View Full Version : Introducing a new Kaleu, and a question

Hi to all fellow Kaleuns on this forum, ( or should that be " Wie gehts " ? ). I share what appears to be a common addiction on here, namely the joy, pride, anticipation and sheer terror, ( sometimes ! ), of taking command of your boat, sailing out to unknown adventures, and known adversaries ! Doing our collective duty for the glory of the Fatherland. Then steering a course to bring our, ( usually battered and bent ) boat and crew back safely to port.
I have been playing SH111 for around 2 or 3 months now, having progressed from SH11, what a difference a dynamic campaign makes ! I have been using GWX 1.03 until very recently when i finished a career, and then donated and downloaded GWX 2. Great work and congrats all round to you guys on the GWX team. However, I have not progressed further than the naval academy in GWX 2 as yet. I hasten to add that this is by choice, due to not wanting to totally commit to a career yet until i have the game set up the way i would like.
I have downloaded and installed Commander, I think to the correct place. When the screen loads for SH111 it says" loaded by SH Commander," so I guess I've done that ok ? The thing that is troubling me is that there are a couple of mods that I would like to add for the time being, although I would not consider myself a complete newbie regarding the mechanics and tactics of SH111, I would neither count myself in the revered company of some of the highly experienced, and legendary Kaleuns on here.
I have downloaded JSGME, for the purpose of installing and uninstalling a couple of small mods. This sounds a great programme for this kind of thing. However this is where my ignorance and ineptitude with things computerish shows. ( I still regard an abacus with deep suspicion ! ). The notes say to install it to the root folder of the game, I took that to mean the SH111 folder in my documents, so i did, I now have a mods folder in there as promised. I also have one on my desktop ! Is this good or bad news ? I have tried to install a simple mod ie contact tails through JSGME, sadly to no avail. I realise the fault lies with me and something I have or have not done properly, I would appreciate and be grateful for anyone taking the time to point me in the right direction. But please, in layman's terms, I have only guessed at the meaning of " root folder " !
Thanks in anticipation, and also for taking the time to read this. BTW my os is windows xp

Welcome to SUBSIM

The root folder is actually your main SH3 Folder in your Program Files, so
ProgramFiles-Ubisoft-SilentHunter3. Extract JSGME there, run it once to create the Mods Folder and you are good to go. Check my sig for a link to a nice Illustrated Guide on how to use JSGME.

Good luck

Hi guys,
Thanks for the welcome to your forum, and thanks for the quick replies and advice for my self-inflicted problem. I do have a tendency to try to muddle through and sort things out myself, sometimes it works and I learn some useful things, other times it doesn't, spectacularly so ! This is one of those times i fear.
With installing and reinstalling JSGME, I have now 2 or 3 of them in various places, some of them in places I didn't know existed ! This has probably corrupted and confused the programme in no small way !
I think the probable best course of action is after work tomorrow, to do a complete reinstall of SH111 and GWX, then a read and re-read of your advice.
Thanks again guys

Cheers subvers4.:arrgh!:

Be extremely careful of adding mods on top of GWX. Though many function with no obvious defect, they break intended functions and/or detrimentally change very tight code tolerances... leaving you blissfully unaware.

It used to be that mods were made most commonly for SH3. Now it seems that most new mods are made for GWX.

User beware.;)

This guy is sunbathing naked on the beach with just his cap over his d**k when a women passed by and said "If you were a gentleman you'd lift your hat to a lady".

He replied "If you wasn't so fuc*ing ugly it would lift itself". ;)

Welcome aboard subvers4

Until you get a good feel for GWX there's a folder that gets created when you install GWX called MODS. You can see all these through the JSGME, those are all pretty much good to go without much worry. Generally ime as long as a mod is designed for/compatible with JSGME it doesn't have a negative impact on GWX (like adding new skins for your sub, its sooo much easier to change them through it than to directly copy the files into the folders leaving you no way to keep track of what you've got).

Ahoy again all.
An update on my amateurish attempts to play around with mods. Switched on the computer this evening, and for some reason clicked on the JSGME icon, lo and behold, there they are listed, all the mods that came with GWX 2 ! I have no idea how that happened, it was empty last night ! I tried one out, Captain America's officer icons, worked perfectly, quite liked it , in fact preferred it to the original. So, thankfully no need to go through the potentially traumatic ordeal of complete reinstalls ! :nope:
The only mods i can't use are the ones i tried to install into JSGME myself, I think it's quite obvious where the problem lies here ! Trying to run before i've learned to walk properly ! We all have to start somewhere I guess.
Anyway, thanks again for your friendly welcome to this forum, and for your good humour and patient advice in dealing with my query.
Vielen Dank, Kameraden.
