I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I noticed that the game makes a UPCInitial folder in the SavedGames folder when loading. That is one folder level up from where it should be, which is in a saved game folder. I've never noticed this behavior before, but maybe that's because normally it moves this folder to the correct saved games folder but never gets the chance to because the saved game loading bombs out before it can do that? (I've also noted there is a few *.tmp files there that look suspiciously like they could be temporary copies of other files in the saved games folder.)

Anyone have any suggestions? I've seen all sorts of suggestions about how to prevent it from happening, but only that one solution.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

So far I've tried dumping the temp files into the saved game folder but that didn't work.

That UPCIntitial Folder is created when you first start a campaign I believe, and it's supposed to be located at My Documents\SH4\data\cfg.

All the info involving saved games (such as your career progress, crew progress, and sub upgrades) are located in My Documents\SH4\data\cfg\SaveGames\00000001-00000002 and so on (The more saved games you have the higher 00000000 you will have). The names of the files located in that directory ar as follows: ActiveUserPlayerUnits.upc, CareerTrack.upc, GameplaySettings.cfg, ReplayInfo.rep, and UserPlayerSettings.upc.
I hope this helps.Rebel5555

Rebel5555:

Thanks for the reply. Some of this I knew from before, but I was really surprised that SH4 wrote temp files to the cfg folder. In fact, I was surprised to see it writing temp files, period!

I tried starting/loading a new game, then loading an old game right on top of it, but that didn't help, either.
