I've always been curious how many people here nave actually served in the navy or military. I like to study geography, demographics, etc. So, I thought to myself; this sounds like a good time to post a "poll:hmm: ".

If you served in the military, what did you do?

Where is the option for the currently serving?:)

Retired Air Force. Would have liked being in the Navy (come from a naval family) but I don't think I could have handled the lack of privacy onboard. I am one of those guys that needs to get away and spend some time alone. That is difficult on a Sub. :yep:

I have spent plenty of time at sea, but I have never seen a ocean.

Been on a sub - once - and left as soon as I could. Those guys have a big pair. I get nervous if there is not at least the hypothetical possibility of walkiung home when the fighting is over.

Did 4 years of war service with a CIA owned airline (Air America)
Sailed on sailboats in various parts of the world. Was shipwrecked off the East African Coast. Was in the US Cost Guard Auxiliary (Flotilla Commander).
Don't know which button to push for this poll:roll: need Bernard to help me, :rotfl: :rotfl:

Just an old slow southern boy from Texas joined up at 17 served on USS Helena CA75 radarman put her out of commission in San Diego 32nd street Navy base after a year on board.

My real dream had always been to serve on submarines, ran into a Navy chaplin at the YMCA that opened that door.

Reported aboard the USS Salmon SS 572 diesel boat as a radarman and had to switch to sonarman in the same week that the USS Thresher SSN 593 sank on a test run.

Served two great years onboard with Admiral Nitmiz himself awarding our boat and crew with the fifth Gold "E" for excellance.

Made a North Pac with spooks to moniter Russian missile test in November 63 when President Kenendy died ... we thought we were going to war for sure just because of that ... wouldn't you?

Reported aboard USS Ethan Allen SSBN 608 blue crew 1966 for three patrols, test fired 7 A-2 missiles on the first patrol all landed within fifty yards of the target 2,300 miles down range.

Finished up on USS Sam Houston SSBN 609 blue crew 1971 for two patrols STS 2 (SS)

Miss them ... but I'm just an old man now that can say I did that already.

Don't drink anymore, bad for your health, but if you'll buy me a Dr Pepper I'll tell you a sea story or two at the sub sim meeting in October.

Tried joining the Flying Airforce but they turned me down because my left leg is a few inches shorter than the right thanks to a surgery I did as a kid.

So I had no option but accepting my promotion to General from my Armchair.

I've seen the ocean. From an A-300 flying at 30,000ft :dead:

I'm also a self-professed pacifist, with qualifications. I would serve if there was a total war involving my country of residence, presuming it was not led against my country of birth. But under no other circumstance. I also deliberately refuse to work for military-related industry or intelligence, although my education could warrant this type of work.

One year concript service in the FDF plus mandatory refresher and volunteer training.
Sergeant in a jaeger brigade reconnaissance company, as a platoon FO and assistant squad leader. We were in the forest most of the time, humping tens of klicks wet and bitten by mosquitos looking for the "enemy", when found a juicy target i would direct the thunder upon them, love it.:p

I did my time as a conscript in the Federal German Army. The Bundesmarine didn't want me (too tall at 186cm/6'1" and some minor reasons), so I ended up as a gunner, Gepard AA tank.
Drafted in July 1989, I experienced the rapid reunification process as a soldier. Instead of volunteering for officer training as I originally had planned I just did my conscription time (12 months) and went to university afterwards. Was a good decision.

I'm diabetic:roll: , so when I turned 18, I thought; "What the heck, never hurts to try." The navy recruiter told me to get out of his office and stop wasting his time. No joke:dead:

I did do army ROTC as a PE class though in college. That was interesting. There were no shortage of armchair rambos in there.

ROTC's used to jog past my apartment at around 7am on weekend mornings. Right under my window.
The shouts and roars at early hours were my subconscious signal...."no class today, Tchock, back to sleep"

I used to see them and think, "wow, those guys are my age". This was countered by the black-bordered lists of other guys my age I saw every day.
That and the citizenship thing, I ain't never getting on a sub.

Back in my "yout", I spent several years in a Canadian militia regiment (infantry, anti-armor with Carl-Gustaf M3's). Didn't see much future in staying in the Canadian military though - budget cuts had basically ripped the guts out of all branches of service (and it doesn't seem any better now either, despite federal budget surpluses and all).

Didn't go to sea until I was in graduate school, but for 7 years I spent about 3-5 months a year out on one research cruise or another. And, I've seen the bottom of the Atlantic and the Pacific from inside DSV Alvin (from 1500m to a tad over 3500m deep).

Commercial shipping FTW.

What you need, where you need it, when you need it - Give or take a day.

Edit: I did check the Coast Guard, cause I worked for the Canadian Coast Guard while I was in college. I wouldn't call it serving, tho, it's not exactly an armed service.

I had the opportunity to be a diesel boat submariner '67 to 70. Aboard the USS Segundo SS-398. Went to torpedomen school in Key West, Fla. Sub school in New London Conn. was assigned to COMSUBPAC in San Diego. Spent 9 months on a WESTPAC in 1969. Spent 30 days submerged in Haipong Harbor, Cambodia monitoring shipping that was dropping off supplies bound for Vietnam. At night we would come to snorkel depth, recharge batteries, and get fresh air. Just before dawn we would sneak back inside the harbor and take pictures of ships and their contraband. Sometimes we were in as little as 50 feet of water. With the scope up meant we had 10 feet between the keel and harbor floor at times........A little tense at times, but would love to do it over again..............DBF

Armchair Admiral

I hope to go to the ADF (Australian Defence Force) this year on their Gap Year program (runs for 12 months). Waiting to hear back from 'em about my hearing :-? (yes I am deaf, hear with hearing aids) but no reply for a whole week. Before I decide to take part. Deciding on whether I should go to Navy (get to go on a Collins Class submarine!! and go aboard HMAS Cerberus... I think) or go to Air Force (get to see the F-111C up close too, would be awesome :p). Probably definitely Navy. Wouldn't miss a chance to go on a sub at all.

When I worked @intel, there are a lot of former bubbleheads there. When I showed one the 688i manual, he thumbed through it and said: "I can't talk about any of this.:|\\ " He had zero interest in subsims. I guess he had his fill in the navy. Subsim has such a great knowledge base, I was curious how much of it was/is actual experience. On the flip side, I had ROTC and several military history classes and it was fun to watch the armchair generals thump their chest's on what a great warrior they are!

Plus, I love hearing good military stories!

Havn't served before, and neither will I serve in the future :nope: I actually want to drive a Song class or Kilo. I love it so much

That's because I live in Hong Kong, and I am exempted from serving in the military by the laws.

But I wonder why there is no "Exempted" option for me to choose?

I served six years in the USN as a Tin-can Sonarman from 72-78 specializing on Mk 114 Underwater Battery Fire Control Systems. Served aboard USS Schofield(DEG-3):

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/6392/deg35ez.jpg

out of San Diego for most of the first 3 years then aboard USS Elmer Montgomery(FF-1082) out of Norfolk, Philly and Mayport:

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/9669/ff10826wq.jpg

In that time I found 7 confirmed Soviet Subs. Two Foxtrot Diesel boats like these:

Two November SSNs like these:

One Victor I SSN like this one:

One Echo II SSGN like this one:

And the jackpot. One Yankee SSBN like this one:
