View Full Version : GWX seizing up on starting

Hello everyone,

I have just installed the GXW 2.0 mod, but somehow it seizes up when I start a career. It loads the mission, but when it's done loading, it'll seize up.
The training missions do work fine.

What is the problem here? Is my computer not up to it, or is it a glitch?

Thanks in advance,

Kaleun Zimmerman

Hmm, do you mean it crashes to desktop and gives you soem sort of windows error message or do you mean that the red loading bar is full but nothing seems to be happening...

in the first case, could you post your PC specs and any error you might get...

in the second, your impatience got the better of you, if you hadn't seen the "not so long ago...." screen yet, there is no reason to panic, I've noticed that especially when first loading a campaign after the install it may take a very long time to get going, but it does do so, the red loading bar is also not very accurate the first time you load up a campaign..

could you post you PC specs anyway, it'll help us help you

Is the career you are loading a pre-GWX 2.0?

Hello again and thanks for the replies, here are some of my computer specs, I'm not sure what you'll need...(don't know much about computers...)

AMD Sempron Processor 3200+
1.79 GHz
704 MB

Not sure where to find the rest of it.

Oh, and my error was the first situation kaleun Cranky suggested. It will start the red loading bar, and when that's finished, it'll just return to windows, sometimes with, sometimes without an error-message (which doesn't say what kind of error it is)

EDIT: the career is a brand new one, and isn't loaded from the old SHIII save-game folder (which I deleted)

Hmm.. on a related note, my GWX has started to do the exact same thing....

... and has gotten progressively worse, unfortunately.

I am writing this message from Safe Mode, actually.

I suspect it has something to do with nHancer.

I was running fine, tried out nHancer, lost all damage effects.... so I uninstalled it.

Then the game kept crashing just as a mission was about to load.
So I decided to reboot... and no dice.

Unable to boot, Windows just seizes up.

So I'm on here trying to find out what drivers are affected and to try and reverse the problem!

Edit:

Problem solved by re-downloading the Nvidia Force Driver Service pack.
I've got gameplay and some smoke / fire. But enhanced damage still seems to be out of order.... I don't get the secondary explosions.
Is there any difference in the order I activate the Mods?
I'm running it:

English Nav References
Integrated Orders
16km Atmosphere
Merged Campaign
Enhanced Damage Effects

I've tried doing 16km after Damage, with no results... I was pretty sure thats how I was running before and I had no problems.
Any suggestions?

And to Frank: I suggest you try and disable a few Mods running as well, or post a list of what you're running in what order, and maybe someone will be able to sort it out!

It almost sounds like the save game bug. Or, have you deleted Player from the list of campaign names? That'll do it.

I too havce noticed an increase in the number of times the game crashes. It seems to have something to do with what mods are loaded.

There seem to be two kinds of crash, the game loads you start a new career, assign crew and hit the map to go on patrol, red bar moves left to right about an inch and then just freezes, thats it nothing happens the whole thing is locked

The second is the game loads you start a new career, assign crew and hit the map to go on patrol, red bar moves left to right then just before its ready a dialogue box comes up telling you it can access memory or some such and then theres a bunch of 1s and a string of 0000000's and an option to press ok to quit or cancel to de-bug

Interestingly it seems this bug does not happen if you make no crew change, ie if you start a career, and hit the map to go on patrol the game will load and there's no problem. There seems to be a bug in one of the mods, I've set out a list of activated mods perhaps someone might notice whats wrong.

Hmm, unfortunately (or lucky for me) more people have the same problem. I will try starting a new carreer without making a crew chance, I hope that does it!
I won't be able to do this untill tomorrow, so I'll post then what I found.

Before you do that, have you tested your downloaded GWX installation files using MD5 mate? This program check to see if the files you downloaded are corrupted or not.

It sounds to me that either your install of SH3 1.4b was not fully 'clean' or your GWX files are corrupted.

For links & instructions vist the FAQ page on the GWX Website (Below my Sig).

Be easier to track all errors if the following info posted

When CTD you will get a pop up
Click on the blue text " click here "

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h22/bigboywooly/ScreenHunter_168-1.jpg

That will give you a second pop up with the actual reason for CTD - highlighted in the pic below

Hello again everyone,

Firstly, thank you all for the effort you spend on getting this fixed, I really appreciate it!
However...I still could not get the career to work, but here's what I tried:

- Tried the MD5 mate, all files matched and were correct.
- Tried starting a career without crewchanges, this did not work, but it also didn't give me a error message (but it did return to windows)
- No mods were activated (so it shouldn't have been this)

Hmm, it also seems that the 'Player' from campaign list has been deleted, would this be the problem?
And if so, how to get it back in there? Reinstalling the game?

Do you have SHC 3.0 installed ?

That's probably your problem. Create a new Player call "Player". Then create a campaign. I don't know about starting a new campaign, but you can't load an old campaign without "Player" also being in the career folder. Your new career can be any name, you just have to have that "Player" as a 2nd placeholder. Isn't software great :88) ?

Frank0001

Software is great! Just not at this moment...

It will not give me the option to create a new player ingame, so I created a new folder in the SH3 folder. I copied the files from the 'player' folder into this new one.
However, it still doesn't work!

Perhaps it's a patch-problem? When I have the stock-game installed, it'll tell me I have v1.4 installed.
I once downloaded the 1.4b patch, but it says I already had it, so are v1.4 and 1.4b the same?

EDIT: Here's my Detection Tool outcome, does this have anything to do with it?

Maybe i'm just dumb :yep: But something looks weird on your rig specs.

704 Memory ?:-? Is that the amount of Ram ?

Was looking at that. How many sticks of RAM do you have in. If it's two, are they matched. Never heard of such an amount personally.

Could it be you have one 512MB stick and one 250MB stick of non identical RAM ? :hmm:

It seems that your PC is out of memory. One way to counter this is by increasing your Page File/Swap file (aka virtual RAM).

Goto....

Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance - Settings > Advanced - Virtual Memory - Change & change the value to 3056 for both boxes then click SET. You will need to reboot. If you have a second HDD put the Page File on that instead of the HDD that is housing SH3.

While you are in the System Properties, enable windows error reporting (which is what BBW is asking for).

Goto....
System > Advanced > Error Reporting. Make sure it's enabled.

Er......I have no idea really, there is indeed 1 x 256 and 1 x 512 installed. However, I'm not sure if they are matched or not (I haven't heard of of that before!)
How can I check if they are matched? (A code on the sticks themself?)

That's what I was thinking Jim. 512mb + 256mb = 768mb.

Yes 1.4 and 1.4b are one and the same
Ubi talk eh

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\****\My Documents\SH3\data\cfg\Careers and create a folder called Player

Dont think that is the issue though as I dont have one called Player in mine yet anyone of my 8 test careers start ok

Try as dan suggested

Allright then, I did what Danlisa suggested (and woa, I never even would've thought of this, I still don't know what it does though!)

I've just re-installed SHIII plus GWX 2.0, I'll edit this message to see what happens.

Frank, you should look at getting another 512 stick to go with the other one.

Any time you mis-match, you limit your memory.

As far as I have been told, RAM is only as fast as the weakest link.

Pop in another 512, (or two, or three, depending on how many DIMMs you've got left!).

But be sure to get the right kind.
If it's SDRAM, you're going to need another SDRAM stick in 512, and it will be considerably more expensive than newer DDR RAM.

I paid 104.00 CDN at Futureshop for a 512 SDRAM stick.... as a last resort.
Checking the local computer shops proved fruitless (several guys actually laughed and just said "good luck").
But Staples / Futureshop should have it.

It actually works!

Thank you everyone, you are true heroes!
I must apologize for all the inconvenience and efforts I caused you all, but I greatly appreciate it.

I am glad to be sailing on your side!

Hope to see you out there in the waves,

No inconvenience at all. Glad to have you with us.

Be sure to realise though that you do need more system RAM, the workaround I have shown you is not a permanent fix. You will have a better gaming experience with more RAM. Your HDD (Swap File) is not as fast as sticks of RAM.

Anyway, sink em all.

I will do that as soon as possible, it shouldn't be too expensive I reckon, and certainly it'll save abit of frame-rate (read: headache), haha.

Again, thank you for all the good advice.
