I am having a problem with pausing a game and going to my desktop...everytime I do this it seems that I get this msg. and I get a CTD. This is really annoying especially if you are well into a patrol and have not saved in awhile....Has anyone else noticed this problem?? I dont know if it is a result of the mods I have enabled or what......Rick

I've never had that problem, no. In fact, I frequently pause games and go to my desktop. Hang on though; I'm positive someone will shortly be around and have some idea how to help.

I have had problems with pausing and going to desktop with this and other games. Having the same resolution for game and desktop has solved most issues.

Hi Slick Rick,
I want to understand your problem very clearly in order to help you. Are you pausing the game and then deliberately going to your desktop to do something there, or when you pause the game is it dropping you to the desktop and giving you the message Silent Hunter III has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Also, what set up are you using for Silent Hunter III: Stock, stock w/ mods, GWX 1.03, 2.0 etc and exactly what mods.
I believe I know what might be happening and can help you fix it as I had a similar situation. I just need the details above so I don't steer you in the wrong direction.
Sincerely,
Slick Rick

Ok, it sounds like the problem I used to have and I solved it by using a program called End it all 2. Because every computer has background programs running, one or more of these is conflicting with SH3.
End it all 2 is an application you use to shut down unnecessary programs. When you run End it all 2 you choose which processes to close, kill, or protect. It is a simple yet very powerful program so choose close for most apps and if they can't be closed then select kill. The description of the process makes it very clear which should be closed, killed, or protected..when in doubt protect.
There is also FSautostart which is the same type of program but gives you the ability to restart processes previously stopped to bring your computer back to its original state.
I'm most familiar with End it all 2 as I've used it for more than 3 yrs without problems on my Windows XP system. I just run it once before I load a game to gain all resources I can and never have to run it again unless I reboot the computer.
Either of these utilities is available at my site under downloads. Note: Do not run these two programs together use one or the other only. Try each one out and compare to find the one that suits you best.
Read the Help files to get familiar with these programs.

Used to happen to me all the time on my old rig
Never on the new one
Of course the specs of the new one are far better than the old
Maybe a conflict
Maybe the system hasnt enough resources
Either way closing unused programs will help
How many memory do you have ?

I had the same problem before upgrading my RAM.
If that's not an option, try FSautostart (as Blue_Ninja suggested) or another similar programme to kill anything you don't need in the background.
