I only know that in the RN the black flag was an accepted pennant for submarines - while in the german navy it was unthinkeable - hence the anger of the germans when they were ordered to raise a black flag when they capitulating in 1945.
Royal Navy submarines have flown the JR since the 1st world war.The practice started after they were accused of being pirates and continues until this day.Have a look at my blog for a few articles on it.Traditionally a white flag is the flag of surrender, but I suppose at sea it looks rather like an RN ensign. The black flag left no such ambiguity.
Hi Linton, never heard of it. I think it's, no.
I think it must have been an Allied Mediterranean thing then Fish. The Poles and Greeks operated out of Malta with the RN.That is where the practice must have started with the Poles at least. How do the Dutch record victories with their submarines?

How do the Dutch record victories with their submarines? Broom stick on the Periscope. Thats where the US got the tradition for a "Clean Sweep" :know:
I've seen a Modern Dutch sub with a jolly rodger flying but I don't have a clue about WWII.
Whenever I think about subs with Jolly Rogers, I always think of the Conqueror :)

They most certainly did sir (once they escaped and came over to the UK). :yep:
I have photos somewhere in my collection but I am becoming increasingly angry and frustrated due to the fact I can't put my finger on them at the moment http://imgcash3.imageshack.us/img240/4669/slapheadrc6.gif
