After the wholesale banning of smoking in public places, the move would be the latest assault on smokers in Britain. The plans are part of a drive to try and stop children getting access to cigarettes.

And what about chocolate at the supermarket checkout? Are they going to do anything about that? No they are not, as for this silly idea of placing fags under the counter what a joke, "Just one minute sir/madam." And the rest of us have to stand there while the shop assistant farts about digging out the brand this person wants. I don't see top shelf soft porn tucked away out of sight no sir, in fact it's in your face and some newsagents have two shelfs full of the stuff. The whole idea of getting fags under the counter is just a dumb idea which will not change a thing.

The government always knows what is good for you!!!! Here in the US I can not enjoy a nice trans-fat loaded sandwich when I eat out. I have to do it at home behind closed doors. I'm glad the government is looking out for my well being.

Its a ridiculous idea. If cigarettes are tucked under the counter, then how is the person going to see if their brand is there or not?
I mean, I once went into a shop looking for 10 Mayfair Menthols in Superking size. I looked at the display... I couldn't see the brand I wanted... therefore... I didn't bother to ask. Just paid for my bread and milk and left. Simple.
If the cigarettes were under the counter... I'd ave had to ask, the shopkeeper would have had to look... and the people behind me would be getting bored... silly silly stupid idea.
What are they going to do to the alcohol... put that in a safe with a combination? Alcohol is a much bigger threat to society than smoking is.

I'm all for the campaign against selling to the under aged (actually ensorced prosecutions myself)......and wholeheartedly agree with your remarks/observations about pornographic mags :yep:

They just need to have a seperate counter for smokers, they tend to do that here in Australia. The ony problem is they man it by having it attached to the express lanes, so that a cashier has to go an serve them while everyone else just has to stew over it!

Here in the UK fags is slang for cigarettes. ;)
