View Full Version : Star ratings

Just a comment about the star rating. I've seen some get one star but until last night I had never recieved any ratings.
The reason I bring this up is that I think positive ratings are fine, they are encouraging, but this click a button and run and hide does no good whatever!
These are the facts, I posted a link to a Mission I just completed and spent a lot of time on. If you don't like the mission, I have NO problem with that. But this person gave me a "bah" (lowest possible) rating on a mission he/she never played. The time between when I posted and when the star appeared, it would be IMPOSSIBLE to download the mission, install it and play it. The star appears minutes after the post. (And it's a four day mission) I think this is an abuse of the rating system. If you have any comments, feel free to make them, good or bad but be honest, but no comment just a star. This gives everyone the impression that the mission was garbage when you never even played it. Just click a star and run and hide, no comment or reason.
So, I deleted the post because one person told eveyone it was garbage. If you don't like add-on missions then just move on and ignore it, or make a comment, don't hide behind your keyboard.
That would be like me posting a "Bah!" rating on TM or RSRD when I've never even played them. If it's a thread I'm not interested in or doesn't apply, I just go to the next one I don't post a bad rating just because it doesn't apply to me.
Just my 2 cents on the rating system.

Sorry, I couldn't help it. I had to give this thread a 5 star rating.
I hardly see the stars, and if I notice them, I dont care if it's 1 or 5 stars. I read the thread and make up my own opinion.

I never think about rateing a thread. And I read alot of good ones since being here.
Esspecially when alot of members try to help a member with a problem.
All the members that are always there to help deserve a BIG star IMHO

I understand what you are saying, what I am complaining about is the abuse. It doen't bother me if anyone likes or dislikes my comments or missions. But to give a garbage rating to a mission you've never even played is what I have a problem with.
It just gives the people that have nothing better to do to go around and rate stuff they know nothing about and that way they don't have to justify any comments, because they don't make any. They just click "Bah!" and hide behind their keyboard. Meanwhile people that have worked hard on something for the community get kicked in the butt with no explaination. I am sure several people would not even bother to download the mission because some jerk said it was garbage by a "Bah!" vote and I know that person never even played it!
Many in this community have given me help when I need it and this is a way I can attempt to "pay back" because I don't know how to MOD but I can write missions.

Agreed.
I never do like star ratings on messageboards. Ive seen them degenerate into popularity contests all too often.

Peabody,
I never would've known about your mission without the "bah" rating...thus prompting this thread. I'll go check it out! Thanks for your hard work!

It's in the Mission designer's forum, I deleted the one in this forum. Silent Giant. Hope you like it. There isn't much traffic in that forum that's why I posted here.

I'm with Dowly and TedHealy. I kind of knew the stars were there, but when I started reading I had to look around the page to find them. I have never rated a thread, and have no idea what threads I've started have been rated.
I think the whole thing is silly, except maybe to mark threads you think might be of special importance to others. Even then I wouldn't do it.
Silly!

As I've commented the star is not what bothers me, I would ignore it too except that it was a mission I made for the anyone in the community that likes them and he slammed it and I know he never even played it. If you download a mission of mine and tell me it is the biggest piece of crap you have ever seen, I am ok with that. You didn't like it, and I accept that, no problem. But I do have a problem with people that just give a garbage rating to something they have never seen. I am not trying to make a big issue out of it, I just don't understand someone rating something they have never seen.

is for the one who posted it, not for you:up:. Too bad you can't click on the star and see who the Bah! is...:rock:The stars are kind of pointless anyway. Thanks for posting the missionl. I'll check it out. Not too many missions get posted and I know it's mighty fussy work.

I remember we briefly had a forum feature where you could rate members with a series of lighted green squares. The more squares I guess the cooler they were. Thankfully, that one got discarded pretty quick. :arrgh!:

Thanks Rockin, I know some like the missions some don't, they prefer the Career. I don't know how to MOD but I have figured out quite a bit of the mission editor, so I thought I would contribute.
And if you notice there are 3 single stars on this one page, and this post went from 5 stars to 3, so there must have been another. That's four "I want to insult you but I don't want you to know who I am, cause I'm a jerk!!" I don't see the point, if you don't like a thread, click back and read another one.

I vaugely remember this. I dont remember if it was on this forum or another. If such a system were in place here, im quite sure my rating would be somewhere in the somewhere in the vacinity of sidewalk gum scrapings in stature. :rotfl:
Although I noticed the system early on, I started ignoring them completely after a few days when it was obvious the resulting accumulation of stars had little to do with the content. If the rating system went away, I wouldn't notice. Like others, I read a thread based on:
1) If it's a question, is it something I know enough to help with, or something I need help with.
2) The conversation interests me and has a lot of thoughtful posts.
My evaluations are based on READING the thread 1st, then deciding. I will admit a lame or offensive thread title will more likely than not discourage me from reading it.
