Welcome aboard kaleun
-Targeting
You can specify manuar or auto targeting in the realism options screen. Before starting a mission click "realism settings" (or something like that).
With manual targeting you'l have to: identify the target, estimate speed, range and AOB by yourself. It's a bit tricky, but practise makes perfect.
A great AOB won't give you a good shot by itself. You have to be aware of other things to, like the distance (in my opinion best distance to fire is between 1000 and 300m) and what torpedo you're using and whether you are using magnetic ir impact trigger.
Before a mission in campaign check the availlable torps and their specs to deside wich ones to use. you can check this forum about threads for "newbies"
and remember. PRACTISE PRACTISE PRACTISE

-single mission 2
Bad weather is a challenge.
You can use the periscope but it's a bit harder
In high weaves you can't use the deck gun and flaks.

-night missions or ports?
what cool things do you mean?

-ramming
about that you simply have to be more carefull

more missions for SH3

you can find missions and some cool mods here:

Good luck and good hunting kaleun

You enable manual or autotargeting when you load the mission or campaign.

**Please note the following examples are from the "Grey Wolves Expansion" (GWX) add-on, which changes some of the appearance but not the underlying function of these screens.

First, select "Change Realism" when you select your Single Mission or are about to begin your campaign.

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u113/Pablo_001/Missionimage.jpg

When you have the options selection screen, make sure the "Manual Targeting System" and "No Weapons Officer Assistance" boxes are not selected.

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u113/Pablo_001/Optionsimage.jpg

These will allow the game to do all the targeting work for you - just lock on your target and order the torpedoes to be launched. Please bear in mind, though, that even computer-controlled aiming is not foolproof, so there are some things you can to do help yourself:
Try to launch torpedoes when the Gyroangle (as shown in the periscope and UZO displays) is near 000 (say, from 350 to 010)
If you shoot torpedo salvos, keep the salvos very narrow (maybe 2-3 degrees at most).
Remain undetected. Ships or convoys that detect you will accelerate to maximum speed and begin zig-zagging radically, which will disrupt your targeting solutions and will likely result in torpedoes missing their target. There are a lot of other things, but that will do for starters.

-single mission 2

after finally winning the 1st,,took a while,,lol,,,I cant use periscope in the high waves,,so do I assume this is a deck gun only mission? ??
Which is "Single Mission 2"? Are you referring to the second Naval Academy missions, which is "Naval Artillery"? If so, then it is a deck gun mission only.

-night missions or ports?

when do I see any of these cool things? havent yet... When you are in a campaign, your missions will sometimes begin in daylight and sometimes at night. It seems to be fairly random as far as I can tell.

-ramming

seems I get rammed alot,,,does happen to you guys,,,,? I get up, can aim a few and let em go, but then I get rammed before a crash dive,,,,maaan I sukk,,,,hahahahaha

?? You may want to try attacking from further away and from outside the ships' paths, and to keep aware of ships other than your target: an escort may have spotted you while you were drooling over your target, and be coming back to clobber you.

-SH4

anyone tell me if SH4 is better or worse than SH3...and some reasons why? thinking of getting??? It is certainly different, but whether it is "better" or "worse" seems a matter of opinion and personal taste. There are mods for each game that, I think most people agree, have done a lot to improve each of the original products, so your best bet is probably to go to the SubSim mod forums for each game to see what mods are out there and how they have changed each game.

-links for newbies?

finally found a link for the comm manual(and still dont understand how to manual or auto aim,,,but looking for other info links please?
For good historical information on U-boats I would start at http://www.uboat.net

For manual targeting I would first check out Paul "Wazoo" Wasserman's Manual Plotting and Targeting Tutorial, here (http://www.paulwasserman.net/SHIII/).

There is also a thread for new players here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=283828#post283828).

:) Subsim has a Mission Designer's Forum, here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=198).

The GWX "supermod" has a number of new missions, both historical and hypothetical, which can be downloaded as part of GWX from the GWX home page (http://gwx.mysite.orange.co.uk/)

Hope this helps!

-meant single mission 2,,,,already finished academy well..seems so wavy I cant use perisope to find targets for torps, as I see no deck guns in waves,,,lol

ports? anyone? where are those ..campaign only, or in single missions too??

version: I have 1.4,,should I(can I ) patch further,,heard a 1.4 b exists?

GWX mod 2.0- do I (CAN I) put it on version 1.4? and do just install all the bin files offered and go?

saving: how do I save? which key? and in single missions is this possible or just campaign? see load,,but no save key?
and yea, playing on easy, so realism is at 0%, so I will keep playing and getting better Im sure,,,

thnx so much

Welcome to subsim!

As for you question: 1.4 is the last patch for SH3.
And you can only install GWX on a fresh install with the 1.4 patch!

For saving you need to hit the escape "Esc" key and klick save or save and leave in the menu! You can save in Campaign and single missions!
There is no quick save key if that's what you were looking for!:hmm:

But a bit of warning! Saving is risky! Sh3 has some bugs when it comes to saving!

So to avoid those you must follow a few rules:

Never save while submerged!
Never save while near convoys or in harbors.
Never save near scripted units/events!

Otherwise your might bugger up your save.

See you around!:ping:

-meant single mission 2,,,,already finished academy well..seems so wavy I cant use perisope to find targets for torps, as I see no deck guns in waves,,,lol What is the name of "Single Mission 2" - is it "Bismarck"? If so, then you may want to submerge and use your hydrophones to listen for the sounds of enemy ships. When you hear them you can set your course in that direction - I suggest you remain submerged, though....

heres a few new ones:

ports? anyone? where are those ..campaign only, or in single missions too?? There are many ports, and they available in campaigns and in single missions. Your best bet is to look at your navigation map to see where they are.

version: I have 1.4,,should I(can I ) patch further,,heard a 1.4 b exists?V1.4b does exist. You can find it here (http://www.silent-hunteriii.com/uk/updates.php). You probably have V1.4b installed already, but it can't hurt to verify that you have the final release.

GWX mod 2.0- do I (CAN I) put it on version 1.4? and do just install all the bin files offered and go?GWX must be installed after you have patched to V1.4b. The GWX installer (included in the downloads) will extract the content of the .bin files and install it into the appropriate folders. Your best bet is to download the GWX Manual (available online here (http://mysite.orange.co.uk/manual/GWX/GWX_Manual_V2.04.pdf)) first and then follow the instructions in the chapter on "Getting Started."

saving: how do I save? which key? and in single missions is this possible or just campaign? see load,,but no save key?The "<ESC>" key will prompt you to "Save", "Continue", or "Save and Exit." Myxale is correct regarding some "issues" Silent Hunter III (SH3) has with save games

and who's kaleun? lol "Kaleun" and "Kaleu" are abbreviations for the rank of Kapitänleutnant, which corresponds roughly to the US naval rank of Lieutenant. Most U-boat commanders held this rank, so people on this forum will occasionally address eachother with that honorific.

thanks again gents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm getting this, and yea, passed bismarck now, on to 3rd mission, and learning 'the ropes, and to be patient!"

finally, one question remains,,,mine does say version "1.4"

how do I know if its 1.4b...? I bought the online version from D2D...or question is: if patched, does it then display "1.4b"

if so, Im just 1.4

??

thnx again for all the pointers !

Generally 1.4 and 1.4b are the same, If your copy of SH3 did not need a separate patch to get it from 1.0 to 1.4 you cna be fairly sure you have version 1.4b

Good hunting!
