Hi everyone guys,
this is my first post here, so i take the chance to introduce my self a bit...my name is Marcello and im from Italy , 39 years old , a big fan of SHIII and SHIV , and sometimes i do also some static modelling about the subject .... ( ask me about my 1:72 Revell U-boat VII C ....eheheheh :D ) .
So, yesterday i played my very first mission with SHIV ( after a long break from SHIII ) , and i got a recog mission in which i had to take pics of some naval units in a Jap harbour ( ....i cant recall the exact name now....:-? ) . Woow guys it has been great..:!!!! Actually im playing at a 81 or 85 % of realism , normal difficoulty , im just keeping the outside view and the map contact update. As i told it has been really exciting , on my way to the object i had the chance to send to the bottom two merchants ( one with my deck gun and the other one using for the first time the manual targeting .... thanks to the guys who posted the correct way to do that on this great site...!!! ) , then the best part of the mission started....getting close to the harbour without being detected ( and destroyed ) by coastal guns or enemy ships / planes..., a very tactical "MOMENT" , everything went quite good except for a close encounter with a coast gun who left some scars on my hull..., i could not go deeper cause the max depth in that point was 32 or 39 ft..! :o ( if im not wrong.....anyway it was a real "pool" belive me...! )
So after this point a entered a more deep-water area , so i had the opportunity to sail at periscope depth for a while , avoiding the constant air patroling of planes . On my way to the object ( when i was sailing on surface for a while to recharge my exaust batteries ) i had another gun fight with an armed merchant , a nice fight very adrenalinic ( considering that the hull of my ship was already damaged ) but i had the last word ...!
So finally i get to the entrance of the harbour , spotted the docked ships , take the pics ( i didnt know how to do it but the in-game guide -F1- come in help ) and then run like hell to the opposite direction to go back home..! At this point i saved the game 'cause i had to go to work .....:-? , so i still have to pass the narrow point , where the coast gun is ..., but i have discovered priorly that if i dive at 29 ft they cant shoot at me ..., meaby the gun is not able to shoot at a low silhoutte....i dont know...!
So , what to say , at the moment im very enthousiastic about the game , its really nice and i cant wait to play again....:smug: . But i have a question too for the more experienced commanders.....there is a way to use my radar also when im at periscope depth...? I mean there is a way to raise an antenna or something like that ..?
So let me take the chance to say "THANKS" to everyone of you for the great help your posts gave me...i read a lot on this forum and everytime i discover something new and interesting..! Thanks again guys..!!!
So this is the end of this "endless" post...i really wrote too much but i was in the mood to share my noob experience with someone , and i think this is the right place. Thanks again...., and good hunt to everyone of you..!
Ciao.
P.S.
Please excuse my "Spaghetti-English" thats the best i can do now...... .

That sounded really stressful.:damn:

Now to answer your question, head to this thread [REL] Rising/Lowering SD antenna ... ?

I hope that helps!

It's great to see new bilge rats (SUBSIM nicknames for all newbies) come in and tell their stories. Stick around and swap some stories! Read some threads and pick up some local knowledge. SUBSIM has members from all over the world so "spaghetti english" is spoken and understood here.

I hope with some time spent here you can continue to enjoy what I think is the best submarine simulation in the world, with strategy tips, mods and general mayhem.

Hi guys,
thanks for your prompt answers, they really helps. For the radar antenna i've found a kind of "shortcut" , i simply keep the sub at 40 ft ( +/- ) , in this way my sd antenna will be outside the water allowing me to spot enemy aircraft.
Anyway, today i was very happy to continue my mission..., so i just loaded my last save and keep playing. Everything went quite cool, i just passed the narrow point in which the coast gun was and headed my way home...at this point i decided to save the game , so i just did it overwriting my latest save.
And here comes the big problem...., after a while when i tried to load my latest save , the game simply doesnt allow me yo do it..! It kick me out to Windows desktop...!!!!! :damn: . I tried other saves , and everything was fine. I think that probably for some reason i ignore, there is something corrupted in the saved file ... so all my efforts are simply gone...! .
So i started the mission again..!
Have something like this happened to some of you before ? Or im simply the most unlucky submariner in the world..? I hope this will never happen , its quite frustrating ...!

I have personally only had one bad save the entire time I've played but others have had it happen. I always make two or three saves and I save very often just incase. I know how frustrating having to start over is.
