Hi.
First time poster here.
I just ordered my copy of SH3 on Friday and am looking forward to getting it like a little boy waiting for Christmas morning to get here. I can't wait.
I have been(and still am) a WWII buff since I was 12 or so. When I was in my late teens, early 20's, submarine warfare always held a special place and I enjoyed reading about it quite a lot. My step-dad had a copy of the old Silent Service computer game which I played on a Commodore 64 with a crappy monitor, but it was the best thing around at the time and I loved it.
Unfortuneately, I kinda drifted away from interest in submarine warfare due to demands of my job, getting married and raising kids, although I have found time to fit in study of other aspects of WWII.
Now, I'm 43 with a wife and 2 kids, and a puppy :-? . Last week though, I was looking through my books and came across Edward Beach's "Run Silent, Run Deep" and started reading it. The fires started burning in my blood about submarine warfare. Of course I began wondering about what kind of computer games were out there now and discovered SH3 and SH4.
I've read all the reviews, discovered this forum and decided that I have to get this game. I've been looking at some of the videos and screen shots and it looks incredible. All I can say is WOW..we've come a long way from Silent Service.
I was scared of some of the reviews on SH4 and how buggy it could be, so I decided to get SH3 and give it a try.
So... here I am, anxiously awaiting my copy of the game and joining your ranks. I'm sure it will be an enjoyable ride.
Sorry for the rambling.
One more thing:
I've played online poker for about 4 years and am a member of a couple of forums. Sometimes, people on those forums can be quite snotty to noobs when they ask stupid questions.
I've been lurking here for the past week and reading a fair amount of posts and I haven't seen any of that type of behavior here. It's very refreshing. Everyone here seems very friendly and willing to help. :D

We tend to keel-haul people who do that. We have plenty of smart people here who will be glad to answer any of your questions. Be sure to check out the sticky threads and read all the noob guides. Plenty of good stuffage there
We were all noobs (some of us still are).
I would recommend playing SH-3 stock (with all the patches) first to get your feet wet, and then check out some of the mods. They really can add a lot to the game.
Good luck and as soon as your game arrives, we expect proper damage reports damn it! :arrgh!:

Add my "Very Welcome Aboaard". A couple of things to always remember with these Sub games:
You can always get help here!
The most experienced players are here and willing to help with even the basic questions.
Unlike it's predecesor's SHIII has a very good 'Save Game' module. Save often and learn from your mistakes.
Don't leave your scope up too long and use the run silent option when ready to attack.
Again, welcome aboard!

Welcome aboard Sharkbit. I'm a noob here also, and I can tell you that the folks here are a great bunch. As it has been suggested, try the game stock and patched first and then try out th mods. The one that I like the most is GWX 2.0. Those folks put alot of time and effort into it and it's incredible to play.
And in the noob fashion, I have a question. I've noticed the letters DiD or DID in some folks sigs and was wondering what it was.

DiD is referred to Dead is Dead which means players like myself will start another career when a commander is killed due to depth charges, mines, etc instead of starting over from a previous save point.

  DID is a dead is dead campaign.
dont try it
when i first bought the game with my mother (im 12 years old) i was worrid that all you do is draw a map, go to places and shoot torpedos.
i was wrong. i am a keyboard lover and i love the keyboard.
play stock sh3 for a few weeks and dont bother installing the patches.
chances are that your copy already has the patches on it.
if you get the THATS HOT version of it you will get all the patches.
in the menu screen in the corner there is a number. if it says 1.4 then you wont need to install anything.
if it says something different install the 1.4 patch, available on silenthunter iii. com

Thanks for the info Blue_Ninja63. I though it might be some sort of mod folks had, and I've been looking for it for in the mod section. Funny thing is more often than not that's what I do when I die. I start over from scratch, even the to the point of doing the sub school all over again.

Wow!
Thanks for the welcome from all of you. I was pleasently suprised to see so many responses to my OP.
I haven't had a chance to look at the forum all weekend for a couple of reasons:
1. Busy with kids and wife.
2. SH3 came in the mail on Saturday!!!!!!!!!:D :D :D :D
I spent some time loading it and playing a little bit when I had time, trying to learn the ropes. I've barely scratched the surface. I'm working on the tutorials now. Unfortuneately, I haven't had a chance to blow anything up. Maybe later in the week after work and picking the kids up from school. To hell with their homework :p . (Just kidding!).
I got some questions that I'll post in the future in different threads.
Again, thanks for the welcome!:D

I find it ironic that I picked the S-boat as my class to start with (prob use it indefinitly). I didn't learn until later that alot of new skippers cut their teeth on S-boats.
