A Russian nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine has been found on patrol in Lake Bala, Wales. It has been impounded and the crew of 55 taken into custody.
The Typhoon class sub, armed with 20 ballistic missiles, is one of the world’s biggest. It was intended to operate under the Arctic ice pack. Russia has previously said these vessels would be discarded in the near future.
The US has provided funding for their scrapping, but recent statements indicate some or all may be retained in service in secret locations, although Wales was not thought to be in the picture.
An Admiralty spokesman said: “How it got in Lake Bala is hard to imagine. It could have come by road as a heavy load, or constructed on site at Bala by night, or dropped by parachute. On the other hand, it could just be an hallucination, in view of today’s date.”
