Struggling a bit with this sim. I know you have to be surfaced to use the radar, but is there anything else that needs doing? I'm going to the radar whilst surfaced and cannot get it going. I can alter range knobs etc, but the "on/off" toggle lights up but refuses to move. Funnily enough, it works fine in the sub "school", but not in campaign. And I REALLY need it  . Any ideas?
PS it is patched to 1.4
Cheers, Andy :D

What's the date, and what type of boat do you have? The two displays on the boat are both for the surface search radar. The thing is, surface search radar doesn't become available until mid-1942 at the earliest, and standard on most boats until 1943 sometime. Unless you're starting a career in a full sized boat in 1943 or later, you have to buy the radar with renown. The likely thing is that you don't have it, and thus you can't turn it on. Sub school is based around a radar equipped boat, so it worked there.
The air search radar is probably standard on your boat at the beginning of the war, but there are no controls for it. The SD radar is always on when you're surfaced.

Hi
Cheers for that. My campaign is 1941, so I guess that figures then. I just assumed that 'cos I could see it in my sub, then I must be able to use it. Guess it must be a bit of an oversight on Ubi's behalf to have it on show before it's ready.
Thanks a lot, I'm off to try and sink summat then :D :D

Watch out for DDs, they get cranky easily

The game has a limited number of interior 3D models. I think it has one for the S boats and one for all the others, but I don't recall if the Porpoise has its own model or if it uses the same as the Gar/Tambor/Gato/Balao boats use. Because of this, the radar displays are modeled in already.
Personally, I'd prefer to have the model change, but that would be a bit more work, and I don't know how hard it would have been to get the engine to change models based on equipment availability. Suppose you chose not to or did not have the renown to buy the SJ radar? What if you have the SJ-1 improved radar? I guess they chose the easy route and just modeled the displays but left them inoperable until the gear was installed.

It could just give you some sort of warning, as if whatever radar man normally mans the post is letting you know that you don't have an SD radar installed (I've been wondering what that meant and why it wasn't available for my sub, thanks for the answer guys!)
I haven't tried using it myself, but was wondering why it'd pick up aircraft but not ships, that answers that question :D

I had surface radar available on my 4th or 5th patrol.
Though..... I had to sell my soul to get it.
