hey-

1: is there any way to send radar info to the tdc? like sonar? or a way to enter range manually without using the stadimeter, like in sh3? Right now I can pick the ships up on radar, but can't plot them because of not precise radar ranges and the inability to enter them into the tdc.

2: does high time compression make you miss contacts like in sh3? I've been cruising around in the bay just off Rabaul in good weather on the surface at 1024, not a single plane contact.

thanks

I'm new at SH4, but have spent a little time on it just lately.
About entering the range manually...yes you can do that...I measure the distance on the chart initially, then enter it manually.
To do this;
I bring up the Stad and get a quick measurement that is 'farther' than what I really want, by positioning the image lower than the mast height. Then the dial button on the range meter will be near the distance you want to set it at, and you can then manually click on the button and move it to where you want it.
But I've found the true digital readout on the gage to the left, will always be a little shorter than the gage you set the button to on the right, so I adjust.
When you get the readout on the meter on the left to read what you want, go to the attack map and see if the X in on the boat, if it's not, go back and move the button a little farther or closer till the X is on the boat, then check your AOB and shoot.
The trick is to do it fast.....:know:.

Don't know about the time compression causing misses. I try to 'avoid' stuff. This is not SHIII....I've found there are lots of targets, if you go to the right places.
I've been on 5 missions and met 3 convoys with BB's and CV's. Never been on one where I didn't run into at least two merchant convoys.

Good hunting  .

if i can't see the target, i can't lock it and use the stadimeter.

it's just annoying when visibility is at 1,000 yards and i know with radar that he's over there, 6,000 yards. and i can't enter this into the tdc.

what i liked about the german radar was that you could turn the dial, read the exact bearing, and the exact range.

no need to guestimate the bearing on the ppi and then guestimate the range on the other one, and try to crudely plot it out.

time compression:
It's not a lack of targets, it's just that it's hard to believe that i can be on the surface 20 miles off a major japanese base in good weather for two days and not see a single plane. Since the number of plane contacts drops off severely above 256 tc in sh3, i thought it might have something to do with this.

thanks anyway

Something (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=127076&highlight=range+dial) that makes manual range input much easier(and removes the need to do it with the stadimeter). It's this one: (I) Clickable TBT Range Dial. Note that even though you probably have to download the entire pack, you need to enable only that part in JTxE.

Alternatively you can follow the instructions in this thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=490867&postcount=1) and do the changes manually.

thanks. that helps alot.

does anyone know if higher tc makes you miss fast moving contacts?
