I have never paid much attention to E-books until my publisher notified me this morning that besides the present paper edition, a Kindle edition of my book will be offered soon. This sent me into a wild scramble researching the subject.

What is your opinion on this revolutionary gadget? (it costs $399)
Do you own one?

Call me a technophobe and Luddite if you want, but I cant really see whats wrong with carrying a book with you, unless you want to be able to read 7 different things during the day? :doh:

Why can't a standard windows based hand held be used instead of paying $400 for a specialist electronic library?

I remember the Palm Tungsten from about 2005 could read PDF's so there's cheaper options.

If it could only be used for reading I would maybe pay $80 for it. They could make up the loss in book sales kind of like how the XBox was priced. They get their money by the games sold. I bet in a few years it will work down to that.

Emphasis on the word just. Besides, the best measure of a man's intelligence is how closely he agrees with you. Anybody capable of mentioning the great Ludd without having to look it up has got to be brilliant.

Can't say it would interest me at all, I find books as objects to have a beauty about them. Bit of a solution looking for a problem really.

Th real benefit is the space saved on all your groaning shelves. I think it has a free wireless connection direct to Amazon so that you can purchase books direct, that's quite cool. I think that Sony also have a similar device that may be better. There is also another I think coming from I-River that looks good.

That is a good point though I've got books coming out of my ears! :D

Assuming that the screen is as advertized and commented upon, then, assuming one buys 2 books a month, the gizzmo would pay for itself in something like two years.

I'm a bookie, so I still would need paper books on the shelf. But I like the idea of finishing reading a book and being able to click from anywhere and have another book within a minute.

I don't have a TV or other gizmoes except a computer. I'm often accused of being a luddite. ;)

It looks to be a neat toy, but not much more. Having favorite newspapers and magazines handy instantly is great for the travelling businessman, but does it come with all the pictures?

Not only that, but the video mentioned that it uses cell phone connections rather than wi-fi, so the connections are claimed to be better.

My biggest problem with it is that most of the books I want are hard-to-find reference works. If they'll make those available, and cheap, maybe I'll give it a look. Then again, if those books become available online I'll want them on my computer, not on an external device.

I can't see myself getting one anytime soon.

I will NEVER read books in this format. There's just something about having a nice crisp actual book in your hand, the feel of the pages, and that new book smell !!
