View Full Version : Where to find bigger warships?

I guess this has been asked a hundred times, but my forum search yielded no results. So far I have seen nothing bigger than a dido light cruiser (which was stationary near scapa flow, but mysteriously disappeared while I was manoeuvring for my 1st non-destroyer-warship kill). Although it feels a bit gamey to ask you because of the hindsight, but a Kaleun can not thrive on an endless continuum of merchant ships. It gets quite boring with time.

So where do the taskforces hide at? I want some challenge. The thrill of sneaking past the destroyer escorts to find juicy battleships, cruisers and carriers inside must be worth the risk.

Oh and I am playing vanilla 1.4 and it is now March 1941.

Vanilla is not known for being challenging. Plus number of any ships is much smaller then what you get with any big mod.

For that you need GWX or some other bigger mod.In combination of that and playing with high level of realism setting(eg. manual targeting) , you will have plenty of it , specially from '42 and on.

As for BB's , if you get TF report follow that and you will find some.

Opposite to common belief , BB's and other big ships were not taking casual cruises IRL and generally were spending more time in ports refitting and such.

cheers

try this it maybe can help you, there are ship's entry dates and locations
maybe you consider it as cheating.

also try the map that came with the game, probably located at the documentation folder of the game

for having more often big warships they are several solutions you can add mod like Harbour traffic 1.47 with enhanced the traffic or the great GWX2 or your can add them by yourself by using the mission editor . for infos about warships movements it exist several sites like wikipedia or this one (http://www.scharnhorst-class.dk/index.html)

downloading GWX2.0 right now, let's see if that solves my Kaleun's problems

with GWX, try your luck near Malta, it seems to be task force alley

Yes on my second patrol i went down there and i sort of engaged a task force with just a deck gun, needless to say i was owned quicker then you could say 'Schnaps.'

Gotta say that GWX is magnificent. Really teaches you to appreciate every single ship you sink. Also the game isn't so lenient with medals and promotions (for you and for the crew). Love it.

With GWX you'll run across plenty of taskforces (like it or not) along the way with anything from just an Auxillary cruiser to several BB's and more. To find larger ships in port good places to look are Scapa, Loch Ewe, Gibraltor, Alexandria among others. Depending on the time period certain area will have a lot of activity; some for specific historical events; others will have more prolonged activity (like the Med in 42-43).

Getting into Loch Ewe was near a suicide mission.
First time the game crashed as I was approaching the coast from the east.
Second time I got in, sunk several ships to a note of 50K. Before all the fighting I went far away from the harbor and was afraid of the fishing boat to spot me but I had to surface to get some fresh air.

On my way out the only reason I got lucky with the DD is, because the IO was stupid.
He would circle around me and when dropping charges they would go too deep.
It was super shallow as well, I barely got out alive with the batteries always going 3 - 5 meters from the floor. I shoot 3 torps at a DD but only one hit due to a bad angle (damn torpedo nets). It is sometime early 1942 GWX 2.
Would not do it again.
Also I modded my crew and virtually all people have some skills. GWX 2 is tough!

I just slipped into loch ewe and it was dead easy, now i have to decide between a southampton class, a floating dock and a modern tanker. Tough choices.
