View Full Version : Hearts of Iron 2.. Arrg I suck at it.
Got this game a few weeks ago... its been taking forcing me away from Eve-online ever since...
Sooo fun and yet sooo annoying sometimes.
For an older game its fantastic!
Yesterday I continued with my Japanese 1936 scenario (Doomsday). I am in February '39 and I still have to conquer those low infrastructure and mountaineous western victory point provinces of the Chinese to be able to annex them.
The partisan activity over there is insane.
What nation do you play Rilder?
Usually jump around a bit, currently messing around with a Canada Campaign.. allows me to mess around without influencing too much.
Though usually I play a campaign then get mad and start a new one when I lose a battle.
My first nation to play was Argentina. I restarted from scratch numerous times, trying out different focuses on research, productions and so on. What I like about smaller nations is the reduced need to manage large stacks of armies and IC.
I only have to think of playing UK and having to manage all those remote depots and forces drives me mad already
Right so its Early 1942, Canadian troups have withdrew from the african coast after General Vernier (sp?) Judges that the battle is lost there, but he doesn't go home, he disembarks in Portugal, and after several short battles annexes them, Even with this small victory though, the allies are losing ground by the day, (and the Commiterm) Britain is in German Hands, giving Germany basicly a One Front war with the soviets.
Knowing the profits Hitler is reaping from Germany I draw up Plans for Operation Reclamation... The Liberation of the British Isles, hoping that Hitler had made a mystake and under garrisoned britain.
My Gamble payed off and less then 2 months after Landing on the South Shores of Britain the Entire place is back in there Rightfull owners. :D

Since I always start in 1936,my games get weird. Last time I played Germany I had Nationalist Spain as one of my allies. As soon as war started they attacked France...and conquered France before I was even done re-positioning my army after defeating Poland. I still can't figure out how that happened.
And in another game,England decided to Intervene in the USSR-Finland Winter War. Made things alot more interesting for Germany...lol

about weirdness..
In my current USA 1936 campaign I have 20 mechanized/armored corps, 6 marine divisions, 2 carrier taskforces and numerous planes standing by to invade wherever I feel I can take a nice chunk out of the axis...
All built up according to plan, just waiting for December 7 1941
However, it is now juli of 1942 and nothing much has happened, Japan has failed to conquer China, Germany took Poland but the allies did not declare war so Germany is just sort of sitting there and building nasty Panzer divisions, hell they even have a decent Navy by now...all the while Hungary is allied with Greece, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria since 1940 and fighting the Soviets, those Balkan countries are holding off the entire Red Army in the one province of Hungary that actually borders USSR
I am now not at war with anyone, nor can I declare war on anyone, they're all being too nice...I might have to change the US government to a totalitarian regime

I think the wildest game I've played as Germany is when I had Hungary,Rumania,Nationalist Spain,Bulgaria and believe it or not,Poland as allies. In late 1942 EVERYBODY attacked me,even though I was behaving myself and just working on techs. After that,I allied with Italy and Japan.
Since i had been sending all my allies techs they were in decent shape. Poland even managed to hold off the USSR long enough for me to send a large army to back them up.
Nationalist Spain immediately went after France,as did Italy, while Japan went nuts in the Pacific. For some reason the USA AI had kept the bulk of it's fleet in the Atlantic. The Japanese AI actually tried to invade Australia, but got beaten off.
The end result is that by the time the game ended (time ran out) I had taken part of the USSR and held off the Western Allies...though they did conquer Spain. I played a more defensive game, which is something I rarely do. As for the Japanese, they grabbed Vladivostok, the Phillipines,Wake,Midway and a host of other areas. The USA AI sent it's fleets into battle piecemeal and got chewed up by the Japanese Navy.

Seems possible, iirc mechanized infantry require only the second version of Motorized infantry.
Usually whenever I play USA I end up organizing a coup on japan and allying with them, at which case my new brosef and I declare war on Germany.

I thought about it but theres like no info on the mod, just a link to download it. Its like a game company realeasing a game called "Game" with no screenshots or anything just a white box with the word game on it.
TRP is good but IIRC primarily aimed at Germany, makes the game much harder, I couldn't break into the USSR come Barbarossa, that's for certain, but then again, I suck a fair bit at HOI2 too
Playing stock HOI2 (Arma, IIRC) now as the UK, history went south very early in the game when France DOW'd Germany, Poland DOW'd France, and the Soviet Union DOW'd Poland and Germany.
I've been spending most of the time building up my defence and kicking Mussolini out of Africa, it's quite amusing because as quickly as Germany is coming west, Russia is chewing its way west as well. We may well see the Reich in Portugal before long!
Well, better dig in because I have a feeling that it'll be cold war time sooner than anticipated...
Just finished my USA campaign, (well not so much as finished it as ran into a game crashing ctd that I can't get past)
Anyways.

I too suck at HoI 2, I'm playing as Canada right now and the people in my country must be thinking stuff like "WTF are they doing developing ICBMs when our infantry is in the stone age" or "WTF are they doing annexing countries in South America", I'm probably the leading country in terms of Nuclear Weapons, Tactical and Strategic Bombers, But most of my ground forces are still in the 1930s, I've been mostly staying out of WWII (Which hasn't ended yet, It's 1947) and starting my own little wars in the Caribbean and South America (I have no idea why, just wanted to bomb someone I guess...), So far I annexed Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Chile, Argentina (After a long and bloody war), Uruguay and Paraguay, I also "helped" the UK annex several other nations like Cuba and Ecuador (I think that was it), Damn freeloaders...
Sooo, Yeah, I suck at this too...

lol...my game is interesting....anyways, started as US in 1939 and used a trainer to get 1 day research and I modified some files to make all of the advanced stuff 1 day to build lol. By 1940, the US was geared for war. 1-3rd fleets in the pacific, with 5 forrestal carries, 10 montana BB's, and some CA and DD's to make 30 flortillas. 4-5th fleets had 10 CV's instead. 10 nuke sub fleets, 27 divisions of marines organized into 9 marine corps, and about 8 mech divisions and 9 heavy armored (m26 pershing) divisions. Also 3 strat bomb groups with 9 bomb wings (b36) and 3 escort (p47). 6 anti ship wings, 24 CAS wings, and 52 fighter wings (p80) lol......Annexed Japan in 1941 :)
For the west I had 27 mech divisions and 27 armor divisions with 3 strat bomb groups ("the mighty 8th", the 9th, and the 4th) same amout of CAS and fighter commands. Took north africa in 1941 and over ran all of italy in 10 days. Patton went loose in france with 9 pershing divisions and completely liberated it. Set of a line with germany and pushed them back at a rapid rate, finally causing WW2 to end. Annexed Italy and other parts of Europe. Never got to join the allies....just me and the philippines doing this **** :D Japan didnt join axis till thier capital was a small atoll in hte middle of nowhere....time to build up in europe to fight USSR in cold war
My my my, I haven't dug out my HoA in a long time! Annexing Japan is fun, but going Japan first, means Russia ends up almost in france. Oh, and can't forget the 1938 invasion of Mexico.
Now I'll have to play again. Where is that CD? Is there anywhere online that I can make a new purchase? Subsim maybe?

Well, I guess I'm much better now than I was then, I did manage to survive as TRP Czechoslovakia for 9 months against the Germans in that AAR down the page...
Started a grand campaign last night as the Finns from 1938->. All went well at first, had a plan for Winter War to fortify all sectors on the Soviet border. Plan worked just as I expected, the first attacks were stopped on all sectors and counter-attacks were ordered. Murmansk, Kola, Kem and whatever the sectors just east of Finland were named, fell one after another to my hands.
Only headache was Leningrad. With only 23 divisions to cover my borders, I could only spare 7 of them to the Leningrad front. The Soviets countered every attack with their combine land and air effort... If I'd just have few more divisions to circle them from behind... *sigh*
At around February, 1940, the situation had 'calmed', neither side were making any progress. "Good!", I though at first before realising that my troops are being attrited every week, so eventually they would break. I grabbed the phone and called to Mr. Churchill and offered to join the allies, which he agreed to. WOOOOT!!! 2 big naval groups from UK appeared near Murmansk and some bombers came to help me on the Leningrad front.
"Haha, this is going to be easy!", I muttered to myself as I ordered the 3rd and 5th armies to head down towards Leningrad.
YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED THE NEXT ****ING DAY!?!?!?! THE GOD****ING ******* GERMANS LANDED TO TURKU, TOOK HELSINKI AND SURROUNDED MY TROOPS IN VIIPURI!! **** THIS! I GO BACK PLAYING SUPER MARIO BROS. :damn::damn:
Lesson of the story? Well, the allies are wankers. :know:

I had an insanely fun game as Italy. My goal was to make Italy democratic and join the Allies. Right from the start I started adjusting my sliders to democratic, and within a couple years Mussolini was gone.
Of course, being nice and democratic didn't stop me from annexing Ethiopia and Albania. Say no to IC? NEVER! However, I did liberate Libya because they weren't worth the trouble. I refused to support Nationalist Spain, and as a result they got crushed by the Republicans. My only other move was to say no to the anti-Comintern Pact (Japan didn't get an offer).
Since I planned to play nice with Britain and France, I didn't need a navy because there was nobody else in the Med to deal with. So I focused all my research and production on ground forces, with a wee bit on air.
So the war starts as normal, but I sit around and bide my time. Germany crushed all in their path just like in real life, and there was no way I was going to take them on alone. At this point I was still neutral.
However, right around the time of Barbarossa the British suddenly invaded Europe through.... Croatia?!?!? I decided that this would be as good of a time as any to jump in, so I declared war and joined the Allies. I sent tons of forces into Albania while also pushing outwards in the Austrian Alps. Together with the Brits we caught the Germans with their pants down, and pretty soon their line was broken and we were steamrolling through the Balkans. I annexed Croatia, Bulgaria, and Romania in pretty quick succession.
Alas, the last of those three was a bridge too far. In my rush to conquer territory my units became stretched dangerously thin. The Germans regrouped and began to push me back. I fought on and eventually established a stable line through Romania, with Ploesti and Bucharest in my hands. It was VERY tenuous, but it held.
At least, it held for a little while. Eventually the Germans broke through the British lines around Kosovo and started moving towards the Adriatic. Suddenly my entire force in the Balkans was in danger of being cut off. I had no choice but to pull EVERYTHING back to the Adriatic coast. I lost almost all the territory I had gained, and my forces in the Alps were suddenly in trouble as well. I decided to kill two birds with one stone. I took my Balkan force, which was huge when it was all together, and fought my way up the Adriatic coast to Venice to reinforce my units defending there. It was surprisingly easy, but I lost everything in the Balkans. On the surface, the campaign was a total failure. However, it did take three Axis countries (and their divisions) out of the war, and the German advance in Barbarossa was stopped. I'd like to think that was due to the number of divisions they had to divert to fight me.
So I settled down along a three territory front in northern Italy, each defended by over twenty divsions. The Germans tried to break through a couple of times in Venice, but they never really came close to winning. My plan was to simply bide by time until either the Soviets or the British/Americans gave the Germans something else to worry about.
Eventually though, I got bored and decided to gamble a bit. I had been steadily building divisions, and I realized that if I pulled my three territory front back to a two territory front (Italy's original border), I could defend the front with fewer divisions and take the remainder elsewhere. I decided to launch another Balkan campaign, but this one would be much better planned than the original haphazard campaign.
My goals were simple - retake Albania and Bulgaria. I could control those countries with a 5 territory front, and I had 20 divisions to use. If I struck quickly, established a defensive line, and didn't reach beyond that, I felt I could hold those territories long-term.
I struck in mid-1943. It went exactly as planned, and my operation was soon complete. But as I was carrying it out, I noticed a major change on the map. The Soviets had broken the German line along the Baltic and were POURING eastwards! Suddenly my small operation became a desperate race against the Soviets to seize as much territory as possible from the crumbling Germans. I went on the offensive on every front, moving north from the Alps into Munich and regaining almost all the territory I had conquered in the initial Balkan campaign, plus Austria. Unfortunately, the Soviets beat me into Hungary. They also took the rest of Germany, then kept pushing west through the Low Countries and all of Occupied France. The Normandy Invasion never happened. The European war ended in late 1943.
Germany surrendered, and the Soviets liberated Norway, Hungary, Germany (DDR), Poland, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Luxembourg, and the bits of Austria, Romania, and Yugoslavia that they controlled. All were Stalinist (Stalinist Luxembourg!), but only the DDR became a puppet. I didn't have to liberate anybody since I was still technically at war with Japan. I had some partisan activity, but garissons with MP brigades solved that VERY quickly.
France, the Netherlands, and Belgium still had territories overseas, so the Soviet Union kept direct control of their European territories.
Meanwhile, the British and Americans dawdled in Asia. The American AI sucks, and they kept all their fleets in the Caribbean. The US invasions of Southern Vietnam and Hainan Island both stalled. Japan had annexed Nationalist China long ago. Eventually the Soviets invaded China, and conqered almost all of it down to Canton. Japan is still fighting on, but I think it's only a matter of time before they go. It's just a question of who invades them.
So it's 1952, and the Cold War is in full swing. The Soviets are overwhelmingly powerful, while I am the only free power remaining in Europe. The DDR has insane numbers of infantry divisions, and if World War III comes I'll get crushed pretty quickly if I don't get any outside help.

I think it also might have had something to do with the lack of a war in Africa. Since there were no Axis forces in Africa, all those divisions in Egypt were just sitting there with nothing to do.

That's likely, every time I can remember that the Balkans invasion happened was after the Axis were driven out of North Africa in 1940/41

I have read in many boards some threads about that HoI2 and begin to slowly become interested.
So some questions come to my mind as if i decided one day to buy this, it will be for solo play :
-is the AI any good to play with or do they randomly move their troops ? is it outrageously cheating or not playing by the same rules ?
-is the AI able to actually have some kind of diplomacy with the player or with other AI nations or is it affected by some mental issues, one day behaving as your best friend ever, the following declaring war on you like in a Civilization3 ?
-in case of a war, are your allied AI able to react as ally, are the enemy alliances able to act the same too ? is it possible to create a global strategy for an alliance of nations, or do every AI does their own things without a regards if it totally destroy the chances of the alliance they are part of ?
-i have read some years ago several concerns about amphibian assaults and AI that was not really able to conduct one, is it always the case (as i imagine in the west front in 1944 and pacific it becomes an important point) ?

1. The AI mostly follows the historical patterns, or possible alternate-history patterns. If the game starts becoming very ahistorical, the AI will do some strange things, but never anything that completely doesn't make sense
2. As I said, it mostly does what it did historically, for better or worse
3. The Allied AI will send you expeditionary forces and stuff like that, but it will mostly work towards achieving it's own goals (And those goals should be rather the same as yours...)
4. Given the amount of times I've seen Japan invaded (Not to mention Normandy, Italy, the Balkans and so forth...), I'd say they are able to conduct them
One note, unless you're playing as them, beware the Communists!
I thought if I left Stalin alone, he'd leave me alone while I took on the Yanks who had invaded my ally the UK (yeah, you read that right, by a small miracle I managed to coup the UK government and install Mosley)....WRONG!!
Sept 1942 the border rumbled to the sound of dozens upon dozens upon dozens of T-34s. I managed to slow their advance for a while but after they piled through the Balkans and flanked me through Austria and into Italy, well, it was all over, the Soviets smashed through southern Germany, into France, down to Spain and Portugal, into Italy and down into the Med, up through Finland, Sweden and Norway. I held out around Berlin, Cottbus (where my nuclear reactor was operational) for long enough to nuke the Russians twice (both on my own territory ) but it wasn't the war changer that I hoped it would be, and the Soviets shrugged off the radiation and kept coming :damn:
Ah well, next time Mr Stalin is being promoted to number one on the hitlist. :yep:

I have very high standards for AI, and I've been very pleased with HoI2's AI. There are a few niggles here and there, but on the whole the AI is fairly realistic, tough to beat, but still fair.
Working with your own allies can be tough, and sometimes your allies infuriate you. But they infuriate you in a realistic way. I was playing as the French, and I attacked Germany as soon as they struck Poland, hoping to catch them off guard. But Poland fell quickly, and Belgium and Holland wouldn't join me, so I got crushed. I was furious with Poland for not holding out, I was furious with Belgium and Holland for letting me get hung out to dry, and I was furious with the British for sitting back on their stupid little island and not helping my gallant forces as they got pummeled by wave after wave of Panzers. In other words, I felt the same way that the French probably would have felt had they attacked in 1939.
Joint operations are also difficult - you can't really coordinate actions well with your allies. In the Allied Italian game I talked about, by first Balkan campaign collapsed when the damn Brits didn't hold the line in Kosovo. I found it's best to have your own theater of operations.
What allies are really good for are resources and research. In the Italy game I didn't have enough resources to run my enlarged empire, but the Brits and Americans were very generous. Whenever I had a shortfall, they would cover it at no charge. They also gave me a ton of blueprints for free, which really speeds up research.
Overall, HoI2 is a very difficult game. I've never had my initial strategy work as planned. In some games I've just had to pull back, regroup, and try again, but other times I've had to play the whole game over again, using the lessons I learned.
The great part is that each game is very different. I've played two campaigns with the US so far, and I ended up with two different wars. In the first one the Germans built a strong navy and went ahead with Operation Sealion. I immediately joined the war and took all my (meager) land forces to try and save the British, but I got there too late. My attempt to re-invade Britain went disastrously wrong, and as I tried to pull out my big but obsolete fleet got hammered by a smaller but modern German fleet. So now I've got a lot of land forces but no transports, and no base in the Atlantic beyond Iceland. Meanwhile, I've been playing nice with the Japanese because I can't afford a two ocean war right now.
In my other US game I was attacked by Japan in February 1941, but they didn't start their Southeast Asia campaign, probably because they had completely conquered China and were busy trying to pacify it. So I'm busy in the Pacific, but I'm still at peace with Germany.

I saw some reports about it, but i don't think if HoI3 will be the game for me considering the time span, as HoI2+expansions cover 1936 to 1964 (how much i wished an expansion would open up to the eighties), while HoI3 is said to cover 1936 to 1948 "only".
HoI2 seems then currently more interesting to me as with more years covered it then opens more possibility in term of scenario, techs, etc...
Maybe once HoI3 will get hit by some expansions to enlarge the time span will render really HoI2 obsolete for me, at least if one of those expansions can cover the seventies and eighties, my favorite wargaming era.

Well, it looks like the AI aren't quite as intelligent as I thought. The Japanese AI I'm playing against violated the 3rd Commandment of Warfare: Thou Shalt Not fight a land war in Asia.
For those of you wondering, the 1st Commandment is Thou Shalt Not invade Sicily (from Thucydidies), and the 2nd Commandment is Thou Shalt Not invade Russia when winter is approaching.
As I said earlier, the Japanese attacked me (the US) in February 1941. At the time they were still fighting China. Their Southeast Asian campaign faltered from the start - they took Indochina and the Malay Peninsula (including Singapore), but I beat back their attempts to invade the Philippines.
In the meantime, the Chinese gave up the fight. That has happened in most of the games I've played, and it's been handled different ways. Once I saw Nationalist China become a Japanese puppet. I've also seen Japan give most of China back to the warlords, who all became Japanese puppets. However, in this game they went for total annexation of all of China.
Initially I was scared, since it meant Japan looked VERY strong. I got even more scared when they swarmed down from China into India and completely overran the British. The Japanese Empire was freaking huge.
But in their quest to conquer all of Asia, they completely forgot about me in the Pacific. In a desperate attempt to help my British allies, I launched a tentative invasion of the Japanese home islands. The idea was that the Japanese would have to divert forces back to defend their homeland, thus taking the pressure off the British.
However, when I arrived in Japan it quickly became clear that it was almost completely undefended. There were a few garrisons around, but I rolled over them without much trouble. What had begun as a tentative diversion became a total conquest of Japan proper. The Japanese counterattack never materialized, partly because I had sunk most of their transports while defending the Philippines, and partly because all of their infantry divisions were thousands of miles away.
So the Empire of Japan was now the Empire of China. It was a very big Empire of China that included Indochina, India, and Persia, but all of those were occupied territories that don't give much IC. Furthermore, their entire army had to cross all of Asia by foot to defend against my invasion of the mainland, so they couldn't put up much of a fight. After a slow slog out of Korea, I've basically rolled through China. Southeast Asia is up next.

The AI isn't bad, it just has it's priorities...
I started my first '36 grand campaign with Great Britain today (with latest Arma 1.3 beta patch applied) and I'm surprised how much stuff I could produce despite the huge -50% IC penalty from the start.
It's February '39 now and my Air Force is quite okay, haven't done much to the Navy yet (a new carrier task force with the necessary screening ships should be combat ready by the end of the year). Several combined armored/mot. infantry corps are in the make for the army.
As I haven't played the European Theatre in HOI2 much until now, I'm curious what will happen with Germany, Poland, France etc. on the continent and with Italy in the Med. and North Africa (they have lined up an army of about 11 divisions on my border for two years now). Will there be support events for when Germany DoWs Norway or will I have to get military access to them manually to fight the Germans in Scandinavia?
I haven't paid much attention to Japan's efforts in the Pacific area but they seem to be still busy with the war in China...

Lesson #1 of HoI2: You never have enough divisions. Lesson #2: Your enemy always has twice as many divisions as you think he does. Lesson #3: Your enemy's divisions are stronger than yours.
The only way to overcome those issues is overkill. In my current game I had so many divisions that I almost ran out of manpower as the US, and I've only succeeded because my enemy made a massive strategic blunder.
The Norwegians should join the Allies when/if Germany attacks them. That will give you military access. The same goes for the Low Countries. It's important to note that the Low Countries do NOT declare war until they're attacked, which means that you don't have military access to them in 1939. I found that out the hard way when I was playing as France.
I should point out that not all of Germany's invasions are inevitable. I know with Norway there are some events/choices that trigger the invasion. I'll let you find out what they are, but I will say that they mirror the events that caused Germany to invade in real life.
I had one game where Austria rejected the Anschluss, and Germany didn't attack them in response. That changed the game a lot, since it kept Germany out of the Balkans.

Bummer, I ripped my navy in the UK grand campaign. My newly built carrier force was sunk by the Kriegsmarine during a port strike mission and I obviously did not have enough cruisers to protect the carriers from the Bismarck and Tirpitz :damn:
The Reserve Fleet also was eradicated. So much for sinking the Kriegsmarine in port...
Ouch, what is your airforce like? :ping:
The Air Force is okay I would say. I managed to prevent an invasion in Norway (Germany dowed in late March and now it is July '40) after all. At the peak I had 2 stacks of TACs (3 units each) and 2 stacks of Fighters (2 units each) intercepting ships in the Skaggerak and 2 Submarine flotillas on anti-ship duty together with the remains of the Homefleet. The Germans once managed to land 2 divisions in an unoccupied province in southern Norway but my Air Force and Marine Corps bombed them back into the North Sea.
But now I need those forces in North Africa, especially the marines. I'm now pulling out my 10 Divisions of France back to the island and send some of them to Africa to fight the Italians.
In North Africa I have 2 combined arms corps (1 Armor + 2 mot. inf), an infantry corps with 2 divisions and an HQ unit. The Air Force has 1 Fighter stack and 1 TAC stack there.
Japan annexed Nat. China a few days ago and the US had the "gear up to war" event.

Where are your doctrines at? Land doctrines are a pain because they take so long to research, but you need them if you're going to win any land battles.
I'm pretty much up to date with the land doctrines, the most advanced I am with the air doctrines (I only build and research fighters, tactical bombers and escorts by the way).

I prefer CAS to tactical bombers, although in the British case I think Tacs might be better. CAS does more damage to enemy troops, but their range is very limited. Tacs can be effective in a wider range of missions and have better range, but they're not as good at interdiction/ground attack.
Another tip: If you and the Russians both survive into 1943/44, keep a VERY close eye on the eastern front. As soon as the Russians start gaining ground in the east, get your boys on the ground in France. Once Papa Stalin breaks the German line in the East, he'll be in Berlin, then Western Europe before you know it. If you're not careful, you'll end up with a Soviet-controlled France right across the Channel.
Yes, range and mission variety are the reasons I prefer building TAC over CAS aircraft. TACs can do everything that CAS and STRATs and Naval bombers can do, surely they are less specialised but I don't want to spend research and IC days on every bomber type.
I rarely play countries in Europe where the provinces are small, so there is even less sense in building ultra short range CAS planes which can't even fly missions past their airfield province (think of South America e.g.).

Right, I downloaded the 1914 mod again because I saw that they have a WIP fix for the AI problems (And a pretty decent explanation to why Germany failed to invade Belgium before). Fired up the 1914 campaign as Denmark to see how everything goes, and sure enough everybody invaded everybody else as August 4 hit. Everything went quite historically for a month and then things broke down, the western front degenerated into a very weird kind of stalemate with both sides driving each other ever deeper into each other's territory. The Russians managed to advance to a few steps from Berlin when they stopped, then moved to carve out a huge section of Austria-Hungary. By 1915 the French had reached the German Baltic coast only to be driven back all the way to Paris and the Russians ate up most of Hungary and the Austrian Balkans. In 1916 Germany overran France and caused her to surrender, then moved east and crushed the Russians, the war ended in early 1917.
I think what is mostly causing this is the fact that HoI2's combat system is more geared towards Blitzkrieg-style warfare where the defender's advantage is minimal, rather than what should be the case in WWI. So I dug up the files and started tweaking units and combat values in an attempt to make the combat slower and more bloody, then fired up one of the battle scenarios (The one that has Russia fighting Britain in 1909-1910 through Persia and Afghanistan) and tested it out. Results so far are rather impressive. Most battles, unless one side has an overwhelming advantage (Not a mere 2:1 or 3:1, maybe 6:1 or more), take at least a few days or a few weeks now. Since morale and organization are massively increased, battles incur a huge manpower loss. I've had a battle with 8 divisions attacking a well-entranched mountain position manned by 3 divisions which lasted over 3 months and at it's end one of my divisions was completely wiped out (evaporated during the battle) and most of the rest were down 30% strength.
One of the interesting things is that now that battles are a lot longer and more intensive, units gain experience very quickly, but because manpower losses in battles are so big, they lose that experience equally quickly as they're reinforced by rookie troops from the manpower pool.
I still need to tweak a lot of things, but perhaps I could make the 1914 mod more realistic and playable without having to wait who knows how long for them to fix it themselves.
I have the HoI2 series, but find I can get bogged down in the "Tech" stuff, never know which way I should go when it comes to researching different things.
Just wanted to ask you guys, have you ever tried "Making History Gold", Looks a little bit less intense with the "Tech" end of things, and have been thinking about trying it out. But thought I'd ask before I spent the money on it.

Coups As raptor said, but still you only get 5% chance with full-up spies. if you happen to have a minister that increases your odds, so much the better.
A slower tactic is to try to raise dissent in the target country and then coup. It improves the odds slightly but is far more timeconsuming, an added bonus to that tactic though: The target country will have spent a lot of IC getting rid of the dissent. so they haven't spent it building troops/planes/ships to make your life difficult.
I've had a few succesful coups, USSR, Germany and the US once, while playing either germany or the Soviets, and Japan once when playing UK (I think) but I find them generally not worth it because it hugely unbalances the game in your favor, or even turns it into silliness :-?

So, I just joined this blog site, I'm from Tijuana... México... and I'd like to get the hang of it before I post lots of stories about my wargoings (if you can say this)... I've played with Australia and been able to conquer Japan (annex), Italy (annex) and hold off on Germany, unfortunately played it on HOI2 and the end date is 1947, I kept playing with the Victory Message and couldn't conquer past Vichy France.. Germany had already taken most of USSR and no country is really helping me... I thing Mexico is the only country with Ground Units siembarged in Italy (for real, not just coz I'm mexican)... anyways... I've also played being Mexico, dedicated to complete 27 IC's to have a total of 46 and prepared for war, I invaded Japan, I still have time but we're getting close to 1947.. bummer... All of Japan Main Islands (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and the Ryukyu islands), I invaded with a total of 30 mexican marines and 2 HQ and won, I've also prepared for Land Battles and I currently have about 40 Infantries plus 2 more HQ (just for invasion), there are 37 Infantry Divs in Mexico for Defense and 1 HQ... a dream game... and I'm about to invade Italy's mainland... Sicily (Sicilia) has fallen already, but can't pass beyond yet (Org and Morale are two big factors of me not beeing able to advance (already at full Land Doctrines), I also have about 16 Infantries in Plymouth, I think I want to oinvade Brest and try and take over France... the only thing I hate about this game is that even though I'm an allied, I really don't get that much support, there are no allied troops anywhere in the lands I've conquered, there are plnty Air Divisions, but no ground units... AI my a.. OK, I'm also playing as Netherlands, this time I decided to continue with the Maginot Line al the way to the Northern Sea and I'm impressed that thanks to my succesful defense of my country, Germany has been unsuccesful on taking Belgium or France, in fact is just a matter of time b4 we start an offensive on German soil... I'm confident we can win, with out any help from the UK or USA... I've played with Germany and conquered Russia and all of Europe, really playing Germany is not a big challenge... nor being the USSR, however being the US is quite the challenge as you depend on ships as well as being the UK, specially coz you must first prepare for defense and then counterattack... playing Italy is fun, I've been able to conquer all of the Balkans and Africa, bu the the time runs out... w/Japan I've conquered all of India and the Far East (Siam and China) as well as part of Russia, I've invaded the US through Canada and conquered the US, for some reason the US only has Garrisons Inland and makes it a vulnerable and Easy Target, also took Mexico and all the way to Argentina, I had a harder time conquering Bolivia than other countries due to their VP distribution, Brazil in fact is really Easy... so far this is the end of my story, I hope I can comeback and tell you more sotries of good and bad games... btw... I haven't been able to defend Poland, for some reason I just can't, I'd even tried being the UK send them all of my new forces only to fail... will keep trying... so thanks for reading all of this and hope you can share more stoies and if you want interact sometime

Unless you're interested in modding or don't like buying games online, it would probably be better to get Arsenal of Democracy rather than HoI2, a much improved fan-created version of the game.
As to which is better, that wholly depends. HoI3 is a very different sort of game to HoI2.
Hearts of Iron 3 is much more complicated when it comes to warfare. The base unit is a brigade rather than a division, so you have many more units to control and you have a very complex supply system that can make fighting in low-infrastructure areas a real pain (As it was in real life). Other than that, Hearts of Iron 3 is a lot more dynamic; in HoI2 the war will almost nearly always start on the historical date and proceed to it's different stages in different on the historical date and in the historical manner. HOI3 will have things happening based on how the game progresses with very few scripted events that determine when or how something happens.
HoI3 still has some bugs (Not nearly as many whiners on the forums will have you believe), but the 1.4 patch, which is already in beta, is looking to squash the rest of these.

I bought Arsenal of Democracy - and never could get into it.
I mean - I went through the tutorials, it makes sense - but the economic model is HOSED.
I tried playing the game the first time as the US.... and was lacking "rare materials" - aka rubber. OK, just gotta hit up other countries to trade with me for it.... but only one country in the entire world had a surplus - and I could only trade for .1 from them.... That didn't help at ALL.
OK - tried again - this time my resources were in great shape - except for money..... I even cancelled all the production of units to save dough - NOPE - my cash flow wouldn't rise no matter what. I modified the sliders on production - but nothing ever worked to increase my cash flow. The ONLY thing I did was spend $32 dollars on research - and 10 on spies. 3 months in - my money is gone. And this is after agreeing to trade pacts with various nations for money - they got excess metal and energy from me.
Read the forums and it looked like everyone was complaining that germany was overpowered. Ok - try that...
You gotta be kidding me... its 1936, military forces are almost non-existant (which I don't have an issue with though its ahistorical) - but the economy is running a deficit in energy, metal, oil AND money....
How the heck are you supposed to build a juggernaught - when your economy is so screwed up? I mean I can see using the economy to force a rapid buildup and then conflict to gain more resources - but when you run out of resources before you can get a tank of the assembly line.....
Either the economic model it entirely borked in this game - or there is something I am missing that wasn't covered in the tutorials (I even replayed them). Advice is welcome. There is a cool game here - I just can't get to it because of this screwy economy implementation.

I've only just started playing but as far as I can tell... build more factories!

Cash is based off of excess consumer goods, at least in the other HoI games.
I haven't played AoD, but in HoI2 I have never had too much of a problem with resources or money while playing a major power, at least not in the pre-war years...
What difficulty are you playing on?
CaptainHaplo
03-29-10, 06:26 AM
I am playing on Very Easy difficulty since I am just starting out.
As for building more factories - unless I misunderstand the tutorials and the manual, building factories would make the problem worse, since each factory (producing 1 IC) requires energy, metal, and rubber to operate. Thus, more factories = more demand of resources I don't have.
If I am wrong, and factories CREATE these goods, then someone please correct me, as I can just build a load of industry at the start. But if they consume resources, its going to crash me even harder....
I did see where surplus consumer goods will translate into money - but adjusting the slider never seemed to change my money situation though. Perhaps it has to go through a full day of time before it can update your cash flow?
Raptor1
03-29-10, 06:34 AM
Generally, things update at the end of every day, so it's a safe bet to wait a day before ruling out something as not working.
Factories won't create new resources, they are extracted automatically from provinces.
Camaero
03-29-10, 05:02 PM
Oops, yeah my mistake. Factories DO help you produce more consumer goods and therefore bring in more money correct?
I'm playing AOD as Germany and I just took Poland... my resources have been ok but it's very tough balancing between everything. As far as oil and rare mats go, I've done fine by leaving the trading process on automatic. Japan has been nice enough to send me free trade offers on several occasions to help with my oil levels when it goes into the red. I've been building a lot of factories but also oil refineries and blah blah to balance it out.
I'm curious if you have been letting the AI set up those crucial trades for you?
It's funny how I always thought that if *I* was in control of Germany when Hitler was, and I was.. ya know... an insane **** head... I could have conquered the world by waiting a few more years to build up my navy, develop nukes, and blah blah blah... but damn! I started in 1936 and by the time 1939 rolled around I could NOT wait anymore... just too excited to try my hand at world domination and I invaded poor Poland. It was quite fun. I told Russia I would let them have their share... but when the time came to give up those provinces, I told them ruskies to piss off. They promised they wouldn't forget my act of betrayal... meh.
I don't even know how to group my fighters or bombers yet... so my doom is probably only a matter of time. Awesome game so far though... I really like how you are able to make historical decisions or try things another way via random popups... all with their own pros and cons.

What was wrong with Russian infantry in real life?
EDIT:
Oh
Or will they be able to hold me off?
There was in fact nothing wrong with the Russian infantry (In many cases they fought better than the Germans), it was their aweful leadership and doctrine early in the war. This is simulated by the Great Purge event which kills off many of their best commanders and their doctrine-researching tech teams, but if you wait too long they will recover.

Phew...well...the major part of the North African campaign is pretty much over now. It took a LOT of hard work to dislodge the British, and Ethiopia was sacrificed in the effort along with the forces which were regrettably left behind there. In Spain Franco battles against the British tides which flow from Gibraltar like the rabid monkeys which spawn there, Hitler meanwhile is quiet...too late...he's planning something I'm sure. I just hope that when me and Spain do join the Axis, he doesn't send too many forces into Spain to help Franco and bugger up his chances at Barbarossa...

You can move units into the Qattara Depression from Alexandria? That's new to me...
Even so, if it's unaccessable from everywhere else, you got technical isolation even without taking it.
@TF - On medium difficulty, they don't (Not sure about higher difficulties). Morale is the value that effects reorganization and some doctrine paths improve it more than others. How's your doctrine research?
German Spearhead doctrine has the highest organization, but I believe in the late stages of the game the Grand Battle Plan doctrine becomes superior in terms of morale (At least for Infantry). Of course, nothing beats Human Wave for morale (At the expense of some other obvious factors :O:).
Speaking of organisation and morale, it looks as though my game has come to an unexpected halt. With the British in charge of most of southern Spain, the Italians in charge of Malta and the British in charge of Syria I am unable to move my forces any further forward due to lack of supply.
The only thing I can do now is just sit tight and wait for either the Germans to beat off the British and then get steamrollered by the Soviets or for the British to steamroller me.
Raptor1
04-25-10, 10:13 AM
No supply? Why? You should be able to drop off supplies in North Africa from Italy unless the British are raiding your convoys heavily...
Unless you don't have supplies in general, but you can always buy those off Germany temporarily, can't you?
I have plenty of supplies, the odd ship is being lost in convoys from time to time but nothing serious, I have plenty of oil, I haven't seen a British ship, short of the odd transport travel east of Gibraltar in a long time. Unless they're sneaking in subs through the Suez and basing them in Syria, but the subs and ships I have raiding convoys down the coast of Egypt haven't seen any British subs...in fact none of my ships have seen British subs that I've been made aware of.
I honestly don't know what's causing it, the only thing I can put it down to is submarines but I haven't seen any. My units in Alexandria are all drawing supply from Tripoli but my armour unit and several infantry units are stating that they're out of oil and none of them seem to be regaining organisation or morale, they keep flickering between +6 recover and -1. :damn:
Huh...and now it's fine, but the Brits have just annihilated my only unit in Spain. Franco...you're an idiot. :damn:
With that rather strange occurrence dealt with, we've crossed the Suez and are ploughing into Palestine. Our only armour unit was regrettably isolated and destroyed on a daring push into Jerusalem but our infantry can manage without it against what must be the dying dregs of the British forces.
The Royal Navy clobbered the Regina Marina in a battle that saw the Trento and some other ships lost. The Nazis have invaded the Soviet Union and seem to be doing about historically, Finland on the other hand was overrun almost immediately and is now a Soviet puppet.
I've taken military control of Spain, and now face the extremely difficult task of dislodging what must be most of the British army from Spanish territory. :damn:

You probably beat everyone in terms of organization, but the British might beat you in Morale if they went through the right paths.
I absolutely despise fighting in Central Africa, it's generally a good idea there to throw strategy out of the window and just slug it out with superior numbers...

I might well do that, but I want to keep some reserves in case the US decides that even though I'm not affiliated with the Nazis (still not in the Axis for some reason but not complaining because hopefully the Soviets won't steamroller me so quickly if Hitler screws up) that I'm a valid target, which considering our relations are at -200 is quite possible. The battle for Spain continues, not entirely successfully for the Italio-Spanish alliance (Spalian?), Barbarossa continues semi-successfully for the Nazis, although the UK, as well as creating a complete mess in Spain, has also somehow managed to invade and occupy part of Norway.
Take a look at the UKs IC!!! :damn: No wonder they have so many bloody troops!! Well, that and all the Commonwealth lackeys they have running around for them.
The current plan for Spain is, when my transport fleet has been rebuilt, divert some forces away from the Middle Eastern campaign and invade on the relatively undefended beaches in the south of Spain and try to cut their supply lines, although after their recent capture of Madrid...it's debatable how well such a mission will go.

The Re rise of the Soviet Union!
Ever since 2003 the political standpoint has been changeing, And the army has been expanding. The first major actions of the solviet union after the army build up was to start regaining lost land form post WW2. We quickly took control of Ukraine, and are now starting to crack down on the populace. All rebels will be killed.

China realiseing there is no way to win. put in its last ditch effort. Nuclear war.
Late May, china launched its entire storage of nukes on the US,and india. On June first, being than now we were at thread, we were given the key to all to seventy ICBMs... Loaded with nukes, We prepared for nuclear war.
We launched at key targets, but the US, wanting revenge launched back, Hitting every region. and causeing Completly distroying china. Now a nuclear wasteland.
This was a truly awsome sight seeing all the nukes hit.
I, think ill reload my last save... I kind of screwed up, being that I got nuked abit also...

No, I never Retreated, They Supprised me, while my armys were in Trying to take out Northern Italy. Declared war, and soon around 40 divisions started pouring over the Rhine..
We are doing are best to stop, or buy areselfs time. The lack of men In the south from diverging them north allowed them to break through and Flank us, They are now trying to cut us off.
In the west, the battle is turning into a stalemate, But now, things are changeing, We are pushing back over the Rhine. and trying to distroy all of their Flanking units. Trying to stop their push to Berlin.

Those Stupid French Thought they could have a Quick Victory. But their rush to try to get Berlin, Was Their downfall. Hundreds of men were Killed when we surrounded a pocket of french troops south of Berlin. Now a long and bloody war to regain my land in the south has started. The only thing keeping the French from being Distroyed is Romania, which they Liberated from me. Im guessing they gave them those troops, and they are being supplyed by them.
In the west, It has gone WW1 style, and Is just a huge stalemate. The front Hasnt moved for months, tho we did push accrost the Rhine.

After We Crushed The french in the East, We quickly moved West. Pushing into Italy, and surrounding the last of the franch in Rome.
But more Important was the Late Spring/ Summer Offensive Into France. With the french In bad condition, It was prime time to attack. after Stoping a British Invasion In Denmark, We Quickly Started Pushing West, And eventualy Started a move to Counter The French in the north, by cutting there supply. We soon captured Paris, and then started to Crush Them as we did in the East. Soon The french, Who had most of their army north (guess to try to counter attack and circle around my flank or something) were encircled. Leaving there south open for attacking.
Great Comeback, For a country that looked Dead awhile back. (BTW, Im playing on Hard, With aggressive AI. IMO, this is quite a accomplishment for me, being that I was about to give up.)

I'm playing the World War I mod at the moment; I deleted all my savegames and began a new campaign under "The Imperial Zenith" (which starts in 1897). The current date is January 3, 1916. The time is 2000 hours. This is the stage:
http://i27.tinypic.com/plk4m.jpg
And these are the players (for my Head of Government, I originally appointed Count von Waldersee to crush the Socialists following my 1899 decision to sack Hohenloe and support anti-Socialist legislation, but I had to dismiss him after he had become a warmongerer against the Entente, favoring von Bethmann-Holweg to replace him- he offers some nice diplomatic bonuses):

France was defeated exactly a year ago. I abandoned the Schlieffen Plan and instead invaded both the Netherlands and Belgium at the same time, to avoid the former stabbing me in the back. I have taken all their territory in Europe. They're now forced to reside in Oceania and the Pacific.
Although I was not able to secure Paris by Christmas, due to the winter weather slowing down the progress of my troops, the battle was won on December 17, 1914. By January 3, 1915, they had successfully entered the capitol under the supervision of Field Marshal Erich von Falkenhayn. In a matter of weeks, we pushed them to La Rochelle, Bergerac, Toulouse, Saint Etienne, Chalon-sur-Saone, Besancon. The Italians had pushed on Toulouse and Nice, eventually making it to Lyon, but the French were able to push them back to the original borders. The Spanish are what made them give up in the end; they came up from the south and managed to secure all their provinces on the west and southwest coasts. Succinctly, the French surrendered and left the Entente. I have not removed my forces from France yet, as I intend to invade them sometime in the future (probably after I invade and annex Switzerland, as its provinces of Bern and Geneva are key to securing their border with Italy, and after I beef up my severely thinned forces in Africa) and finish them.
The Swiss have as of yet not joined a side; however, I am considering raising some divisions of mountaineers to invade and annex them, for the reasons previously mentioned.
I have stonewall'd the United Kingdom on the coasts of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and in the occupied territories' coasts of Russia, as well as my native German provinces' coasts. They have been unable to bomb me, as I have researched static flak and have built gun emplacements all around not only on the coastlines, but the cities of Paris, Berlin, Brussels, and Amsterdam. They have been unable to launch any sea invasions as a result of my stationed troops defending the coasts. (I give each brigade 1 infantry division with no attachments, 1 infantry division with a machine gun attachment, 1 infantry division with an early gas attachment, and 1 division with a heavy artillery attachment). They were able to invade and take Sweden, my ally, and had tried to move into Finland to support the Russians, who are trying to take Leningrad, but I have built trenches along the front with them, and my generals are experienced enough that there is no way they will be able to break through the line without taking some serious casualties.
http://i32.tinypic.com/2h5qxoy.jpg
I am OWNING Russia (thanks to Sweden, who the Brits have invaded and unfortunately annexed at this point, as mentioned previously. (Earlier, they took all of Finland, which the Russians have since taken back, and Leningrad along with most of the north up to the gates of Moscow; their sacrifice was noble.). I have taken up their positions since then and have begun improving the infrastructure of the captured Russian provinces behind me; it's vital for the supply lines, if my troops expect to hold their positions. Moscow is also in our hands, and I'm moving in to capture their new capitol of Archangelsk. Despite the bitterly terrible winter conditions, my troops have been able to hold. They have dug in as best as they can, and I am trying to capture as much territory as I can before February comes (which always seems particularly bad in terms of weather for me; Russia sucks). Their lines, although my men have been spread thin, are well defended and are far more experienced and well-organized than the Russians are. The Tsar has been unable to rally his men and establish a line of defense. Russia is doomed. It's just going to take a long time to either secure all of their territory to annex them or draft up a "bitter peace" treaty.
http://i32.tinypic.com/2mbn09.jpg
(Staraya Russa belonged to the Swedes previously, but now that they've been annexed, it's been returned to Russia. I need to send a cavalry division there to capture it for Germany.)

http://i27.tinypic.com/inessk.jpg
The Central Powers have definitely won the Great War.
http://i28.tinypic.com/2prw5qa.jpg
As a bonus, here's the situation in the Balkans (not much has been done with the Serbians by any of my allies, oddly enough):
http://i27.tinypic.com/65veix.jpg
And Africa (as you can see, the Italians have done quite well for themselves; the UK's getting its ass kicked):
http://i31.tinypic.com/t883n6.jpg
I was originally allied with Persia, but the Russians annexed them (the Brits got a slice of their territory, too, but the Ottomans have bogged down, and the Brits have no change of breaking their line). Afghanistan has agreed to support me against the British in India in a pop-up event. The Japanese aren't doing much at all. The United States is very friendly towards me, not so much towards the Entente. Which, this is a good thing. Maybe they'll take Canada? Who can say. I'll just play on to see what happens. Only cheat used was the "No Fog" cheat for the screenshots. As for the gross amount of resources, I'm not the only one. I checked in on the United Kingdom, and they have nearly as much as I do. Glitch is what I'm guessing. Although I do have an absurd number of trade agreements and a lot of territories under my control.
I plan on stabbing all of my allies in the back in the future, and also I am planning to attempt to take over the WORLD. Wish me luck lol.
