Just want to say thanks to Ducimus for posting your thread on dealing with the AI. I love the GWX 2.0 mode (well I don't like the Klaxon sound, and I think the moon is a little too big. But these are my only grips), great gameplay. I finished my first career, and made it only to my second patrol and was KIA'ed on Dec 24th, 1939, for getting too greedy. I spent two weeks in foul weather, and had not found a single ship to sink on route to the western approaches. With fuel reserves low, I recieved a radio update of a close Convoy heading to England. When I finially intercepted, I had only 120m under my keel. I hit the convoy, sinking a large and small merchant, but was caught on the surface by a DD and a frigate (One of the interesting things about this convoy was it also contained a british submarine, with its crew manning its deck gun), Forced under, and sunk in good order with all hands lost.
I then read Ducimus' thread about the AI, and how it uses passive and active sonar. Good reading, and it saved my can this morning. I was three days into my secend career, Sept. 4, 1939. Hit bad weather off Norway on day two, and was still trying to grope my way through it with visibilty down to perhaps 500-800 m. I recieved a sound contact, and since I'm new to the sound package for the hydrophone (I was a RUB user) I did not recognize the contact as a warship. Basically I was on the same course north of the Orkney's in deep water. While warping at 64x, I bumped into the warship, a black swan, or another frigate. Came out of the fog and plastered me with heavy, fire. My crew is screaming that the boat is taking damage, and as I reached for the escape key, I stopped! Ordered a crash dive, and assembled a damage control team. I was taking on water, in the fore crew quarters, and Torp room, and had also lost both scopes. Anyway I decided to try an save her, and I did. I followed the advice, and just simply slipped away slowly at 100 rpm's. I also think the rough seas (winds 15) and 200m of water above helped. What a feeling, pumping the water out, repairing the damage inside, and saving my boat. One thing that lingers though is what did I run into in the fog, it had to be a battle group! I'm playing at 80% realism roughly, and have my external view enabled. Within 10 minutes of my crash dive, I had 1 frigate, and 5 DD's looking to sink my fragile boat. What a tense trip, just surviving this with members advice was an unforgettable experience. Great game, great mod. Cheers Ted.

Many brave kittens lost their lives to bring you that information!
Back when i was active in SH3, i lost a couple boats to similar cicurmstances. One off Curraoca, and the other off New york. I was puttering around in a pea soup fog and out of nowhere came the knife like bow from the fog like some really bad horror movie. The boat i lost off New York was particuarlly memorable since i only had 30-40 meters of water underneath the keel. My stern fell out from under me and was the first to hit bottom, followed quickly by the bow. Sat there on the bottom, flooded to the gills with water as he commenced his runs. All i could do was sit there and hope he was an idiot, but i knew i was screwed. I think he got a bullseye on his fifth run, and that was all she wrote.
Shoopzee,
Good report, but it would be a lot easier to read if you made your paragraphs shorter. :D

Brag,
I was finishing my work day, with little time to edit copy. Besides, I'm a press photographer, long winded, and hate writing structure. I leave that to the reporters, and copy editors, daft lot that they are. Consider it a bulk, free-formed conscious stream of thought. Again, sorry if I was too long winded for you, I actually prefer to tell stories with photos.
I'm going on vacation in a few days. Nice little trip to FLA.
Also, my dog ran away last week.
Something like that?:rotfl:

It wasn't about being long-winded; lord knows Brag is plenty good at that.:rotfl:
It was about breaking it up into smaller chunks, so it's easier to follow.
I'm not criticizing, just coming to the aid of my friend Brag.
Not that he needs help.
Well, actually he does, but I promised I wouldn't go into that in public.:p
Oh, and WELCOME ABOARD!:sunny:
If you stick around long enough, you might become my special friend, too (god help you)!:rotfl:

With the crew that Brag has he needs all the help he can get. His tubes are loaded with crew not torps.
It's a fine Skipper, der weiß, wo seine Mannschaft ist.

Hey Guys,
For the record I understand where Brag was coming from, and I salute him for actually taking the time to read the AAR, as stout and chunky as it was. The bottom line is that I was in a real rush, and just wanted to get my thoughts, and thanks to Ducimus on the record.
I like AAR's, and I like a game that provides a rich template for a fertile mind to really spin a yarn from their game experiences, and SHIII is that game, especially with GWX 2.0. If I had the time, I would have sat down, and actually drafted a good story, but as indicated above I was trying to thank Ducimus, and compliment the game, and the forum.
BTW, back to my original post, has anyone ever come across a cluster of that many warships? I know I was close to Scapa, but those 6 ships really made my hair stand on end.
Again, thanks guys, and let’s not let this get out of hand, Especially since I'm a Newb to this message board. I'm glad Brag actually took the time to read the post in the first place. Criticism should always be welcome visitor at your door. Enough said.:yep:

Sorry Factor,
Missed your post. Canon Eos-1D mkII, but I'm in line to be upgraded within the next 6 months (I hope) . I also have a 20D, but I really don't use it, only as a backup. The mkII is a great camera, solid enough to pound nails if needed. The only 'on the job' complaint about the mkII is being mindful of the weather all the time, which is a factor here on the east coast of Canada with our crappy snow/ rain winters. Our department lost 1 mkII and 2 5d's last winter due to wet weather. Shipped them off to Canon, and the cost to fix was greater than replacement. Nice huh, considering our paper gives them perhaps 30-40 K of business a year on average.
nice, i shoot motorsports for a living, i usie a Mark II, and a Mark II N right now, wanna upgrade to the Marrk III, but after the bugs are ironed out. im thinking of switching back to Nikon, because the D3 is awesome, no noise at all at 3200 iso! and i shoot alot at night. Ive had the Mark II for about 3 years, and it is a workhorse. only problem ive had w/ it is the pin that locks the lense in place snapped off last year, nothing CPS couldnt take care of.

Just looking at the site. Man that’s dedication, shooting that much motor sport. I'm currently admiring your Jim Beam girl photo. Hehe.
Looks like great access, are you on the road a lot? Auto sports is huge down there huh?
I'm based here in Halifax, a staffer at http://www.thechronicleherald.ca/ (http://www.thechronicleherald.ca/) . Great job, we are the largest daily east of Montreal. It's an interesting time in the business; we are looking to the future, but they are slow to evolve here, and very resistant to the internet side of things. They best come around soon, as the internet is the future of the business.
Do you have a press background, or an FA? My hats off to you for being able to shoot that much autosport, reminds me of hockey season up here. In reality though, every day is different in my photo world, sometimes boring, but then again, when you least expect it, something major happens. It always keeps you on your toes. Keep in touch. Cheers Ted.
im on the road alot, im usually home between monday afternoon till thursday morning. i go to about 34 outta 36 races a year. i love the job, get to see alot of the country. the travel does catch up to ya, more so after the summer. i have no press back ground, but i do have a degree in photojournalism, matter of fact, my job started as an intern about six years ago. i have this weekend off because there isnt a race.
