Subject: CS1(SS) George Scheer Eternal Patrol 4/9/08
It is with saddness I report the departure of CS1(SS) George Scheer on eternal patrol at his home in Waycross, Georgia. George got his mother to lie about his age so he could join the Navy and he did
on January 6, 1942. While doing escort duty aboard the USS ELLYSON DD434 a submarine surfaced
close aboard and he saw the serpent want to get back down below where it belonged. That night changed his life and he requested transfer to submarine school. Thus his journey and love for the
submarine force began. He served first under Lcdr Hillson on the Perch (313) his qual boat. He eventually would become king of the galley as he became lead cook. He then started his run of transfers going to the Kraken SS370, Besugo SS321, Pomfret SS391, Sterlet SS392, Queenfish
SS393, Torsk SS423, and Brill SS330. As the submarine force was revitalized during the Korean War he got to learn about guppies aboard the Clamagore SS343. He was proud of his many war patrols and opportunities he had to serve during WWII.
While on liberty he met a girl named "Sallie" and in July 1961 they married, he retired, moved to
Brunsswick, Ga. and raised his family. He is survived by Sallie and his daughter a family physician in Orange County Ca. and engineer son in Selma, Al.
George worked and dedicated his retired life to the St. Mary's Submarine Museum and submarine activities at the base in Kings Bay. Even though his Parkinson disease and crippling body did not
allow him to physically do as much as he could, he mustered strength to utiilize all his mental strength to give what he could to his submarine families. I will never forget the day he called me in 2005 to congratulate me on starting the USS STERLET (SS392) Association and his desire to help me grow it.
He then called me every day for over 3 months until we covered everything he could remember about not only the Sterlet, but submarine history. We had continued our chats until only recently
when I am sure he just couldn't muster the strength. I know the Sterlet memorabilia I sent him has
found a place in the St. Mary's Museum and I hope to visit it soon.
On behalf of the entire USS STERLET (SS392) Asssocation and our families we send our "Prayers and Strength" to Sallie and George's family as he begins his "Eternal Patrol" . We are a "Last Man Standiing Organization" and we hope that we will always have in our "Submariine Families" people like
George that give so much to preserve the memories for all of us. "Sailor Rest Your Oar" "Attention on
Deck" Cook George has assumed the watch.
