Hi everybody!

I've been lurking on here for some time now and enjoying it immensely. I've been playing SH3 for about 3 months now and feel that I'm ready to upgrade to the highly-touted GWX....but naturally I'm having a problem and I know that it's because I'm just a bit too long in the tooth to be very proficient in the operation of these confangled computer machines.

I'll try to get to the point here as best I can in hopes that one of you guys can take me by the hand so to speak and help me out. Bear in mind that you will have to talk down to me, as I don't converse well at all in computerese.

I downloaded GWX2 and it currently resides in "my documents". When I go to install it gives me that annoying "you screwed up again, fool" ding sound and greets me with this message "Please insert disk one and click OK"...what does this mean?

I know the answer lies on these pages somewhere and I've tried to find it myself before I hung my head in shame and brought myself before you all...But one thing I have noticed in my lurkings is that you guys are a friendly and patient lot, which is a real rarity in many of these types of forums.

I even have an empty folder waiting on my desktop already labeled and waiting to receive GWX2.0, like I read somewhere to do....but I'm stumped....

I guess I should mention that I have the already 1.4 patched (manual-less) copy of SH3 and am running XP.

There, I've done it and I don't feel quite as bad as I thought I would. Here's hoping one or more of you would be kind enough to help me get hooked up here so that I don't have to do what I did before (abandon hope and go back to figuring I'm doomed to playing stock SH3 for the rest of my life...not that that would necessarily be a bad thing).....It's a bit like resigning myself to eating hamburger because I 'm too stupid to figure out how to unwrap the filet mignon.

Thanks for your time, guys!

(I don't think I'm even worthy of "bilge rat" status)

Welcome aboard,
Someone with good expertise will show up soon. I don't understand why it tells you to insert disk as you dhould have the wizard screen appear once you activate the exe file , which should be in your folder

Welcome aboard.
Make a folder on your desktop, and label it GWX. Put all the downloaded files in it; then click on the install file, and it should go.
Check back it you have a problem.

Thanks for the welcome, guys.

I thought I was making progress but instead the frustration intensifies.
The first time I downloaded GWX I ended up with the install wizard only, so I just went to another site and came away with a BIN file...but now I don't know how to unpack it..I somehow managed to convert it over to RAR which looked familiar to me and then extracted it to my GWX desktop folder (thinking it would extract all the files to there) but when I opened up the folder all that was there was the original BIN file....back to square one.

This is where my lack of knowledge with these things really comes back to bite me..

------
Just saw your post, danlisa....I'll come back to your link after I wake up. Maybe things will be clearer to me after some sleep...Thanks much!

You need to download ALL the .bin files (7 i think) and put them in that folder you created on your desktop along with the .exe setup file.
Once thats done just run the exe and it`ll unpack and install GWX2 from the bin files.

You shouldnt need to unzip/unpack or extract anything yourself:up:

Start over. Make a folder anywhere on your computer, label it GWX. Download all files to this folder (don't do anything to them). I think there are about 5 or 6 bin files and one exe file. When you have them all loaded into the GWX folder, double click on the exe file and everything will download to SHIII.

This is what should be in ONE folder:

GWX2-1.bin
GWX2-2.bin
GWX2-3.bin
GWX2-4.bin
GWX2-5.bin
GWX2-6.bin
GWX2-7.bin
GWX2.exe

Success, Gentlemen! (I'm just making an assumption that we're probably all of the male variety here)

I want to thank each and every one of you who chimed in with your help and warm welcomes.

Yes, the answers were there all along of course, it's just that as I said before, I'm still (and at my age always will be) computer-challenged, and so I dropped the ball from the beginning. Now that I know where I went wrong (thanks to the helpful nudgings from you guys) I feel even more like a rube!

My biggest regret is that I didn't come crawling to you all sooner, but I guess it didn't hurt me any to keep on plugging away at the stock sim. I finally figured out manual targetting and all (except sometimes I still think a ship is still yet to cross in front of me when it turns out it had actually passed by already....still gotta work on that AoB thing!..and yes I did recently find the truly excellent tutorial on that).

Anyway, I've only had time to go in and have a quick look around..Man am I impressed by just the small glimpse I've gotten!...Really makes me wish I didn't have to leave for work now..Hats off and gratitude to all involved with this project...This should keep me "lost" for a long time to come.

Again, a huge thanks to you all...I truly appreciate your kind patience to this bilge rat. You all can be very proud of this fine community, and I'm happy to be here.

Happy hunting, guys!! (and gals if there are any)
