Whatever suits yourself realy
There are no hard and fast rules and no real info on times in RL
Depends what needed doing on the boat in the way of repair and where you were in the queue
28 days is an average setting
If you set the days too short and have a short patrol you can end up being sent back to the same grid
Something to watch out for

I prefer random myself. I like not knowing how long I'll have before they ship me out again.

Random for me.
With the bonus being that if I'm not happy with the default min and max boundaries that SH3Cmdr uses, I can change them to suit me through editing SH3 options.cfg (f'instance, in 1939 and 1940 the min possible days is five, which did happen in RL, but doesn't suit me, so I changed it to 10).

True, but easily overcome by using SH3Cmdr's random patrol grid feature, which pulls another valid grid from the same block of grids.

JSCones has looked into the data on number of days in port and has randomized the days to reflect this. He has also looked into the number of days at sea and number of patrols after which a kaleun is retired from sea duty and his data on retirement reflect this.
In SH3CMDR 3.0 he makes it possible to have the same crew and boat, but with a new Kaleun, so you can continue through the war if you survive long enough.

Ooh, thanks irish, you reminded me...
In the Indian Ocean I set the days value to 55 static, because that was the average time there. Although, it could be greater depending on the availability of the docks, which as the war progressed became less and less for the U-boats (obviously the Japanese warships had first priority).
But as I'm too lazy to swap in a whole different set of boundaries for 1944 and 1945 when I play 10 Flot careers, I just go with 55.
