
p.s im sure theres a "light messages" mod somewhere....try a search:up:

The problem being that if you set Radio Message time to something high like 1000TC, then you will often find yourself reacting to convoy reports hours after the message was recieved. So it's sort of pick your posion unless you want to go in and edit the message file or remove it completely.

It doesn't on my machine. I have Commander set to keep TC high when messages are received. It works fine for stock messages, but the GWX2 immersion messages still knock me down to 1x.

Hmm. Maybe that is the way it is. Can't remember as I've just edited the file for awhile now.

But then someone came out with a mod that had more messages to scripted GWX events and I wanted to add that into it.
The GWX Mission Orders mod is below my signature.
The original version contains all the original GWX messages (with the GWX team's kind permission) less one or two duplicated ones so if you're already using GWX you should see no change less the duplications and you shouldn't be overly swamped with messages. There are also an additonal 109 messages designed to put you into the action in GWX.
I think I've got rid of all repeated messages - try it out and if you do find any repeated messages then let me know and I'll delete them and distribute a v1.1.

Before you go cremating your mesaages file;
The reason you get the repeated messages in the game is a) your save/reload is durring an unexpired "transmit untill received" timer/message b) durring an active timer.
Easy fix; open your \Data\Campaigns\Campaign\messages_en.txt file with a quality editor, Not notepad, and don't word frackin wrap. That will frack up the tab order. In the 5th. column you'll see a single number 1 or 0. Change the 1's to 0's you would like to affect. Be aware some of these messages are 1 (untill received) for a reason. But not critical for gameplay.
Also be aware SH3 Commander does make it easy to alter your T/C, but be aware of sound glitches stated in the FAQ as a result of such changes. As long as you set T/C back to defaults and rollback before adding Mods you should be ok. Also note: the T/C setting in commander for 'Radio Reports' does Not alter T/C for Radio Messages. You will need to change T/C for 'Real Time' which could alter T/C for other jazz.
1. If I ignore the radio messages is there any renown loss?
No loss, messages are largely immersion.
4. Is there any way to just shut the radio messages off completely, and if so would I miss anything really useful like a convoy report?
You could open the messages file and delete the contents, but that is a lousy option.
You could use the stock/basic install included with RL_E.
You could give the radioman a break, but you could miss convoy radio reports then. If you remove content from the messages file this will not affect radio reports sent from the game. In other words if you use RL_E or one of the more basic message mod/files as stated above it has no affect on the Radio Reports.
The golden rule is always be in-port before you JSGME. Modded message files can be an exception unless perhaps your talking about saved games where it wants to pull from an unexpired message. Having said that, I can also state in testing RL_E & the Update I have not had one problem switching out content durring any save, even from a resupply point. And I'm talking almost 11,000 messages.

Well. itīs very easy remove the messages from the radio. Keep away your radio man from the radio room .:yep:
In my actual patrol i arrive to the caribbean with a total radio silence and undetected by planes or ships.

Danoh, I'm glad you brought this up.
It reminded me that BDU wanted me to tell all of you:
Be more aggressive.
That is all.

I did for a while, and then it got to be about 1943.
The constant stream of boats lost messages made me think about cutting myself.
.... well, not really.
But it did get a little depressing.
Oh why couldn't the other boats play it smart like me?

Look at the TC caption again - "When receive radio report". Radio report <> radio message. They are different events.
Radio messages are tied to the "Real time" TC setting. But be aware, other events are tied to this setting as well. Further, if you set the Real time TC greater than the TC for certain other events, unexpected side effects may occur.

sigh... :dead:
Slick Rick; Did you find 'Real Time'? If you do and change it I would make a mental note to change T/C back to defaults before you JSGME other mods.
Kaleu. Jochen Mohr; your d/l's are Loaded with tab spacing errors. It might not seem so in a text editor but open it in exel and you'll see what I mean. That can be fixed easily with a good editor & a macro.
Also I keep noticing with other versions of radio logs being released the same other issues with timer settings ect being re-released over and over again. :nope:
Messages can be added / changed all day long, with custom jazz. But if the 'gear' behind it is faulty then what good is it realy?

No, I think most people enjoy them. That's why GW is loaded with them.
The reason you hear from the minority of people who don't want any meaningless messages is most efforts are geared to making more, not less. :p

No, not alone. I downloaded IrishRed's original Radiolog mod when he released it two years ago, and love the expanded version even more.
