Is it just me or is radar tracking just about as nifty as it gets? I love it when the convoy gets close enough so you can see were each escort is and how the columns are set. Nothing like poking it out of the water for a quick sweep:D Hehe, they never saw me coming:rock:

And do I ever miss that. I didn't realize how much of my standard operating procedure was built around the radar until I went to the Indian Ocean and got a mission to intercept a convoy. The American boats were Ferrari's to the U-Boat's Model A Fords.

It is a great tool RR and yes, you miss the thing if you do not have it. When RFB 1.5 hits the net I plan on a 1941 career start in the S class. I will man the bridge with aluminum foil on my head in hopes it will act like radar:smug:

Just one thing I wish the game radar suffers, breakdown, weather issue and detect land masses. For the most part the darn thing was not the most reliable. Secondly weather could and did affect performance. It also detected land mass. In game you can pick up ships that are on the other side of a hill in a cove. :damn: Oh well, maybe down the road one of the talented can work on that.

I must still be quite the noob at this game. I never even thought about sticking the mast just above the water to get a radar fix.

Oh yes! Many fleet boat skippers did just that! About 40 feet is enough to get your most of periscope shears out of the water, while keeping the rest of the boat submerged.

Some may think the fleet boat conning towers are ugly... i say function, is a form of beauty all of its own!

Thankfully there are alternative ways to model in reliability issues. One is by having the radarman's efficiency rating affect his ability to report contacts. The other is the Report Probability setting (in one of the SIM files). I think for RFB I have it set to 90% (which means there's a 10% chance the contact won't be picked up).

But yeah, random breakdowns and the inability to pick up contacts behind a land mass would be nice.

Hmmm, I might be able to do something about that. What sort of malfunction were people thinking? Radar image scrolling up, like an old TV, or image just flickering on and off, or perhaps just have the set refuse to turn on?

All of them Nisgeis! But not all at the same time and not very frequently please. :)

Maybe the damage control slots could be activated to effect a repair. The repair time being dependant on the abilities and specialities of the crew members placed into the damage control team.

Don't be insulting.

Fleet boats are more like some big, snarling American muscle car.:D

Radar has been my best friend! Although,as some have said, beakdowns and missed contacts would add more realism.

My radar suffers breakdowns all the time. (at least that is what I tell myself when I forget to turn the dern thing on after I surface... )

Swdw has a cool way to handle radar issues the game does not offer. He will use dice and in doing so, what is rolled determines the breakdown and for how long. Just need to stick to what the dice shows when thrown.

WHEN IS RFB 1.5 GOING TO BE RELEASED..

I can not say for sure as there is modding going on like mad. Many parts have to come together to make the whole. There are many parts to the whole that will make this great. Currently, RFB 1.4 is being rolled into working order for the 1.5 patch. Part of that whole that RFB is to be concerns RSRD and Lurkers work. I can however state that Swdw has just about all RFB 1.4 working and rolled into RFB 1.5. Minor tweaks and adjustments being made. LukeFF has been modding things that I thought not possible. Then there is some beta testing. I'm not going into what Lurker is up to with Operation Monson. That is his puppy and it is looking very good:yep:

Tell you what, I'm like you...I hope soon as I'm playing stock game with some texture changes like the HUD in my screen shot. RFB with RSRD is much more fun and challenging.

Didn't the radar used to pick up land masses in v1.2? I could have swore that I saw huge "blobs" on my radar screen when I first installed the game last summer.

I've got the add-on but have yet to install it because I was waiting on the mods to catch up. While I was doing that I decided to give RFB a go and now I'm addicted so I still haven't installed the add-on. RFB and RSRD surely makes for a challenging ride around the Pacific.:arrgh!:

Heck yeah, radar depth is the shiznit!! When I'm playing "dodge a plane" on the Japanese coast I'll come to periscope depth and run a visual sweep on low power and then pop the Gato class boat up to 35-40 feet depth and warm-up the old tubes and make a good radar sweep and see whats up there. Then surface and run standard or full speed to continue the patrol.

But, nothing will make your stomach sink and your drawstring pucker like going to periscope depth taking a look and then going to radar depth and getting no report and then surfacing and having your lookout say "Aircraft spoted, close range, we're under attack" all because you forgot to turn the radar on.:o

I always start my careers in Dec 41. Once I get the SJ radar it is too easy. I have to be really stupid to get sunk. Maybe I`m a defensive skipper, but I always return to port with a decent tonnage and my boat undamaged.

As of 1.5 the SJ radar automatically turns on when the antenna breaks the surface.
