You like what you like. Simple really.
However, get ready for a sh*t load of replies saying:
"SH4 is better than SH3 ever was at the same time"
"Both are equally good, play both"
"Mods make the game a lot better"
Etc etc......blah blah.:shifty:
Is there some kind of hidden forum reward for 'sitting on the fence' in this matter?

You do realise that SHIV is in way better shape than SHIII was when it was released? Besides, in their own way, they are both good games. Wait for a while and you'll see the mods kick in and make the game better. :smug:

Rofl! That'd mean 20yrs in the galley and another 20yrs of washing Neal's car. :rotfl:
EDIT: Oh and I'd have to cure cancer, then Neal MIGHT give me some deserted outpost to look after. :D
The only positive thing you can construe from that post is that its an ode to how good GWX and the work that went into SH3. I for one still play both and I beg in equal amounts that 'this facet' was included in 'that game' and so on.
personally the atmosphere in SH3 is something i would like in SH4 and i think that is sheerly a personal thing (thats shared commonly :D ) remember SH3 before the tool mods? OUCH!

Very true. I personally hate war games with bright colors. Tho, of course it's the Pacific, but still, even during the storms it looks too colorful. Let's take for example Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers series. Everything you see have been gone through 50%-75% de-saturating filter and it works. The places in the movies look like cold, dirty and sad.

Starlion-Don't give up on SH4 yet. By your posting, you indicate you've only played it for a day. Have you added the Run Silent Run Deep and Trigger Maru Mods? Those two mods improve the experience considerably. Also, remember that the War in the Atlantic and War in the Pacific are different. That doesn't mean that SH4 is inferior, it just means that it is modeling a different war.

Post-processing filter anyone? It isn't in SH4 for nothing you know
edit: Nvm, I just saw your post at the SH4 mods forum

I predict you'll purchase it sooner rather than later http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif
OK we have had this very same discussion here lots of times, and in the end the result is also always the same: Some people like it, some don't, each has his own reasons. So please stop trashing SH4, SH3 or any other game, if you didn't like it you have the right to do so -you payed for it- and maybe somewhen you change your mind or not.
That's all folks....
personnaly i'll purchased it even if i don't play it for the reason numbered above

I still enjoy 1985's Silent Service. So I doubt I will be so disapointed by SHIV, whenever I get my hands on it.
Unless somebody is going to tell me Silent Service is a better game?

World War Two was a big war fought in a lot of different geography. I remember when playing tank minatures there was a lot of theater preference with the participants. Some prefered the grim austerity of the eastern front. Some, the shimmering deserts of Libya and Egypt. Some the great Allied landings and liberation in the west. It doesn't surprise that the same thing happens at sea with the subs.
I just feel lucky that I like both the Atlantic and the Pacific. :-j

With SH4 retailing so cheaply compared to its MSRP of $49.99 when it was first released, for those interested, it's worth a shot just to check it out.
Some of the modders have gotten burned out or bored with SH3 while others are simply intrigued with new opportunities presented by modding SH4 and its Pacific u-boat campaigns add-on (It's too small to really call it an expansion).
There will still be others left to carry on in their stead, at least for a time, but all things must end and that comes very swiftly indeed with computer games when their popularity is typically just a couple of years before fading away.
A thriving mod community can grant a temporary stay on that end but five years is the longest I've ever seen any game last before being winnowed down to just a core of die-hard fans.
My system barely meets the specs to even run SH4 and I very much doubt that situation will change anytime soon.
Besides, I like the whole "Das Bootiness" of SH3 and the war for the Atlantic has a certain quality akin to the sagas of the old Viking eddas. The lone island of the Bretons standing against the barbarian might of the Teutons, and all that. Very mythic, old-world stuff.
If it weren't for SH3, I'd probably be flying with the 8th Air Force over Europe, flying formation with the other B-17s.

I don't think that you wasted money by buying SH4 + addon. In worst case scenario , you won't find any fun till GWX for SH4 comes out and at that time i doubt that pricing will be different then now.
I can understand that you can't find your scene or fun in Fleetboat, for one you are not underdog that is having tougher and tougher time as years advance.I found PTO easy, and i tried all mods there available.
But thats not stopping me from hoping that it will get better, while still having fun, because it can only get better.
SH4 has huge moding potential , bigger then SH3 , and will shine soon.Look at it as investment for the future.

Unless something that rivals GWX comes out for SH4, I don't see myself playing it.
I might get it to have a look, as I'll probably get a lot of different games / simulations in the next few years.
But right now, as with a select few other games I've encountered in my career, I will be playing this one 5 years from now.
I had a pretty slick machine 5 years ago when I got it, but now my P4 478 2.4 isn't compatible with the newest motherboards. My RAM was only 1 GB (Only! Ha. My computing started on a 386 overclocked to 486). My graphics card has to be AGP, and I am stuck trying to track down SD RAM to upgrade it.
But for GWX I've gone out of the way to do it. New graphics card, more RAM, I've even ripped off the side casing of my computer and placed a 2" wide, 12" blade desk fan at the side to keep it cool during use.
[By the way; anyone stuck with an older machine like me that wants to beef up performance on the cheap - try Ebay. I've got three 1GB P133 SD RAM sticks on the way for $80!]
Hopefully in the next year or two they release the hard code for SH III it will unlock even more possibilities.
What I'd really like to see is an Ubisoft expansion of the Battle of the Atlantic / SH III using the same SH III engine (so we all don't need a Cray to run it); just extremely fine tuned AI, units, events, historical accuracy, etc.
If something as suberb as GWX can be produced by individuals on their own time, I'd like to see what the people who came up with the hard code can do given a corporate budget / man-hours.
In the perfect world, the folks at Ubisoft would already have their heads out of their asses and into the history books researching... and they would be starting with GWX as the base.
Long story short: When it comes to submarine simulation, unless something absolutely ground-breaking comes along, I'll be sticking with SH III GWX.

I bought SH4 when it's arrived but my rig can't play it good, so I let it be.
Now I have better rig (AMD 5000+ X2, 3GB RAM, GF8600GT) and week ago installed again SH3/GWX2/S3cmdr and SH4 with U-Boat addon.
There are some who likes mother and some who likes dotter... :yep:
But what about if likes both  :smug:

I like the concept of SH4. Heck, I think we all grew up on movies/games of US subs.
My biggest problem with SH4 is the interface.
It may be that I am so used to SH3 interfaces (and I am), but I have truly tried with SH4 and keep stumbling.
After many years/decades/centuries of practice, I have manual targeting down pat in SH3. Would not consider playing SH3 without manual targeting.
However in SH4, I have a hard time sinking anything. Every manual targeting step seems to take so much longer in SH4 than with SH3. The only explanation is the interface. Now each step does not take all that long, but when you have to set up quickly or your are under stress, I find the targeting interfaces of SH4 to be awkward.
In SH3, everything seems to fly. Even using OLC's wheel of frustration, manual targeting seems quicker and more intuitive.
I will keep going back to SH4. I hope it is truly a matter of getting used to the new interface. That is really my only significant problem with the game.
