View Full Version : SH3 Growing in Popularity?

In the last two weeks there seems to have been an increase in Subsim lurkers and we had quite an influx of registred Kaleuns reporting in.

Wonder is the same thing is happening at the SH4 Forum. Are submarine sims growing?

Maybe the uboat addon for SH4 has produced a few more players for SH3

Certainly seems to be a crop of new players in the forums
Always good to see for both SH3 and Subsim itself

It's because of the SH4, the players who wants to be German Kaleun in Atlantic buys SH3, and when they get the GWX to make gaming exprience better. They tell about this to friends, and so on...

Also its because the GWX-is well known, even on the site of the gaming newspaper I order has the GWX as download on the Downloads section.

Pretty sure it's for the subscribers only. I cant see why Kipparikalle would want to order any other gaming magazine than "Pelit" and that site has downloads for subscribers only. ;)

It is a mix of both games from what I see. A lot are showing up in the SH4 forums. Probably for the Uboat add on or perhaps they blew the dust of the SH4 game that was buggy outta the box and put on the shelf. Who knows, there are numberous reason for the influx.

I use it when check grid, where Bdu sends me

SH-3 GWX2.0 plays on lesser vid cards ?

That could be one reason.

To play SH4 modded or not at least a 7600gs NiVidia or equal ATI.

Maybe if you look at whats been released in terms of computer games in the last two years or so, folks just got tired of being treated like little kids.

IMO there has been precious little released on any format that would excite anyone under 13 years. At the same time if you look at the drivel being dished up nighlty on TV, eventually the more imaginative or adventurous will just get bored and see if there's anything more intellectually stimulating than endless cop/hospital shows and so called Reality TV

Its numbers, eventually some of those folks will filter down to SH3 or 4 and they will get interested because they will find an incredibly friendly, supportive and informative little community with an eye for detail and a love of history and one of the most constructive and gutsy modding communities any where

When you add all that together why wouldnt you play SH3 or SH4

Just my two cents worth, thanks for a great community

To play SH4 modded or not at least a 7600gs NiVidia or equal ATI. Playing SH4 with the addon with pent 2.4 / X800 pro graphics card / 1024mb ram , plays fine . I agree atm SH3 gwx2 is the best atlantic sim , but for how long ?

What did the average age of SH3 GWX players turn out to be according to the spot poll taken a while back? I'm sure it must have been about 35 - possibly older. If this is so, how does one account for a sudden surge of interest in subsim gaming amongst mature males?

How much publcity does this magnificent mod, GWX, actually receive? I first heard of it through Game Shadow, as I did "Real Total War", a superb "Rome Total War" mod devoted to historical accuracy.

As regards the Total War series, the Mediaeval Total War II engine has been modded by historical accuracy fans (Australians, I believe) to create "European Total War", wherein they have created, amongst others, the mammoth and bloody Schlagfest fought out at Boridino in 1812 between the self-styled Emperor of the French and the Imperial Russian Army.

This mod is a fantastic achievement and received publicity on Australian TV, so I am told. The problem is, that the numerous uniforms and minute historical details of the mod can cause the result to be very jerky when the fighting starts.

This is why I reckon that the GWX mod beats all super mods hands down: historical accuracy as far as is possible without necessitating big-horse computing power or forfeiting player enjoyment because of sluggish graphics.

And word has got round about this, hence, I believe, the recent upsurge in interest in this modified game.

I think that amongst other mods the schnellboot mod in particular is bringing a lot of new people in, those who are interested in a surface game rather than a sub game. I posted a message about it a few days back on the Akella PT-Boats forum and already it's had over 200 hits.

Well i can't speak for anybody else but I bought the game brand new. I just could not play it because of limitations of my old PC.

Now I have a new PC, new ram, 512 mb video card and a wide screen. (AMD Duo Core 960, 2 GB PC 3500, 800 Mhz Ram, 512 Mb Nvidia card)

I have been awaiting to play this for a while now.As a matter of fact, I just took it out of the original box after Christmas 2007.

So please pardon me if I'm happy just to play this version let alone the SH4.

Never underestimate the power of the bargain bin.
I loved SH1, but could never bring myself to pay $35 or more for a sim in the wrong ocean. I had been watching for SH4, but just don't have the hardware for it. When SHIII got below $20 on D2D that made it a much more attractive target.

I recently saw SH3 in a bargain bin for $9.99Cdn :yep:

When you upgrade your rig in the future be sure to get SH4. It is a great game, and with the add on now here and already being modded, in the not so distant future it will have something to offer to both the Pacific Captain and Atlantic Kaleun.

I was given a $25 dollar gift certificate for Christmas 2006 & in January '07 I saw SH3 on sale downtown for $19.99. So it ended up costing me about 5 bucks (bus fare over there and back). For $5 you can't lose :D & with all the excellent mods that have been released the game gets better all the time.
I don't think that I'll be getting SH4 though as the Pacific theatre doesn't hold any interest for me, even with the add-on.

I like SH3 GWX because it is the perfect distraction.
Engaging and thought provoking.

TV offers nothing: The one scripted show I liked was cancelled (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip), and the History Channel has disintegrated into one nonsense show after another. (In case you haven't heard the "facts": The Sherman tank is the greatest tank ever produced, all German forces are "fanatical" or "maniacal", all German officers are heel clicking marionettes, no other nation did any serious fighting other than the United States - who won the war singlehandedly, and U-boats "cruelly" stalk innocent merchants while Allied bombers "brave the skies" bombing "Nazi industry". Bah!)

SH3 is the perfect compliment to a good book. Cruise around at 128 / 512 while reading at the desk with the game headphones on... just keep an eye out from time to time for convoys, task forces, and listening for the dreaded "aircraft spotted!".

Once targets have been found the books away and it's down to business planning and executing the attack!

Perfect downtime.

Its the mods. Its a 3 year old game but the work people put into SH3 Commander, GWX, SteelSharks, POTD really add to the depth and variety. Each Mods has its own thing it does really well. GWX adds detail and religiously follows all the operations of WWII. POTD gives you large convoys with a wide variety of ships, SH3 Commander allows you to add more mods through JSGME and customize further. Otherwise this game would have staled like any other game you beat.

I used to watch quite a bit of TV and read a lot. Once computer sims got good I discovered that they offer something that neither books or TV can - interactivity. With books and TV you just get whatever the writer wants to give you. With computer games I get to have an impact on the outcome. That's the deal-maker for me.

As soon as I have to upgrade my box I'll be trying SH4. This little puddle between Europe and America is just no place for a submarine skipper.:ping:

Everytime i went to Best buy, or gamestop, i always saw copies of Silent hunter 4 ...EVERYTIME, it got to the pont where i sometimes picked up a copy and read the box, and thought, i have seen this game everytime and it looks somewhat interesting, might was well try it out...i got SH4, the graphics made it seem as if it were a slide show...bought SH3, and have been hooked since.

I didn't get the game initially because of the stupid anti-piracy software that wouldn't install if you had DVD-burning software on your machine. I don't like being told what software I can or can't have on my rig. I had SH3 when it first came out & quickly shelved it.

A couple months ago i was on a wwiiol OT forum and someone posted GWX2 screens. Several of us then started playing and i've told several others about it.

My personal experience...

At this point i don't have much interest in sh4. There are a few things that make sh3 great, the biggest of which is probably OLC's GUI. From my perception there isn't the opportunity for such a realistic experience in SH4.

Serious and mature games are dying breed, there is less and less of them.If you visit one of the "popular" games forums, by mistake, you will run into total ignorance ,"me first" attitude, insults and ridiculing each other.

Couple that with absolute lack of depth in all present "popular" games, Subsim is becoming oasis for friendly people that want some challenge. As such is more looked after.

There are presently only 2 forums . IMO, where you can have mature, friendly conversation and help, without getting interupted by someone whose general knowledge of vocabulary is limited to undermining text speech.

That would be Subsims and Europa Barbarorum (suprisingly considering from which game it derived)

my 2 cents at least...

Hey!

I have been interested ww2 for a pretty long time, and played IL2 and ww2 fps games alot. But somehow I hardly knew anything about the uboat warfare in ww2 when I bought Destroyer Command, mostly because I liked the look of warships and loved the thought of blasting ships to pieces on the open seas!

But when I had been playing DC for a while I started to get pissed on these german underwater vessels that kept sinking my merchants and was impossible to find and sink when they laid deep in the atlantic water.I had no clue what they were and how they worked!!?

So one day I stumbled over a game where you could actually take command over one of these mysterious, tubes of steel sneaking around under the water(SH3)!
And who would have known, here I am playing SH3, sneaking at convoys and loving the highly realistic simulator!
I'm 23.

So get get to the point, I think one of the reasons people might be joining these forums could be the recent release of games like Battlestations Midway, and other games like that, which somehow looks like it promises more "action" to the buyer. And then they see subs in the game and find them interesting and: "Insert the story of how I began playing SH3 here".

What a TOTAL WASTE of money that was - Battle Stations Midway. Total interest in that game lasted about 36 hours and it got uninstalled. Said to self - WTF was that about?

Another tied for 1st place as a money waster - Shells of Fury. Loved the game, but with no ability to save a game, it got marked for the recycle bin as another $20 down-the-tubes.

I live in both worlds - SH3 & SH4.
Tower PC is a brand new Quad-Core, 3 gig RAM, etc. Vista based. Never had a problem with SH4, graphics still amaze me. The enviroment is home based.

Laptop is Vista based, Dual Core, 2 gig RAM, has a girly or weenie graphics card. It has SH3 w/GWX 2.0. GWX graphics AMAZE me with SH3. Laptop/GWX 2.0 time is mainly in use at my get-away place in a rural area on a lake front property. Find it VERY relaxing to be sitting on the porch looking at the lake, meanwhile my laptop is on my picnic table with an intense attack going on in GWX 2.0 as the sun sets.

I try to give both games [Sh 3 & 4] equal time and enjoyment. I also try not to crazy with the MODs. By doing that, I find it keeps both games very stable. i.e. crash free.

I have been playing Silent Hunter since the first game when we would go on the CompuServe forums with the head designer (Carl?) and point out bugs and such. I think I emailed out the first patch to a bunch of folks who couldn't get it. Of course my first subsim was Aces of the Deep. Still have the manual and maps. Loved it.

SH2 was a deep disappointment. Canned missions?

SH3 looked great, but was unplayable on my older system so I shelved it.

I bought SH4 a few months ago when the price dropped down to 19.99 from 49.99 when it first came out and loved the game . . . still do!

I recently rediscovered my SH3 game and thought what the hey and installed it a few days ago. Love it. The patch cleared up the graphical sky glitch I was getting. As soon as I found out how to download GWX 2.0, I am sure I will love it even it more. While there seems more mouse clicking going to get what you want, I am sorry I missed it the first time around.

My favorites are still Aces of the Deep and Silent Hunter, however. SH had a nice clean interface.

In any event, I would imagine the recent price drop on SH4 might be a reason we are seeing more folks on the boards.

I just bought Battle Stations Midway, not sure if I like it yet, seems very arcadish to me..

I have never played the game. But I think this is the exact reason why people like to buy the game, because it is arcadish! And as I said in my earlier post, perhaps get an interest in submarines and want a pure sub simulator!? You got to start somewhere. May it be Pacific Storm, Battlestations Midway or Destroyer Command....
People like arcadish games, me to from time to time.....

Welcome aboard JackhammerJohn......It's an exciting period at the moment in sub simming terms with both SH3 and SH4 still going strong http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

Ive been looking for some new games or sims, but there just isn't anything out there I am interested in..
I thought about ship simulator, but that to seems arcadish to me,maybe this too is why others have flocked to the SH series so much.
The modders is what keeps me coming back, always something new to try.

SH-3 GWX2.0 plays on lesser vid cards ?

That could be one reason.

To play SH4 modded or not at least a 7600gs NiVidia or equal ATI.

Not true - I play both SH3 GWX 2.0 and SH4 (u-boot missions) on quite "old card"
GF 6600 and ... much better results (+ shorter loading time) are without saying on SH4 ! ;)

SH4 is really more demanding, at least for older laptops. On ATI X1400 SH4 is unplayable. I would need at least twice as fast graphic card. SH3 runs fine, there are only performance issues during explosions, or when I run into a big convoy and look through periscope.

Thanks, Jim! I even bought the bonus pack in the stores for SH3. I gotta find it and install it!

Also, I just picked up a mint copy of Avalon's Hill Submarine game. I always wanted as kid and now I got some board game pleasure coming my way.

Did my first MP game this last night and it was a blast!
