View Full Version : Woohoo... I'm back!
After a good two and a half months of pain I finally got all the drivers and base applications working in my new fancy-shmancy Vista64 installation.
First game to try was SH3 of course; and to my surprise  it actually works! Maybe even runs a little better? ...but that might be more from the new zippy 10k Raid0 array. That load bar just cranks right along now.
I just couldn't bear the thought of reinfecting my system with starforce, so I went ahead and paid another $20 for the D2D version. Money well spent I think; turns out the latest D2D version comes pre-patched with 1.4 too.
:smug: Ahhhh... I've finally got my boat back, the 64-bit OS, a new Raid0 setup, I'm all backed up with a bunch of different drives. Life is good.
Welcome back Aaronblood.
Have a drink and report to BDU immediately for an assignment. We need good people to win this war.
Well... at least I was back til I tried to install GWX2...
SH3 is nothing but a black screen now :nope:

Click on my sig to visit the GWX website and follow the installation instructions.
Just one difference......Use the game disc to perform the uninstall operation.

Aye Vista is an animal all o its own
Different install procedures needed
Follow Jims advice and there are also a couple of Vista threads in the forums here too
Good luck
Thanks for the feedback guys...
Actually, my comment on this thread was just sorta of a side-comment.
I posted a more detailed explanation here:

In particular, I'm using the SH3 D2D version in order to:
1) avoid installing starforce on my new OS
2) avoid installing starforce
3) avoid installing starforce
4) avoid Vista starforce driver installation issues
Using the D2D version you avoid starforce and thus avoid all the headaches that go along with the SH3 disk not being recognized by starforce under Vista and so forth; which seems to be the source of most of the problems people are having trying to run SH3 under Vista on the threads I've skimmed thru.
The D2D version comes pre-patched to 1.4b and works just fine on Vista64 until I overlay GWX2. :hmm:
If you think it'll help I'll go look at the install instructions again (but I'm not using an SH3 disk). If it means reinfecting with starforce, I'll just live without GWX if I must.

This shouldn't prove problematic....the primary requirement is that you have a fresh/clean install.
FYI SH3 bargain basement discs now come without Starforce and pre-patched to 1.4b http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/thumbsup.gif

Sweet... if you have a link to something in Amazon lemme know. I'd probably buy another one just to keep around.
BTW: I figured out the black screen problem. It turns out it wasn't a GWX installation issue at all. Just that the latest nVidia driver (169.25) for Vista doesn't seem to play well with SH3 in regards to allowing any sort of AA.
I can play now, it's just all jaggie and ugly...
Maybe something to keep in mind for future reference:
Black Screen w/game sounds = turn off your GPU AA

Black Screen w/game sounds = turn off your GPU AABest forceware is 163.75 I use it and works great for SH3. No black spot glitches on the horizen when AA is enabled.
Glad you got the video driver issue resolved. When using the x64 version I take the same approach as when Win NT 4.0 came out and required a driver explicitly written for the OS, make sure that the driver says it works on vista x64 systems. Even when running XP x64 I ran into the same problems, though Vista is a bit more demanding when it comes to drivers (and hardware resouces).
Though it sucks having to spend $20 bucks twice, for the amount of hassle and frustration for those of us using Vista x64 the D2D is the quickest solution (even though you're buying the same game twice, since its a great game I don't mind too much). Just install from the dowloaded files, install GWX and you're in business.

Thansk, I'll check to see if that one works with Vista64
