Hello, Mates. I am brand new to Gaming, and Silent Hunter IV specifically. My Kids bought SH4 for me, for Christmas. I have it patched, up to 1.4. My location is crawling with retired sailors, but I have yet to find ONE that plays ANY of these games…except one Air Corps guy [I know, USAF…but some things die slowly], and I don’t know a thing about airplanes. He knows nothing of ships. For that matter I’ve never crossed the brow of a sub. So I’ll try to learn SH4 independently. I may need help along the way. I have registered with SUBSIM / SimHQ / and Ubisoft…forums. I understand there are dire consequences for asking a question already talked about in the vast number of postings, but I do know how to search and will do my darnedest to find my own answers. If I can’t, or don’t understand, I’ll ask; please be forgiving… I will have tried!

Thanks, Bill

Welcome aboard, Mister Bill!

You've managed to find the web's friendliest and most helpful forum! :yep: Although virtually anything you might need help with has been addressed before, don't hesitate to ask, once you've browsed through some old threads. More often than not, the folk around here will fight with one another in an effort to help you out first! So, welcome to Subsim, and welcome to SH4...its a fantastic game.

Good hunting,
Howler :arrgh!:

Lots of good information found here:

This will help you a lot, especially once you start digging into the higher realism settings.

You might want to play stock for a bit, perhaps even on easier settings, before jumping in with the super-mods like Trigger Maru or Real Fleet Boat, which make the game much harder (and more interesting!!!) to play. Or, jump right in and go for it!

This is one forum where we don't bite. However, one of us sends evil airplanes to bomb you at periscope depth, where you can have no clue why you suddenly find yourself inhaling salt water. Once you spend some time here you'll find that SUBSIM is a different kind of place than any other forum, where rabies is kept to a minimum, cheerfulness is the rule sometimes, and and with the exception of myself, Ducimus, LukeFF, peabody, Dowly and that AVGWarhawk guy, we're reasonable people. :arrgh!:

Hey, we love submarines, how normal can you expect us to be? Come aboard. We'll be doing the crush depth test today and we virtually promise you'll come back in one piece. Take 'er deep!

Welcome aboard! If one is new at sub sims, then the learning curve can indeed be a little steep. Rest assured theres plenty of helpful folks to help you out, both here and the ubi forums.

I'll give it a good shot. My only experience with subs is from looking at The Scope, over the shoulder of The Sound Man!

Welcome aboard Bill - grab a spot of rum and enjoy! Fire questions whenever, and your likely to get 4 links with all the answers - and a few direct answers as well - don't mind any grumpiness and enjoy SH4 however ya like. Don't hesitate to ask - we all learn stuff regardless of how much we think we know.
