Apparently there's to be free rail travel for a month for veterans and serving members. http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2008/03/26/via-dnd.html

Via Rail: PLEASE TRY OUR SERVICES! Please like it enough that you'll come back!

GUYS! We still exist! Just because we charge the same as the bus companies but have more inconvenient schedules doesn't mean we're no good!

C'MON! WE GOT MICROWAVED HOT DOGS!

Seriously, this is such a blatant publicity stun, it's not even smirk worthy. But hey, someone's getting free travel out of it!

I agree.....but I wish the same gesture could be made here in the UK.

Aye, but your trains never get anywhere!

The trains in the UK probably have a modicum of efficiency. If you want to do anything in Canada except travel between two major cities, the train's useless - The stations are out of the way and the price and travel times compare to greyhound. And outside of the Windsor-Quebec city axis, you're better off taking the plane, since there's probably a single train per day at a ridiculous hour.

The service doesn't make a difference, and IMHO the comfort difference isn't worth the extra wait. I wish we had a more efficient pax train system, but I'm not sure that's even realistic in a country of this size (Except for freight, obviously)
