Yes, there is a fantastic special edition DVD of "The Sand Pebbles" loaded with extras & docs and the fansite above is a great tribute to the film.

I've recently read the McKenna novel and it's amazing how much of the book Robert Wise managed to get on the screen. Steve McQueen is at his finest here as is Richard Crenna as the ship's captain, simply superb stuff, and as for Candice Bergen ....wow! very high on my list of top naval movies.

Take out the chase scene and the movie would have been a "STINKER".

I actually disagree with that. Plot was very simple, but complex ones are overrated. It was more style than substance, but it was one of those movies where that was the entire point...it captured that '60's laid-back cool' vibe perfectly.

Weakest part was any line uttered by Jacqueline Bisset. She plays an important part...need to show the renegade cop's softer side or he lacks depth...but her dialogue was badly written.

The chase scene, while awesome, was a bit too much of a set piece...almost seemed out of place. I rarely care about that while I'm watching the movie, as the lead-up to it, and that final breaking of tension when the hitman in the Charger stomps on the gas is just...yeah. I actually think the foot pursuit through the airport at the end is a better action sequence in the context of the movie.

There's also "Away All Boats" about a assault transport in the PTO. I've seen it a few times and it seems to get better with each viewing. The kamikaze attacks are pretty harrowing to watch as one would expect. I didn't realize Clint Eastwood was in it till the 3rd time I watched it.

Yep, there was also Le Mans (arguably the greatest racing movie ever), Papillon, The Hunter, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Getaway (Both of those last were remade - quite badly - recently), The Magnificent Seven, On Any Sunday (a documentary about motorcycle racing, and McQueen didn't act in it, he was one of the racers).

Terrence Steven McQueen was a much better actor than a lot of people give him credit for, and appeared in a lot of very good movies.
