You really need to check out the box as there seem to be three main versions - original German, German with subtitles and English dubbed.

The German with subtitles is, IMHO, the best of the bunch if you're a non-German speaker.

I have the directors cut of the film and prefer to watch it in German with subtitles, even if I have the option to watch it in english. It just looses some impact in english.

The yell of "ALARM!" still send shivers up my spine!

The nice thing about the dubbed version is that all the actors where able to voice their Englisch selves.

It is interesting to watch Das Boot dubbed in English with English subtitles.

They don't match up very well :)

There's another version produced by Superbit; the picture quality is supberb if you've got a really good dvd player and hd tv. Haven't seen the other one, though really would like to see the special features on the other version.

I'm not sure that all of the actors did I have an audiobook of Das Boot read by Wolf Kahler and it states that he dubbed the voice of the first engineer in the English version.

To quote the publisher's site...
"Wolf Kahler was the voice of the first engineer in the English-dubbed version of the feature film of Das Boot and played a U-boat captain in Britannic. Stage work includes the National Theatre, the Freehold Company and Steven Berkoff. Films: Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Remains of the Day and Barry Lydon. He has done extensive TV and radio work."

Yes.

Everyone keeps quoting the box. I've watched it many times and always used the subtitles.

Is it the 5-hour uncut version, or the 3 1/2-hour Director's Cut?

This is the version I have and the one I believe is best for you: (you'll obviously want the Region 1 version for North America and Canada).

It has been digitally remastered and includes both the English and German languages as well as English subtitles.

Klicked your link to Amazon out of curiosity and some idiot wants $45.00 for Directors Cut.:rotfl:

I bought Full version for $19.99 at Frys Electronics and the SUPERBIT Directors cut at Walmart for $14.99

As much as I love Das Boot it isn't that rare. ($45.00):yep:

I own the VHS version which contains 3 video tapes. This is the original, non-director's cut. As being one who once knew every single dialog of this movie I really missed some scenes in the cut version.

But I would really like to see the english synchronised version once.
Does anybody know where at least some extracts from it can be viewed ? I didn't find anything on youtube.

Uttering deep concerns about the end result, Buchheim felt that unlike his clearly anti-war novel the adaptation was "another re-glorification and re-mystification"[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Boot#cite_note-buchheim-1) of German WWII U-boat war, German heroism and nationalism, and he called the film a cross between a "cheap, shallow American action flick"[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Boot#cite_note-buchheim-1) and a "contemporary German propaganda newsreel from World-War II" Rest here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Boot

As a child I loved this film, though.

Edit: Does anybody know Buchheim's full comments to the movie at the time it was being published ?
http://www.staff.uni-marburg.de/~naeser/buchheim.htm (http://www.staff.uni-marburg.de/%7Enaeser/buchheim.htm)
Don't know if there is a translation somewhere. If not, maybe I should translate and post it ?

go with the special directors cut. subtitles are always better than dubbed.
